      How is it possible to publish such a fake video? There is not the real picture and Cyprus is definitely not a poor country! We have been affected by the European economic crisis but we are definitely not one of the poorest European countries!! England dealt with economic crash in 2008 as well, stop trying to humiliate Cypriot economic situation by publishing such a disgusting and non-sense video. People watching this are not stupid, they understand that this video is crap. At the end of the day you are humiliating yourselves and whoever worked to produced this video.

      This is ridiculous! People eat chickens, pigeons, pigs and so many other animals and birds. The "fake" was referring to the way this video presents Greeks as the "bad guys" and as the poor people who have to eat this species of birds because they are starving. This is fake and ridiculous! It presents a fake point of view of Greek peoples lifestyle and food habits. Haha why are you referring to the bankruptcy? First of all this video is about Cypriots and you are referring to the Greek bankruptcy. This is stupid. Why are you arguing if you have no idea about Greek and Cypriot history, lifestyle, economic situation and politics. Stupid people

      ***** what i meant was greek cypriots eat them, I know, they pickle them, i dnt know if greeks from greece do though. Its common in Malta also and a couple of other places. It is decimating the local small bird population as hundreds are caught in the net, It aint good enough to say they like them, so do bounty hunters like killing lions and elephants etc for skins and tusks but hay, what will they do when they are extinct ,?? Many of these species are becoming endangered , Humans need to get a grip and bloody care about the world.

    these birds have struggled, sometimes for hours, before dieing. there's barely any meat, yet they're cooked (apparently for a long time) in saltwater instead of atleast stir fried or something more adequate. if that bird had any taste of it's own before, it's definitely gone by then. which might be a good thing, since they would definitely taste rather shitty, being all tense and shit. what a complete waste.
    sometimes traditions just have to go.

    • @ZanderVanBarrel
      @ZanderVanBarrel 9 лет назад +38

      They are very fatty thats what makes them so special. So by frying them you melt all the fat away and there is no much left. Boiling them for like 20 mins max is the best way and then u can make a nice bulgur or rice in the broth. They are best served and eaten with a lot of lemon and salt. 2 or 3 birdies are enough, to eat more can give u some stomach issues since they are fatty. Afterall they are just an appetiser and not a meal and they are usually eaten in companion to some destilates. Every animal stuggles to death one way or another.Have u ever seen how a komodo kills its pray? How a constrictor snake pops the eyes of its food? How a spider wraps them up? or even how a cat can play for hours with a mouse until it eats it.I dont think u realise how privileged u r to be out of the food chain. Just enjoy it, just like a lion would have done with you.I dont get why everyone is so concerned about the extinction of a bird that in their mind didnt exist til the last half an hour.

    • @skaybestrog
      @skaybestrog 9 лет назад +4

      Cooking bulgur in songbird broth actually sounds pretty decent, I'd be down for that. The actual bird looked pig disgusting tho, nothing but glibbery fat (and I usually love fat..). My comment on the struggle of the bird was concerning taste, not ethics (even though it is definitely ethically unjustifiable..). You just don't want whatever you're eating to struggle because it'll obviously drastically reduce the quality of the meat.

      ***** Well, if comercial trapping continues, eventually, no one will. Maybe put a ban on serving songbird in resturaunts, but set up a specific trapping season, so the birds have time to repopulate, but families can still enjoy their culinary heritage.

    I am Cypriot, it's the older generation that likes this type of meze like 50 year old's and up, measures fines and prison sentences are in place and many have been convicted or fined. I have tasted 4-5 times in gatherings etc it tastes like shit because of the digestive enzymes and that you are supposed to cook it whole and eat it whole including the intestinal contents aka feces. I don't like the taste at all and will never eat it again but older generation eat it cause they learned it from their father etc and it became kinda cultural forbidden fruit that tastes better because it's illegal and hard to get. This documentary said every back yard in Cyprus has a songbird trap factory operation lol i can assure you it's probably less than 1000 people doing this and probably they will die in the next 10 years.

    Traditional, very small scale trapping for family use should be separated from the industrial scale trapping of song birds. Individuals in Cyprus were able to harvest songbirds sustainably, maintaining a balance with nature for hundreds of years. But the industrial poaching and even large scale lime-sticking of these endangered species seems so wrong. Humanity is quickly destroying the planet using these same types of large scale harvesting practices- trawling comes to mind.

  • @Christ191090
    @Christ191090 8 лет назад +41

    I really appreciate the Vice network and their work. I agree with both the legal and ethical issues raised. But as others have already mentioned this is a very selective and dramatic depiction of the situation in Cyprus. And there are Cypriot activists that oppose these practices and are pretty vocal about it. That is why the society in Cyprus condemns these practices. A very good example of that would be the outrage that an MP caused by publicly admitting to eating song birds. It's not the "civilized" Europeans against the "uncivilized" Cypriots. It's more like people who hang on to this "tradition" and people who are against it. There is no need to generalize, or put labels on people. And I would encourage people commenting here to be more careful with their allegations. Using solid arguments against this idiotic tradition would be much more effective in stopping it rather than throwing unfounded allegations and accusing a whole nation for something that is caused by a minority.

      it sounds like the British government is more culpable than the average Cypriot population honestly. it seems like young Cypriots want them to do a lot more to enforce the ban. as "guests in the country," why aren't they enforcing that country's laws?

    • @mickvonbornemann3824
      @mickvonbornemann3824 2 года назад

      Well what are you doing to stop the slaughter? Evil only exits when good people do nothing. Unless people like you go around & actively remove these lime sticks & mist nets & punish the pricks they'll keep the slaughter going. BTW poor people can't afford to spend every second day hanging around cafes. These are old buggers, meaning easy to punish by beating the fuck out of them. So get up & apply some behaviour modification training to these old farts.

    • @mickvonbornemann3824

    • @mickvonbornemann3824
      @mickvonbornemann3824 2 года назад

      If you buggers that are against it form 70% of the population you should be able to intimidate the other 30% into ending this practice. All the 70% have to do is show a willingness to be as violent as them. Look at the billions being spent in Ukraine due to a violent minority of Ukrainian Nazi thugs & bullies persecuting the people of Donbass for 8 years straight, they've changed the history of the planet.

    A very misinformed coverage. The reporter focuses on the area of Ayia Napa, a small municipality with many issues. In the large cities like Nicosia or Limassol it's hard to find locals who will agree with the practice. I was appalled by the shots that presented Cyprus as an undeveloped poor country whereas anyone who knows the island will know that this is not the case. Most acts and organizations against songbird poaching are run by locals, instead we see foreigners representing the good protectors and locals as the evil poachers (we do not see any locals opposing).

It is just speculations on what they think it might be worth and the number of birds killed. Obviously, they have an interest to inflate the number. This is very much a dying industry in Cyprus and it's popularity declined rapidly since the 90s.

    There are British documentaries about birds, that are a traditional Cypriot food, calling them massacre in Cyprus, while there is nothing about the continues violation of sovereignty, and illegal occupation of 36.2% of Cyprus by turkey, the two invasions, the numerous war crimes, the massacre of thousands of people, and the 1/3 of the population of Cyprus, being permanent refugees, even today, and not permitted to go to their homes, by the turkish army.
    There is also nothing about the current violation of the Cyprus seas by the turkey and the advancement in the green line a few moths ago. The hypocrisy in its highest level, and typically showing Cyprus as uncivilized and third world country. How else can they justify that?
    Don't forget to also make a documentary, about the hunting of foxes on England. showing them in blood, and saying how the future king of England has just massacred them.

    +Munchies This video exposes a reality that goes on in Cyprus for a long time. Something that passed from tradition to criminal activity. However, I find the whole video driven by a need to dramatize the whole story by talking about poverty, crisis and setting a false image of ALL CYPRIOTS BEING BAD.

    For me personally it's not so much the fact of eating songbirds (because anybody that eats chicken or duck is the same), it's the way of catching and killing them. It would be way better to have them in a pen all together and maybe once upon a time, gas them all... Or something other harm and stressless...

    You can find sparrows on the menu in varous parts of Asia. The first time I saw it was a restaurant in Kyoto but they were sold out. The second time was also in Kyoto but this time it was in a street market.stall so I bought one to try, the guts were cleaned out, leaving the head with its brains and the body and it was smaller than a small quail. The bird was skewered and grilled, its bones were so soft you can crunch them , didn`t have very much taste aside from the seasonings (mainly soy sauce and some kind of sweetening). The reason I said in various parts of Asia, even though I`ve only seen them in Japan, is because my dad told me about eating sparrows in China where he grew up. Also I was told that you find sparrows in Kyoto because it was a regional delicacy, you might not find this elsewhere in Japan as easily.

Does that tradition hurt the birds population that badly? Why dont u mention that? I mean its effect on its population. Oh yeah, lets carry on killing bulls in bullrings because it's 'tradition'. Let's keep up with the shark finning, because it's tradition. Why don't we keep bear-baiting too? That's tradition as well. What about using vultures brains to help us with our telepathy? That's a tradition too. Stop basing your ideology on the ignorant belief that we're superior. Our traditions aren't as important as an entire species. If traditions need to disappear to save a species, i don't give a fuck what it is.

      And when the birds go extinct, will they resort to cannibalism? Seems appropriate.

      No... They really don't. How can the loss of unique and important wildlife be justified by people who just want money and say that's for culture?

    They've just remembered our existence! That there is a small island, a dot on the earth map, with the largest massacre of songbirds.. That's interesting people!!

    The documentary tried to portray the issue in a balanced way but hugely overestimated the problem. Most Cypriots don't consume ampelopoulia regularly, some including myself had never even tried them and it is not really cypriot tradition but rather just a local tradition of some villages located close to and in the Uk milititary base area. Ampelopoulia are not in the most traditional dishes and most Cypriots oppose the consumption of them. For some it is a tradition and I am ambivalent about catching some with limesticks as a hobby, but a majority of Cypriots agrees that nets and large scale operations are a problem.

    Living in Cyprus and seeing this unfoil yearly it is an accurte portrayal, of a complacent people with absolutely no respect for the environment overall or any kind of wildlife. Go on a walk on any hill around the Larnaca area, Oroklini, Dekhelia, and you will find shotgun pellets everywhere in preserved areas, shots fired and garbage everywhere. Hundreds of thousands are slaughtered every year. When the British authorities got involved the coward locals threw explosives at the base in the middle of the night. The island is well-fed, lazy, complacent and primitive. There is absolutely no way to claim they lack anything. And locals will always get defensive when confronted with the reality of where their country is going, whether in regards to corruption, lack of environmental respect or basic issues of appreciation towards your fellow man or animal. Sad reality after years of living here, of a third world country masquerading as an EU member.

    Why can’t they just make farming song birds legal? Then trapping of wild song birds will be reduced significantly?

    Can i just say that because a handful of Cypriots still practice this way of hunting of hunting these birds, doesn't mean the rest of us are as uneducated or approve of this practice. this is not an accurate representation of the people of Cyprus.

    They kill the goats and chickens and such, but they farm those animals, these controversial birds cannot be farmed, which makes it an entirely different ballgame.
