- Stella Power sings Gounod' 'Serenade,' recorded for Edison in New York on 14 October 1919.
Stella Power (1896-1977) was born in Richmond, Victoria. She received vocal lessons from Elsa Wiedermann (who had taught Melba), then Mary Campbell at the Albert Street Conservatorium in Melbourne. Melba took her on as her protege, and she became known as 'the Little Melba.' She toured the United States in 1918 and went to England in late 1919, remaining there until 1923. From 1924 to 1934, she sang in North America. Later, she returned to Australia.
What a delightful recording and a clear presentation of Stella Power's charming singing.
@@MichaelStBede Certainly a worthwhile singer.

Best wishes from George
@georgejohnson1498 Thanks George!
So very charming. Also note flute obbligato without a trace of vibrato, as was still widely considered classy in the early interbellum.
@jpknijff Yes of course. The lack of vibrato is something I hardly notice thanks to my familiarity with early recordings!
@@vintagesounds3878Call it an obsession, I'm still fascinated to notice how it creeps in in flute playing (but still hardly with excellent flautists in early 1940s Germany).
