My respect and love for Dalton’s portrayal as James Bond has only grown over the years. He was trying so hard to break Bond free from “the formula” and yet was unfortunately impossibly chained to it. It also didn’t help that he was following Roger Moore who, in the 7 films he had done, had ingrained his lighter, more funny, more relaxed Bond into the psyche of the film going public. What I absolutely love about Dalton’s Bond is that he had all these subtleties to his performance. He wasn’t trying to play Bond as a one liner superhero stereotype. He was a man. An imperfect man who at times, let his emotions show through when things got the better of him. For the first time in a LONG time, you FELT what it was like to be Bond and much of the time, it was NOT pleasant. Dalton made Bond once again a man you could genuinely believe was who he said he was. As far as I’m concerned, Dalton walked so Craig could run.
Dalton could be dark in The Living Daylights as was more serious and brought back the edge that was missing in the Moore films including the scene when his friend Saunders was killed and even fellow M16 agents at the beginning of film could see the anger in his eyes and tone of voice. When he knocked out Puskins guard and hit Pushkin when tried to warn his guard and saying “That was damned stupid could tell Bond wasn’t messing around and could be more like Connery and the Daniel Craig of his time.
He was reportedly under consideration for Batman V Superman. While I think he would have been good in the role I'm grateful that we got to see him as The Chief in Doom Patrol instead.

Roger Moore was an excellent Bond and all his movies are endlessly rewatchable ...They tried something different with TD more violence and more gritty ..and he did deserve a third film..
So Timothy Dalton is one of the few Hollywood actors I've met in person... (I live in the midwest)... My father is a well known antique dealer, and has sold many items to him over the years... Dalton has a love for antiques and history as well, and that's probably why he's in so many period pieces... it was the mid 90s and I was probably 10 or 11 and was at an antique show with my dad and after he went by, he told me who it was and he was a james bond... I remember telling my friends who were too young to know that there was another bond besides Roger Moore or Sean Connery... I myself was puzzled until years later when I saw the movies

Now that Craig is done, I'm so excited (and a bit nervous) for what and who is next. Anyone considered I hope and believe will be great.
Daltz! Loved him. Damn shame he didn't get more Bond films. And both The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill made a lot of money worldwide especially Daylights which outgrossed many of Roger's movies. Unfortunately Licence to Kill got lost in the 1989 summer crush in the US but it did well elsewhere still making money for MGM/UA. He would have got a third film if not for the MGM legal issues which halted Bond films for the next six years.
I don't know how anyone can take a Bond Film seriously and say Dalton was a gritty Bond, his car could shoot a laser and he escaped on a Cello case in his first film. In his second film, he managed to put a truck on two wheels. Please grow up people.
You forgot the movie he did with Brooke Shields called "Brenda Starr, Reporter" (1986)-he went straight to filming "The Living Daylights" (1987). The Starr movie didn't come out until 1992 due to a lot of issues with the producers, studios, film rights, etc. Sad because it would've benefited coming out when Batman, Dick Tracy, and the other comic book character movies were relevant.
Michael Keaton only did two batman movies and they were also very dark and he is considered the best batman so why can't Dalton be the best Bond its how good the movies are not how many
Timothy Dalton without a doubt is one helluvan actor. Easily of the best to portray Bond (Sorry. Connery #1 for me.). Was awesome in Hot Fuzz... Aw hell! He been awesome in most of what I've seen him in!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Been ages since I watched any JoBlo vids, and it's so refreshing and awesome as always, not like the boring drone of a vid I watched earlier from another channel about movies. Regarding this video itself, you Tarantinoed the crap out of it? How many jumps from pre-Bond to post-Bond were there? Let's count... let's not. Hmm which one am I going to watch next and write a stupid comment on?
7:21: I always imagined Timothy Dalton as Tony Stark in a hypothetical 1980s live-action Iron Man movie. I think that comic book artists like Alex Ross actually used Timothy Dalton's likeness as a template for Tony Stark.
You take that back! Minus some low budget CGI (& Leelee Sobieski in gold body paint), that Hercules mini-series was not bad at all- it had Mr Dalton *&* Paul Telfer...
@@SR-iy4gg Same; & the characterisation was pretty good for the expected calibre of story- it was *much* better than the two big-budget Hercules movies that were made back in the 2010's...
I've been enjoying and analyzing the James Bond saga for over 40 years, in fact, I graduated with a thesis on From Russia with Love, and I'm fascinated by Timothy Dalton's characterization as 007, with that Hamlet-like dilemma regarding his license to kill. By the way, I also enjoy his other acting work, from Prince Barin in Flash Gordon to Sir Malcolm Murray in Penny Dreadful, an unjustly underrated cult series.
Ironically For Your Eyes Only was one of Roger Moore's more serious Bond films. It would have fitted Dalton perfectly. He could have carried Bond for the entire 80s like Connery did in the 60s, Moore in the 70s, Brosnan in the 90s and Craig in the 2000s
Slightly incorrect to say Brosnan was approached first, he wasn’t Timothy was. At the time he was filming Brenda Starr and when approached he said they would have to delay the start so he could finish his current project. At this point the powers that be decided to approach Brosnan so they wouldn’t have to delay shooting & then the Remington Steele extension threw a spanner in the works with Cubby declaring “Remington Steele will not be James Bond”. By this time there had been enough of a delay that Timothy had was pretty much done Brenda Starr so they approached him again & he accepted. He went straight from wrapping Brenda Starr to filming the Living Daylights. I’m not sure where the whole Brosnan was the original choice came from but it isn’t accurate. The greatest shame of the franchise was not getting the 1991 film that was promoted at Cannes 1990 & the 1993 film. By the time GoldenEye was being written with him in mind he was out of contract but did want to do it until Cubby stated he wanted him to do at least five & Timothy decided to resign from the part officially. I can’t help but wonder if he was offered the same movie by movie deal Roger got in the 80s if we would have seen a couple more from him. One thing is for sure, if you watch the BAFTA show on Bond from 2003 that is on here you will see him being interviewed & it cuts to Brosnan whose final movie Die Another Day had been released a couple of times. Despite being older than Brosnan, Timothy actually looks younger which demonstrates he could have played Bond until 2003 like Cubby wanted. It’s a shame we only got the two & will always feel GoldenEye would have been so much better with Dalton as Bond. Some of reasons LTK didn’t make the money it should have are the fact they changed the name from Licence Revoked after they spent the promotional budget so it didn’t get the promo push it needed. It was also released to battle along side the likes of Batman, Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, Lethal Weapon 2, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Ghostbusters 2 & even Dead Poets Society. Domestically it was also given a 15 rating when all Bond films before that were rated PG which ,east kids weren’t allowed to see it. Why they chose to release it in the summer in the US when the market was saturated with blockbusters is beyond me. Daniel Craig isn’t James Bond, he is Bond in name only. They’ve taken away far too many character traits, Bond films are now just generic secret agent movies.
Young Timothy would have been a perfect Superman. He would have brought darkness, down to earth charm and most importantly believable story telling to the screen.
Dalton was better than Craig as Bond. But he lacked that humouristic flare and charisma that Connery and Moore had. He also had a weird haircut and clothes as Bond. It could have been much better.
In my opinion, Timothy Dalton was the best James Bond.

I'm jealous of people that lost their cool. At least they have the dignity of once being cool. I can't honestly say that. Great video. Thanks.
He also played Rasilon in Doctor Who
I really like him as Bond, he really suits the part.
I wish he did more Bond movies.
Hihgly recommend an old Charlie's Angels episode where he plays a cat burglar as a curio.
The best Bond IMHO
Michael Keaton only did two batman movies and they were also very dark and he is considered the best batman so why can't Dalton be the best Bond its how good the movies are not how many
Timothy Dalton without a doubt is one helluvan actor. Easily of the best to portray Bond (Sorry. Connery #1 for me.). Was awesome in Hot Fuzz... Aw hell! He been awesome in most of what I've seen him in!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Loved Timothy in Doom Patrol. Cast Mr. Dalton as Killian in Edgar Wright’s, Running Man!
A great actor for a great Bond. Shame he couldn't have do another third film. That would have been fantastic.
Let's count... let's not. Hmm which one am I going to watch next and write a stupid comment on?
him as Sir Malcom in penny dreadul was the Best!
i guess if you actually read the books, it would make more sense. Bond was not "campy"...he was deadly.
7:21: I always imagined Timothy Dalton as Tony Stark in a hypothetical 1980s live-action Iron Man movie. I think that comic book artists like Alex Ross actually used Timothy Dalton's likeness as a template for Tony Stark.
Timothy Dalton was James Bond when I was a kid so he’s always been one of my favorite Bond actors. License to Kill is also my favorite Bond theme.
Amazing bond actor who came into the scene at the wrong time… he was younger, he would of been an amazing fit in goldeneye and casino royale
You take that back! Minus some low budget CGI (& Leelee Sobieski in gold body paint), that Hercules mini-series was not bad at all- it had Mr Dalton *&* Paul Telfer...
Yeah. I watched that about a week ago and enjoyed it except for Timothy's character getting killed off.

Same; & the characterisation was pretty good for the expected calibre of story- it was *much* better than the two big-budget Hercules movies that were made back in the 2010's...
Love Timothy Dalton's costume dramas! But as a '90s kid, my favorite of his films is THE ROCKETEER.
He was really funny in Hot Fuzz in a very dark way, especially the scene with that mini church was so gross but hilarious
He was my favorite Bond just wish he got to do more. Penny Dreadfull i also thought he was great but think i enjoyed him most in Hot Fuzz.
He looked better than ever in the rocketeer,,
He is so great. Always a delight to see him. He is so good in hot fuzz. Steals every scene he is in
Licence To Kill is still my favorite Bond movie.
Who says no-one ranks Dalton as the best Bond? 🤨🤔😉
Considering he wasn't a huge actor before Bond, it's crazy to imagine him passing on millions at least twice
Terrific actor.
Where’s the cigarette?
Such a great actor, l remember freaking out when he showed up in Dr Who and Hot Fuzz!
Best Bond
Ironically For Your Eyes Only was one of Roger Moore's more serious Bond films. It would have fitted Dalton perfectly. He could have carried Bond for the entire 80s like Connery did in the 60s, Moore in the 70s, Brosnan in the 90s and Craig in the 2000s
He was a head of his time it’s a shame he did not do a 3rd film been interesting to see what kind of bond film it would have been
He was a very good Bond 🙌
All I know him is for James Bond and bad guy in rocketter 😅
Tremendous🖤
Timothy Dalton in Scarlett would have made Clark Gable proud.
Young Timothy would have been a perfect Superman. He would have brought darkness, down to earth charm and most importantly believable story telling to the screen.
LOL, nah. However, it's cool to see him as a more wreckless and sinister Zod.
Roger Moore is My Bond
Dalton was better than Craig as Bond. But he lacked that humouristic flare and charisma that Connery and Moore had.
He also had a weird haircut and clothes as Bond. It could have been much better.
He’s my favorite Bond!
