Like everyone else, I've been fascinated with this amazing lens. But, with a colection of a dozen modern and classic Leica M-mount lenses, I'm going to be buying the Voightländer Nokton 50 mm f1.0, my first non-Leica M-mount lens, as my superfast 50. The sharpness, (lesser) vignetting, and price to performance make the Nokton my choice.
LOL, Come on Matt, honestly. Do you really think some guy who pays just under £10000, for a F0.95 Noctilux is really going to be bothered about £90 price of a filter? Yep, that filter broke the deal, no Noctilux for me I am afraid. Good photography as usual.
Yes sorry, an oversight on my part! I’m stuck between 2 worlds so I’m reporting a lens like it’s normal but in real life $90 is a lot for a filter! Ofc, if you are buying this lens you won’t care about the small extra cost!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom £90.00 is a lot of money to me, but then again, I still think that a roll of 120 TriX should be about £3.00 and not £12.00. PS: I am not a Yorkshireman.
Finally! A 0.95 review. It’s my first Leica Lens actually as I wanted one that does most work. Been using it for my professional work on SL2-S and the weight balance is perfect. Would like to hear more from you about the images though. ESP M9 vs SL rendering.
Yes sorry we’ll overdue! Annoyingly I found lots more footage I recorded but didn’t put in the video. Not my best review and I can do much better images (wait for the f1 new video and 90f2. Yes I failed to give a clear conclusion, like 90/1.5 sharp & great contrast where in focus, flares s lot but otherwise great for client work if shot wide open. I much prefer the f1 but not suitable for all clients as dark corners. (Could probably fix in post). M9 will always beat every Leica after it at iso 100-400. CCD wins for rendering
I blame you for my next purchase: my first LTM lens for my M camera, the Nikkor HC 50mm f2. The LTM black hole just opened and is pulling me in towards the quantum singularity…lol. I’m really enjoying the videos that cover vintage lenses. You should do a “poor man’s Thambar” episode! “Too clinical” should be the meme of 2022! Which of the Nocti’s do you think has the most “character,” by which I mean the opposite of when you said that you thought the Voigtlander f1 and the Nocti f.95 are almost “too perfect”? Keep up the excellent content!
Ha sorry Jack! Oh dear.. the LTM black hole is bottom less. It got me big time when I accidently found it. I've done 290+ vids so many include lenses and softer ones, cheaper ones. F1 Nocti for me. (See last video for 10 soft lenses).
I use the Noctilux mostly on my SL2. It is always a challenge to focus correctly on the rangefinder. I typically need to take a few shots to get one I like; that is why I prefer using the Summilux for portraits.
Thanks for sharing Matt! I'd never seen photos shot with the 50mm Noctilux before. The field curvature on this lens is nuts! It's particularly apparent in the pic at 4:45 and some of the others around it. I find the reduced bokeh that this gives towards the edge of the frame to be quite distracting, especially in some of the shots where your model isn't centred in the frame. Maybe my tastes aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate this one 😉, either way, it's not my favourite 50. Cheers.
Hi Jake, yes some lenses are better for centred subjects. I lot of the vintage lenses I like are like this. If you like perfect round bokeh see my Sigma L mount vids.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Cheers Matt. It's not so much the shape of the bokeh. I shoot a lot of old lenses and gear (Leica IIIc with various Leica and Canon lenses, multiple different 35mm SLRs, Mamiya medium format and some 4x5 when I get the time). I'm definitely a fan of lenses with interesting rendering and bokeh, just this one didn't float my boat. Of the 2 uber lenses you had on that shoot, for me at least, the Summilux 90mm f1.5 won hands down. Thanks again for sharing your amazing work!
I'd also add, the field curvature on this lens is probably a reason for a lot of the issues people in the comments have had with critical focus when using this lens. It would be really interesting for you to include some information on field curvature in some of your lens reviews.
Hi, Matt. Lovely bumping into you at aperture, hope I didn’t interrupt you. Thanks a million for the advice on the M2, you confirmed my gut feeling. And thanks again for all the hard work with these vids, they really are brilliant.
Excellent presentation. “Liked.” I chose the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton Aspheric option, with its notably smaller dimensions, and being a factor. (This Nokton does not, of course, replace my Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, as my favorite 50mm lens.)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom If 50mm were my favored focal length for portraits, I might well have spent the money for a pre-loved, pre-owned f/0.95 Noctilux, earlier this year. It was tempting. Instead, as I may have mentioned in a comment posted at one of your other videos, I bought a pristine, pre-owned APO Summicron 75mm ASPH, plus, the new Nokton 50mm f/1.0 VM.
I had this lens.........too perfect and lack of character and soul for me, now i use The amazing and tiny MS OPTICS 50 F1..........An amazing lens, if you can take a look, you will buy it for sure. Regards.
Hi Matt, do you find the framlines in vertical/portrait are a bit off? I'm using summilux pre asph 50mm, the left side is cut off slightly have to adjust the camera left to frame correctly. Normal/fault? TIA 😊
Interesting video, Matt, but wouldn't a Canon FD 85mm 1.2 L do the trick? You could combine it with a Canon F-1 New or any mirrorless full frame digital camera. Of course you would have to step back a little bit.
Thanks Kalle. Canon gives AF too! They are probably not comparable and I think the 1.2 is said to be too soft wide open (vs Leica - made to look great wide open) but yes for sure there are cheaper solutions. (Nokton 75/1.5 is my best pick)
I use two Ms for work, and summicron lenses -all pre-owned. The Noctilux would be nice, as would be a 21 mm or an M9 Monochrom to play. Not really needed, Won’t buy. Said that, yes it renders lovingly.
My wish for the Leica M is to see an 8000 on the shutter speed dial. I thought the M11 would be the one but Ah well. For me other than light gathering, a 0.95 aperture would be Interesting for full body portraits when I need to move away from people but I still need that interesting 3D look. Other than that they’re just way too uncomfortable to use. Out of all those I would still choose the Voigtlander 50f1.2 for a Leica M.
This obsession with fast glass and “creamy bokeh” is quickly ruining photography. Newbies are going to start shooting landscapes wide open at 0.95. It’s so tacky.
Weird comment from an apparent member of the taste police? I don't know if you've noticed, but people have been making shit photos ever since the invention of photography. Now there are just more options to put more of it out of focus, which is fine by me. It's just another tool to use and abuse. If you're annoyed with the newbies using fast glass, just filter your youtube recommendations a bit better and you can tell yourself that your fast glass is only used by the pros.

Is the lack of vignetting on the M9 optical or a result of in-body lens code adjustments?
It's the f1 older lens that has the darker corners, the 0.95 has much less vignetting by design.
