Great review! My favorite album so far, post-2000. The lyrics and melodies are wonderful and nice to hear a upbeat, fun album. I adore The Open Chord! WCN is in my Top 10 all-time EJ albums. I also love the four bonus tracks. T. Bone should have given it a much more open polished sound to truly capture the wonderful band but that’s my only minor complaint.

I always enjoy putting this CD on. Glad you like The Open Chord.

Great to hear from you again, John!
I've only listened through this album twice since buying it on the day of release in 2016. I felt the songs were forgettable, and that it was poorly mixed. I had to do some EQing on my car stereo just to try and bring the lead vocal to the front where it should be, but somehow isn't. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. Perhaps I need to go back and give it another listen when I next have a long car trip. You spoke so lovingly of some of the tracks, after all. That deserves a third look.
I'd personally be fine if Elton never released another album. He's given the world so much great music. I'm just grateful for what he's done. Of course, if he wants to put out another one, I'll buy it to complete the collection. If it's good, then great. If not, well, he's done the album because he wants to, not because he has to fulfill obligations for anyone else, which he wholeheartedly deserves to do.

I read an interview in which he said there were lyrics ready but he was not ready to write any more music with Bernie yet. Guess we'll have to wait.

Great review, John! Elton did good with this one. But if I'm being honest, I prefer Elton's older music. Albums such as "Caribou", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Don't Shoot I'm Only The Piano Player" - to me - feel like Elton's most powerful moments. The earlier years were just filled with iconic songs that are pleasurable to listen too and even fun to learn. Like you I love learning Elton's songs on piano, I just find them so unique and catchy.

True. The seventies were a golden era. But, forty years on, to be producing songs of this quality is pretty impressive.

Blue Moves (1976) and Too Low For Zero (1983) are really great albums.

It’s an ok album although, if I’m honest, other than Looking Up, Wonderful Crazy Night and Blue Wonderful, I was slightly disappointed with it. I do like the album sleeve. I would place it as Elton and Bernie’s weakest album of the 2000s so far. 6.5/10 overall for me.

You could be right, though I do listen to this one a lot and I wouldn't say there is anything really bad on it.

Another good review, I enjoy what you have to say. However I did not enjoy this album, it is mediocre at best. Save "Blue Wonderful" and scrap the rest...

Elton has indeed made some mediocre songs, but the point is even the mediocre songs are still good!

It ain’t no Madman!! And there ain’t no Tiny Dancer or Indian Sunset or Levon or Holiday Inn. Terribly weak. One of his weakest.

      @eltonmusicfan  2 года назад

Certainly a different type of album from Madman, but it's a relaxing listen, I find.

Didn’t enjoy this album and feels it completely missed and continues to miss the mood of the lives of many of his listeners. It’s not an upbeat time. I feel this album completely misses the boat as opposed to the mature Diving Board

That's interesting. It's one of my most played albums, especially in the car. Maybe because it's not too demanding. I enjoy a lot of The Diving Board but not too sure about some of the production.

@@eltonmusicfan Great you like it John. I hear you about the production in the Diving board but to me that album had a lot of depth and maturity to it

IMO, Elton's weakest album since Leather Jackets. Even LJ was more inspired. He also started to sound old here. Most songs are like 'dad rock' and uptempo songs sound kinda forced.
The title track is by far his best here, although 2 bonus tracks are quite good too and better than most of the album.
    My rating:
    1. WCN - inspired riff, verse and chorus. I like it! 8/10
    2. In the Name of You - pretty simplistic and derivative. 5/10
    3. Claw Hammer - great instrumental intro, unique melody in verse, but chorus is totally out of place. All that atmosphere that song started was lost in the chorus. Don't care much about it. 5/10
    4. Blue Wonderful - musically interesting ballad, but for some reason it doesn't hit me the way it should.. probably because of not so much interesting chorus and his 'old' vocals 6/10
    5. I've Got 2 Wings - interesting story, musically boring 3.5/10
    6. A Good Heart - this sounds like classic Elton ballad, but we could also say that it's because of that pretty much 'safe' sound. Certainly not on a level of 'The One' or many other ballads, but still, a nice song.
Instrumental part is kinda out of place and sounds like something from his Vampire Lestat musical 6.5/10
    7. Looking Up - his worst 1st single ever and probably one of his worst singles ever. I just simply don't like this one.. it sounds so simplistic, childish, generic, forced and musically uninteresting. I can imagine 90 year olds dance to this (or at least trying to dance) in retirement homes. He made so much better uptempo songs. 3.5/10
    8. Guilty Pleasure - this is kinda catchy.... it sounds like something that could be on the 'Made in England' album. Still, not good like songs on MIE 6/10
    9. Tambourine - disappointing and musically boring like almost nothing he has done before. 'I Am Your Robot' is masterpiece compared to this 3.5/10
    10. The Open Chord - I didn't like much 'Too Many Tears' that sounds pretty much like this, but this one I like even less. Not bad, but strange and not in a good way 5/10
    Bonus:
    11. Free and Easy - I really like this one... it's so laid back, melody flows so naturally and it's still pretty unique and interesting to listen to. His vocals are also so much better here. It should have been on the album instead of 'Tambourine' in my opinion. Strange choice for instrumental part, but that makes it even more interesting. 7.5/10
    12. England and America - something like 'Made in England' song or 'Across the River Thames'. Very catchy and inspired. I like it. 8/10
    13. Children's Song - musically uninteresting to me 4.5/10
    14. No Monsters - sounds like 'Candlelit Bedroom musically gone wrong'. Weird song 4.5/10
This is the first time that I know that he made an album with some weak and boring melodies or that he managed to screw up a song with generic chorus.

I enjoy your observations and agree with most of your comments. I'm sorry you don't like Looking Up. Maybe I fall into the care home category! England and America is a fine track. Although there are no classics, I do enjoy this album and play it a lot. I like the production and the way Elton sounds.
