  • I think it's fair to say we all love the Boondocks, but is a reboot of the series really necessary? Are there no other ways to use animation/television to provide commentary on being Black?
    Just an animated opinion.

the first season is one of the most underrated seasons of any show.
the episode where riley got in trouble for spray painting was incredible, because it was the first time the show mentioned their parents, and without words it told you why they are living with their grandfather instead of their parents.
and the episode where the Ed took over an estate. it ended the episode with a positive message but again, without words it showed that in the end the rich white dude got his way without the ones effected by it even noticing.
it was a really well thought out show for that first season and even parts of the second and third.

If Boondocks ended after season 3, it would've been perfect. Season 4 was just like the Chappelle Show lost episodes: it was a network decision so it was doomed from the start.
To be quite honest, Boondocks trying to come back in this current climate would get them easily cancelled just due to the no holds barred spirit of the original comic strip/TV show.
So if wasn't gonna be done right, just don't do it at all.

A reboot that revolves around the different pov’s of characters that portray ideals & traits of “influencers” we see today & their mindset of why they go about using their platforms to promote repetition rather than original ideas. The darker side of media & its true intentions w/ feeding off the emotions of the audience. Huey finds himself confused as to why people are no longer logical & purely act off emotion to become the “next big thing” on the social scale. Could be an episode or build-up to something for the finale, just spit balling.

It's one of the reasons I love British sitcoms. They make 6 episodes in a season. Success? Another 6 episodes. Success? No more stories to tell? Ok. That's it. Do reruns.
While there are exceptions with shows that stayed around for longer seasons and longer runs, I do think that was a big part of their success. Every season being 6-10 episodes. No promise of continuation. So they poured everything they could into it.
Like... People always are shocked that Fawlty Towers was only 12 episodes in total. And an hour long special. Blackadder can similarly be binged in a night. Spaced, 12 episodes over 2 seasons as well (I think). Even the British The Office was over in a dozen or so episodes.
You can't jump the shark unless you exhaust the writers of good ideas. Or,at least, it's much harder to.

I don't think the reboot would work like we want it to, and it should be left alone. There was something special about Macgruder and his team that can't be replicated with a different writing staff. That's not to say it would totally suck, but it wouldn't quite feel the same. I think if Macgruder could get involved for a Boondocks movie, that would work better than trying to bring it back as a series. A lot of people have also mentioned that John Witherspoon's passing would be a great starting point for a new project, and I somewhat agree. A movie that starts with Grandad's funeral and captures the events afterwards could work.
If I had to think of a movie plot: Huey and Riley are 16-21 age range. Grandad passes and the movie starts with his funeral. Ed Wuncler's company is trying to take the house back because the boys can't afford to keep it up and they owe property taxes. They try to reach out to Ed Wuncler directly, but he's out of the country. The boys think up a plan that involves several characters we've seen over the series and they attempt a major heist. (Jasmine, A Pimp Named Slickback, Cristal, Sweetest Taboo, Lando, Stinkmeaner Clone, Usher etc.) The plan fails miserably with hilarious hijinks. Ed Wuncler comes back to Woodcrest as they're trying to actually seize the house and gives them the house due to his relationship with Grandad and payes the taxes. Credits roll.

People should just make a different show. Why reboot an old show? Just because people want to see more of the same characters and style? What's the point? Why not make a fresh new show inspired by the boondocks? As a culture we need to let the past be the past and move on. We don't need a modern huey, grandad, and riley. Tbh alot of it still stands up today and doesn't need modernization to be impactful. Anything that would need to truly be modernized so heavily that it wasn't applicable to the og boondocks would just better work in something new and fresh rather than tryna drag the old into the new for another controversial, divisive reboot that exist because the boondocks is already a recognized property rather than making something more efficient at being of the now as a new series would do.

Honestly, it just depends on the creative mind on the person behind theoretical new season, Ofc it wouldn't make sense to rehash old ideas, or do what the 4th season did and add nothing substantial at all to the wider story of the boondocks, but think about the possibilities when given the chance to develop on these characters, For example, the 5th season could start somewhere in the future, where huey and riley are teenagers, huey is 18, riley is 16, and Robert has passed away (bc john witherspoon) It could start with them dealing with their grief in different ways due to their different personalities, and it could lead to a conflict between each other, but at the end of the day, they would ultimately put it aside and do their best to move on as brothers. My personal Idea of what would be a good continuation of the boondocks would be another development on huey's character, Perhaps he's become apathetic towards the black community, or what he was fighting for in season 1, and the story continues from his perspective, now that he is more grown up and has more exposure, And perhaps riley has become more mature, he still has a big mouth and an attitude, but its a lot less childish. He's become a rapper/artist, however, he is not like ganstalicious or thugnificent, he's more laid back, less flashy and more humble, because he as a child has seen what happens if he were to go down the path of his idols. And maybe jasmine becomes part of the trio, and she would represent what she always had, but more developed, someone loosely attached/connected to black culture, and only really understands the tropes and stereotypes, like many youth today who are loosely connected to a lot of the culture that the boondocks was parodying. I would say that the main thing should be to focus on huey and his development, how he see's the world as an 18 year old, and if he decides to go back to fighting for freedom, or remains as he is, and perhaps meets someone who reminds him of how he was before in terms of fighting for the future of the black community, but is more optimistic, someone perhaps like Michael from the comics, and they could be a cool duo, huey, more pessimistic and more of a realist, and Michael, the optimist, and someone who makes light of the situation, but what they both have in common is what they are fighting for. And i think that would be a cool synopsis for a theoretical boondocks new season. 4 main characters, Huey, Riley, Michael and Jasmine with some other supporting characters that represent more aspects of the modern black community. The show could tackle a lot of modern issues like, perhaps the wars and how people take sides in the media because its popular without realizing the full context, or how everybody wants to be an influencer through social media, or hustle culture, celebrities, left vs right, there is still a lot of issues that the show could address, And I think these themes combined with the more mature teenage cast would make for an interesting 5th season :) Its not about what's already been done, its about what they could do/develop on in the narrative.

Your right, a reboot is not what we needed.
But more of sequel to the original would be far better. Showcasing everyone grown up and how they experiencing everything in a new modern age era with the likes of social media and other media outlets influence the black community.
A story that I've jotted down by haven't worked on for a while was focusing on Huey and Riley as they're 18 heading into the full blown adult world, but without the guidance of their grandfather as he passed sometime before they became legal adults. Without him around, Huey still strives to keep fighting the never ending battle of ignorance in the black community. While Riley centers around on feeling that gangbanging is all that he is, and all that can be. But throughout the story, alot of these things they either try to fight against or make them who they are changes because of facing the reality of those situations.
For Huey, no matter how hard he tries, ignorance would finding its way around the black community, and not just them, but other races too. He wants to be something, be someone that speaks the bold truth for everyone to wake up and do something with their lives instead of chasing to be the next big thing. But every attempt often has people not care about his intentions, or has him look down on. It comes to the point where Huey would become more like his grandpa, focus on living his own life and caring about those around him then focus all his energy into helping a community that can't be bother to help themselves into a perpetual cycle they keep getting apart of. Riley actually get's deep into the gangster life, becoming more like thugnificent in everyway possible, but also in the wrong way possible. This was something both Huey and his grandad try to keep him away from that lifestyle, but upon their granddad's death this would push Riley down that path even more. But once shit really hits the fan's, that's when it hit Riley how precious his life is, and that there's more to being a gangster such as being a more creative young adult black kid who loves art. Not only that, the role's between the two brothers somewhat changes; Riley would want to learn how to be a better person, a thoughtful idea of how to help people like himself not do something stupid. Essentially, Riley would be what Huey strives as he uses his mind and knowledge to help where he can. Huey leaves behind the idea of stopping the bigger problem in the black community, becoming something of his grandfather of finding it hard to appeal to well like minded mines. Yet, he has his brother, and his some few friends at the end of the day, and the two looks out for one another in a world that whiles changes, is in a perpetual cycle of making mistakes even when it wants to learn how to be better.
You have a few returning characters like Jasmine in her family, uncle rukus and such and forth. All of them would go through their own arcs that correlates to the main theme of the story; that being change. Some people would change for the better, or change for the worst, some people would use their past to become better people, or others will let their past consume who they are now.
I always felt like this was the best way to make a new boondock and still have the tone and witty writing along with telling important themes through each epsiodes. I may try to get back into writing this story one day, but I have other stories I'm writing right now. Great video btw!

"Respectability Politics" glosses over a lot of black problems, but it's still a positive representation of black people. Sometimes it's better to represent the ideal than represent what's actually going on in the rough parts of town. Do you want a show about 13 year old carjackers? That's some real hood sht. That's a serious issue in my area. Kids are getting sucked into gangs and drugs and communities are absolutely getting destroyed... but we can't talk about that or show it because it's ugly and it's not flattering.

As a white hispanic family, the boondocks (the show and the comics) honestly opened me up to so much of a world I was unfamiliar with. Yes it’s media and you could say it’s not real, but it’s messages and themes I think are so important for all people to watch and understand. (Even tho it is getting outdated in some messages). We don't need a reboot, but a continuation could be done as it would definitely have a lot of material to work with by looking at the current state of Idiocracy that blkppl have fallen deeper into! The first three seasons were masterpieces (4 was trash for obvious reasons) and they were very relevant to where we're at.
The first episode should be titled: SEE, WE TRIED TO WARN YOU!!!!! I would even mention that since we lost John Witherspoon and Charlie Murphy, they may as well move forward in time with Huey and Riley being older - like in their early 20s. FINALLY - this should not be greenlit without Aaron McGruder at the steering wheel!

The Boondocks is a show that aged like fine wine because of it's style *and* substance. Almost everything from Huey's infamous garden party speech to the way Riley handled the topic of gay rights was nothing short of witty. However, the very last episode was definitely a bit of a slog to get through for me not because it lacked substance necessarily, but because there was never a single moment in the episode that didn't feel a bit too "on the nose". Did we really need the last half of the series finale to be Riley spewing ableist insults every few seconds when he wasn't even *doing* that for three seasons straight? It just felt like the remaining show writers were trying to turn him into the black version of Cartman at that point. If we do get a reboot, I would like to see Jazmine get more screentime cuz her character was *severely* underutilized by the time the last season rolled around. Poor girl was almost nothing without Huey or her dad Tom 😭 She was even set up to become Huey's potential love interest in the pilot, but that doesn't really matter now.

I feel like Boondocks lost the plot even before the 4th season, somewhere around season 2. Season 3 is still really fucking funny though.

Tbh I'd love a Boondocks episode on the LGBT Community. No not just about the existence but about how big of a role black people played in the revolutions and stonewall and that it was Black Trans Women that stood there with them, as well as a Black Gay man named Bayard Rustin whom was MLK's best friend and helped put together the March on Washington where 'I Have A Dream" happened as well as other Civil Rights causes that we still feel to this day. Talking about who Marsha P. Johnson is, as well as Clifton Henderson whom was alongside Nina Simone.
Have you heard of any of these people with any significance? No, you haven't. But you'll hear about every important person in the LGBTQ community en masse...except the Black ones, outside of Rupaul and Laverne Cox, but you're barely hear about any of the other black ones, or the ones that fought for Civil Rights all those years ago. You'll rarely hear them acknowledged, or talked about, and the show could touch on why that is, or the hypocrisy of it or WHY it's become a thing. The media and many black people in the media, especially when it comes to rapping, etc love to run with the idea of an anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, even believing that black people have nothing to do with it. They only wish to acknowledge it when it is seen in some kind of predatory way, ie: replacing "No Homo" with "No Diddy." there's a commentary that could be made about that and it's because Black History and especially Black History Month, only talks about the same 5 people over and over again. They don't tell you about Marsha P Johnson or Bayard Rustin, but they'll sure as heck tell you about Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, and George Washington Carver and all the things he could do with a peanut and Harriet Tubman and how Jessie Owens and his Olympic run. These are all great things, but talking about the same 5 black people during Black History Month is the wrong way to go about it. Huey could try to start a crusade to get Black History actually taught in history classes as the default and getting pushback because they "got a month" where the same 5 black people get talked about 30-40 years later, till the end of time.
It's harmful to our community as a whole, and especially the LGBTQ community which wouldn't be where they currently are without the contribution of the black people within it throughout History, but the majority of black people are uninformed about this or don't know at all, and many of them don't fight for the causes against the same prejudice people that will come for THEM next, and trying to keep them uneducated about it is WHY its that way. There's a lot of commentary you could do with that. Do ya'll know or learn about Gladys Bentley, or Storme DeLarverie , or James Baldwin, Alvin Ailey, Lorraine Hansberry, Ernestine Eckstein, Audre Lorde, Barbara Jordan, Miss Major, Phill Wilson or Willi Ninja who created Vogueing for runway models? Next Black History Month are they gonna tell you about Ron Oden and the City Council? Or Andrea Jenkins or Lori Lightfoot? LGBTQ History IS Black History, but you wouldn't know it with what they allow and don't allow to be talked about and focused on en masse...
Heck I bet the majority of ya'll never heard of Jerry Lawson, who invented the Pause Button in video games..
Heck you could even do stories about how all the "Black Voices" in the community that have podcasts or social media and use that social media to tear down black movies that the grifters dislike (Such as they'll tear down Halle Bailey in the Little Mermaid) and will constantly scream about "Tell our own stories..." but they'll be the first to jump on with the "pick me's" and complain about Yasuke getting a story in Assassin's Creed as a main character. And they'll use their platform to put down the very things they ask for while not spending a single moment talking about or boosting the movies, films or TV shows like Chavalier, Iwájú, Kizazi Moto or Iyanu. But rather than boost the Black Stories they claim they want told, they'd rather spend their time feeding the algorithm and bashing Halle Bailey as Ariel, or make ten videos about "Black Cleopatra" or complaining about Yasuke's being a main character in a video game. And all the hypocrisy there.
I don't even gotta stop there, you could do a whole episode on the "Blacks for Trump" people.
I'm just getting started, but those are the kinds of things that could be called out in a Boondocks series now and should be, because it's been continuously happening. As Gil-Scott Heron said in B-Movie all those years ago "As Wall Street goes, so goes the nation, and here's a look at the closing numbers: racism's up, human rights are down, peace is shaky, war items are hot, The House claims all ties, Jobs are down, money is scarce, and common sense is at an all-time low on heavy trading."
Yeah, these are the kinds of things I think the Boondocks could address nowadays, especially if some of the bigger black platforms that got over by being 'pick me's' to the grifters don't want to use their platforms to talk about it or for the actual good of the culture or any knowledge pertaining therein.

For one thing - Jerry Lawson didn't just create the pause button, he created the video game cartridge - Atari, Nintendo, SEGA and others need to pay him his due respect.
Wasn't Gangstalicious a part of the lgbtwxyz community you're referring to? There were several episodes where he was the focus....

    • @carrastealth
      @carrastealth 3 месяца назад

@@mrdreloaded4049 Gangstalicious being gay served a different story and message purpose than what I was saying to use educating people about black people's contributions to the LGBT community and acknowledging it. Gangstalicious was more about rappers being in the closet but putting it in their music and people not noticing :3 And we have an openly gay rapper now in Lil Nas X as well (who'd make a great guest voice now that I think about it) :)
Also yes, Jerry Lawson also created the video game cartridge! He definitely deserves more recognition all around!
