    I remember when Odyssey came out, few weeks after that I had a holidays in Greece. We visited a museum in Athens which has many historical things from back then in ancient Greek architecture and folklore stuff. Everything I saw in Odyssey was there. They really made this game properly, they did their research for sure !!! As well we went to Delphi (my fav. location in greece hands down). The tour you can do in Odyssey in Delphi was like I was there for 2nd time for real ! The amount of detail they put into last 3 AC games is just mindblowing.

      Props are really amazing, story is pretty cool, Cassandra and also many other characters are really worth getting to know. Then again gameplay is a bad joke of a repetetive crap with mindlessly lazy designed combat - scaled-enemies, action devoid of any player-skill based approach, difficulty means damage sponge - and have I mentioned the whole environment tries really hard to destroy any feel of any real exploration (i.e. getting rewarded for being observant and trying things out). • @aenearion5503
      @aenearion5503 3 года назад

      Kephallonia has a mountain sized statue of Zeus carved from stone, which legitimately implies people carved a mountain away. Odyssey is set during the height of the Peloponnesian War, yet apparently hoplites don’t know how to fight in phalanxes at the height of Ancient Greek military influence. Yes, some serious historical sites that are presented in Odyssey are done well, but so much historical work was done on a lot of those areas that I would hardly credit Ubisoft.
      In the trailer for the first Assassin’s Creed, Altair uses a crossbow which was removed from the game because they found out after the trailer release that it was unlikely to have usage during that time period. Assassin’s Creed 3 had Redcoats forming firing lines and using known historical tactics to try and fight Connor, and also gave the player a mechanic to deal with that situation. These guys couldn’t be bothered with most of this depth, and that’s partially allowed due to the lack of written historical sources.
      It looks amazing, sure, but historical masterpiece?
      Doesn’t help that the story was atrociously boring.

    • @TheDoats
      @TheDoats 3 года назад +1

      @@aenearion5503 there aren't too many assassins that fight in phalanx. It's still a video game. The architecture all the way down to the pottery are correct. A greek archeologist reviewed the game and about creamed herself at the accuracy of everything. It's a historical masterpiece and the closest we may ever get to a time machine. These guys are putting in ridiculous amounts of research for a video game and that far overlooks them not adding a phalanx in an assassin game.

    • @aenearion5503
      @aenearion5503 3 года назад +1

      @@TheDoats The hoplites need to be the ones fighting in phalanx, not the Assassins. That was the primary fighting style of hoplites, who were the main fighting force of most Greek city states. The way they were armed and armoured revolved around fighting in a phalanx. Odyssey instead has huge hulking guys with little to no armour each wielding a mace that size of one's head in each hand which would have been far too unwieldy to actually use in combat.
      Yes, lots of realism.
      Yes, a lot of the architecture and the small details down to the pottery are correct, but essentially every AC game has had that level of detail, and I notice that you completely ignored the point I raised about a certain mountain sized statue which I'm sure is completely historical. Also the idea of something being a historical masterpiece yet avoiding historical truth about ancient societal norms that by modern standards would be abhorrent is laughable. Ancient Greece did have better sanitary conditions -for the most part- than Dark Ages Europe, but it also had widespread paedophilic acceptance, so much so that Ancient Greek poets would write about it. You can't eliminate inconvenience regarding history then say it is a historical masterpiece.
      There are parts of Odyssey that are good, and there are areas where you can see they've put work in. But almost every triple AAA budget release of AC has this level of historical detail. I have no idea why you think it's a historical masterpiece compared to something like Assassin's Creed 2 or Black Flag, which have similar levels of depth.
      As I said in my previous post, a lot of this research is widely spread, while as research for AC Unity likely came from hundreds of conflicting sources, and research for Black Flag would have been far more difficult to do than this, due to lack of site preservation and general confusion/mismanaged reporting of events happening in the area at the time.
      Odyssey is based around a time period that has a few main written sources and lots of good site preservation for archeological sources.

      Assassin's Creed has never been 100% historically accurate in any game in the Series so I don't understand why people complain about them taking a slightly different direction with the Vikings. It's Assassin's Creed not History Geographic.

    I was q classics major and was also blown away by the visuals in this game. I loved that they had a tour feature outside the game. The scenery, including the water, was gorgeous. Unfortunately, Ubisoft let it all down with incessantly repeating the same quests over and over. After you have explored dozens of look alike tombs, conquered dozens of look alike forts, etc, it starts affecting your overall impression.

    The level of research that must go into AC games must be incredible. As someone who has studied Greek Mythology, I loved the idea behind Odyssey, and the beauty of the landscape, rivals RDR2 for me. But the historical research the devs must have done to have recreated such a vast world is really incredible. It's a shame that the gameplay/missions, don't really live up to the same kind of standards as the environment. Same with Valhalla tbh. Missions are so "samey" very little has changed from game to game, except now it's more of a hack n slash than a stealth assassination game, sometimes I feel like the world's are too big, so much to see and do, but the missions all become similar after a while that it just doesn't seem worth the effort to complete
