I enjoy your perspective Justin. I’ve been learning this strategy and I’m happy with the results. It just makes sense today. The path of an independent musician requires many skills and taking each song (rather than an album) to release provides more practice for the full process. Plus you get feedback and learning on each song. Eventually, after I have more experience, I plan to make a traditional album as well because I think it’s a different experience but I’m enjoying the single strategy as I develop. Sort of like having weekly homework’s in a class before and leading up to the final project.

We (OCEAN HIGHWAY) have taken this approach the last year. We just released song #13. Next month on June 10th we have an entire Instrumental Album coming out. And we have another 5 songs in the bank for the next months coming after June 10th.
    Great video! Thank you

This video came right on time. I am working on a 12-track edm project for which I am planning a release strategy. Will release a single every month and see how it goes. Any suggestions are welcome!

    Alright, Justin?
I agree that you're shooting yourself in the foot, working on albums as an up-and-coming band. People just don't view music the same as they did when we were younger and single songs, released frequently are more suited to the modern, injured attention span. I actually feel sorry for the young team, that they'll never know the excitement of sitting up all night waiting on the record shop to open to go and grab themselves one of the first copies of a new release from one of their favourite bands. I tried fighting the modern way of doing things for years but Convenience is God now and, as the old saying goes "if you can't beat 'em: join 'em" 🤣
I have been finding that content creation on social media is a bit over-rated as well. We work hard on a piece of content and it usually gets ignored. We take a shit video on a phone of me (the drummer) playing an acoustic guitar with our singer doing her thing and everybody loves it 😂
I find most of our audience have come from playing live. It's always after a gig that we see the social media numbers climb (slowly but surely).
Our last release (Music Ain't Dead by the Stiff Lips, to insert a bold plug, should any Punk/ Rock 'n' Roll fans care to hear it) was recorded by me, at home, mastered professionally and uploaded to Spotify. Our plan next was to do a four song EP, release half of it on Spotify and sell the full thing in a nice vinyl package with a few 'exclusive' ones made up with a bunch of one-time-only bonus goodies for our proper fans (all three of them 😂).
We're doing pre production for the next five songs just now but it's taking its time as there's some long-term bad habits needing smashed out of existence and we're not going near a studio till it's ready because the more editing you leave for your engineer, the more you drain his/her will to live and the less enthusiasm they're left with for the mixing side of things 😂
Anyway: I'm writing 'the Lord of the Rings Trilogy' in your comments section so I'll chuck it at that.
Cheers for another great video 🍺

I do appreciate and understand the logic this strategy is based on, and it’s not the first time I came across this, of course. My personal issue with it is that, creatively, I am moving more and more towards actual concept albums (yes, antiquated, I know 😅). The album I am about to finish producing just now even has half of the tracks transitioning into each other, which makes for a crucial part of the musical storyline of the whole piece. So I’ve been wrecking my brain how to best approach the release for this one. I might be able to release two tracks as singles before the entire album, and put effort into releasing tons of microcontent to the socials on a heavily regular basis to get the touches to potential new audience. Let’s see how this goes 🙂

Well put, Justin. One song at a time every couple of months makes a lot sense. People’s attention spans got zapped years ago. 🎸👍

I've been recommending this same approach to artists (a song at a time, then an album re-release), but I was only considering the point you make about staying visible and current. Thanks for your thoughtful advice. The main downside to the release-per-month approach is the need for artwork for each one.

Mannnn for the past 2 months I’ve been telling people close to me that I’d release an EP soon
Now after watching this video, I’m realizing that I want to reframe my strategy for releasing so it feels like I’m “letting people down”
But it’s a growing pain that’ll be better for myself down the road ^_^

Thank you so much Justin. I've been on the fence about releasing my album because I want to start releasing music as singles rather than wait for a few months down the road. I was worried because I feel like I will get better at mixing but you are right; why wait when I can start reaching fans right now. Thank you!

I made this decision a year ago! Now, I'm waiting for my new Apple Silicon Mac Pro. It's going to be my Christmas present to myself this year. Then I can finally get back to work for 2023 releases all year. Atmos music videos!

Great video! I have been considering releasing singles as an open door. I'll get to the album when the time is right. I believe with an album there has to be a period of time you are trying to capture. Fast forward to today its music in music out. It's a different challenge as an artist and I welcome it. Every month sounds very reasonable also removes the bullshit and gets you to work. Love the concept.
