- Should you release your song and video at the same time?
It’s definitely a dilemma. I’ve switched my opinion on this more than once. But as I put more thought into the subject, I realized the best answer is - “Where and how your video is released, is more important than whether it comes out on the same day as the song”.
I’ve laid out 4 different options for video release strategy, and I give you my top choice. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Great strategy! I like option 2
As an underground musician trying to build an audience.
I believe to make the most of everything to have content, content and content.
Take advantage of every opportunity.
No boosts but building longterm and stable.
Personally i always release audio and video separately to make my campaign longer.
Often with the video two weeks after the digital streaming release. No launch partner as i want to build my own channel stable for a good success in the long run.
I see the audio and video as two separate contents and want to make most entertainment possible to the audience following me.
Definitely it has drawbacks sometimes in case of reach (as you mention) but i never lack of content on my socials and the reach has been quite good anyway for the music videos!
Great channel i love marketing and you will see me more in the comments =)
Have a great day!
Great comments 🙌.
I like the element of steady content, which is not always easy to do for self releasing artists.
Looking forward to more from you!
Interesting. I was wondering about perhaps two weeks between audio and video, having not done this before and not seen any advice yet until today with this video above. Cool!
Thanks!
Todd crushes it every time man, every one of these short videos has what you're looking for packed right in with no fluff.
Thanks for that 🙏.
Thanks heaps for sharing your knowledge with us Todd!
No worries Alistair, Thanks for tuning in 🙏
Great advice. Thanks Todd!
Any time!
REALLY loving your videos Todd!! We feel like second guessing ourselves over decision making is probably the worst part of being new to this industry. We've always released music and the video on the same day, but definitely re-thinking that now. You also mentioned at the end another video coming soon about 'should I use YT promotion channels'. ANOTHER area we're confused over! So yeah you're really hitting on the topics we're most concerned about! Looking forward to that next video!!
Glad to hear that! Great feedback. I'll be taking cues from this comment section when deciding which topics to cover. So feel free to suggest any ideas 🙌
@@BandBuilderAcademy A video specifically on YT ads and setting them up would be great. There's a lot out there already, but not specifically about promoting music.
Solid advice right when I need it 🙈🙈
Glad to help Rufus!
Thanks Man💯
No problem 🙌
this was great dude! Opt 2 is looking like the move for next release
Thanks Alex! Can't wait to check out your new videos!
Nothings working yet lol. I'm set to release an album for my band on April 20th. We have released 2 audio singles a month apart and have a plan to release a video in about 3 weeks. This page is the 1st bit of real info I've seen to finally apply something in the hopes of getting people interested. It extremely difficult as the entire band not only has full time jobs but have many hats in the band already. I am the one editing the video and it's been difficult to to that let alone balance everything else as we also are gearing up for shows. Literally no real help or support in terms of the many jobs it takes to achieve any level of success. The music is there. The way easy compared to basically trying to be your own record label, agent, accountant, film director, engineer and good lord the list goes on. I'm hoping what little we have in budget for promotion will be worth it. But we could use a lot more help
Sounds like you need to join Band Builder Academy. You get a free coaching call with it, and I'll jump on the phone and teach you how to reduce your overwhelm and give you a workflow that has you do "only" the things that will move the needle, and put aside the rest. - Todd
Awesome thank you, you're amazing
Appreciate that! Working on some new videos to release shortly. stay tuned. Todd
Thank you!
No problem 🙌
thanks alot man!
No problem!
Thanks for the helpful video!
You're welcome Caleb. Glad you found me.
@@BandBuilderAcademy I know Friday release is good for charts, but if I am a small artist and I am not aiming for charts, do you recommend a Wednesday release? Will it still show up on Release Radar that Friday?
@@CalebBeachyMusicChannel I don't know the answer to the Release Radar question. Nothing is mentioned about that scenario (that I can find). Spotify say if you pitch your song in Spotify For Artists "Upcoming" portal at least 1 week before the release date you should get Release Radar. If you choose a non-Friday release (and do the pitch more than 1 week in advance) please let us know if you see any Release Radar. Also the other reason to choose Friday release dates is that most of the editorial playlists are programmed to change on Fridays. So you may eliminate some chances to get added to editorial playlists simply because your song is not out on the day they update the lists.
@@BandBuilderAcademy Thanks! I think I am going to try the Wednesday release for my next single! I will let you know!

I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your video not only because it was very accurate and informative but that I could immediately tell that you have some significant label experience as you had noted with your leadership at Fearless and head of sales and marketing at Sony prior to that. I worked in A&R through the late eighties and up to 1995 when I started my label under Blackheart Records/Universal - Beloved Entertainment Group. Prior to that, I worked at Imago, TVT, and Continuum. Prior to starting Beloved, I was under contract with Sony Classical (prior to BMG merger), working on cross-promotional marketing with some of their new crossover artists, namely Michael Bolton and Karl Jenkins. We might have friends in common.
Anyway, just wanted to give you props and say hello. I subscribed to your channel and will be interested in watching some of your other videos. Don't you just miss the old days of the business? I do.
Thanks for saying hello, and for the kind words.🙌 I'll be doing more videos, so thanks for subscribing and staying tuned in. Band Builder Academy is where most of my content goes, but I definitely love meeting so many new people here on RUclips. cheers! Todd
@@BandBuilderAcademy I will definitely visit your website. I run an ad agency these days and have been in adverting and marketing for a little longer than I was in the record biz. It seems like many of us label peeps ended up in marketing. Great to meet you as well.
Just watched your video. Is it possible to run RUclips ads of your video that runs to Spotify ?
Not with this specific RUclips TrueView skippable ad. They only allow you to link back to your channel, video, or your official website. There are other types of Google and RUclips ads that allow outside links, but I find TrueView to be most effective and by far the best price.
I would honestly love you to help, I’m with a label but need help !
Love to hear that Damon. Hit me up! 🙌 Todd
@@BandBuilderAcademy Thank you Todd , I will send you an email. Thankyou.
Is March a good time to release a new song/band?
Yes. And for others wondering about this "timing"...when you are launching a brand new music project, I wouldn't say there is a best time. Maybe just avoid a busy holiday week.
Should I release my video on RUclips on Instagram
This depends. If you are making significant income from the RUclips Partner Program and care about monetizing, then I would drive fans from social media to RUclips to watch your music videos. But if you are still working on building a fanbase, I recommend you put the full music video on RUclips + Instagram Reels + TikTok. When a fan is just discovering you for the first (or second) time, it's important to keep their attention and not drive them somewhere else right away. Time on profile (retention) is an important aspect to social media algorithms and music videos can be a good way to help keep people engaged longer.
