Roberto D'Alessio (tenor) - Ay, Ay, Ay (Freire) (1926)
Roberto D'Alessio sings 'AY, Ay, Ay,' with orchestra presumably conducted by Lorenzo Molajoli, recorded in Milan on 9 December 1926.
D'Alessio (1893-1975) was an Italian tenor who had a career that spanned the years 1921 to 1937. Subsequently, he taught singing.
The Historical Tenors site tells us, 'Roberto D'Alessio was a distinguished tenor, always favourably received by critics and public. His interpretations were sober, elegant and serious. However, he could never reach the highest places in the tenors rank, perhaps due to the hard competence of tenors with the same class of voice, ''tenore di grazia''.'

Another unknown Bantock piece for me. The out of the way treasures of the recording industry shows us that there was a lot of accessible new music at a time when tuneful and energetic music seems to have lived side by side with much more difficult music such as the atonalists and serialists. For reasons beyond me the more difficult music was at the time was preferred by music critics, but even that has largely faded for the repertoire by now. The value in these rarities is that it shows us things that we otherwise would never have guessed the existence of! Best wishes from George

This is a favourite overture for me, despite is rarity these days. I think its unfashionable status is a real loss. I have a rare recording not issued at the time from 1960 with the Philharmonia and Klemperer, and they recorded only a "Take One" right at the end of session at Kelmperer's suggestion [though oddly the parts were already on the music stands - methinks Klemperer wanted to record something EMI did not want, and he was capable of such japes]. It is towering rendition with stunning un-rehearsed playing from the orchestra. Just like the sort of thing you might hear as a live concert opening overture. The horns roar like bull calves at the end and every thing except the opening dotted chords comes off superbly! EMI did not see fit to do any further efforts at getting it ready for a releasable recording so it stay in the the archives for over fifty years, before Testament rightly brought it out warts and all. But this performances [slightly slower than Klemperer's electric quick reading] is a well polished "bullseye!" And you know I reserve that for very few newly discovered recordings. The BBC mine seems to be worth mining! I suspect the BBC were recording in Munich given the variety of conductors [and one may surmise, different recording sessions]. One ask why as the various German radio stations of the time were also making recordings of the first quality. Still a bit of a mystery! Thanks and best wishes from George

An interesting piece for a military band to tackle. They seem at ease with it though. Little side note about Haydn Wood. The last recording of Elgar's lifetime of his own music was a little piece called Mina [the name of one of his Cairn Terriers] and the score was given to Fred Gaisberg only a few weeks before the composer died. Gaisberg immediately set up a recording of this little piece with J Ainsley Murray conducting the small orchestra, and Elgar was presented with a rush pressing. By then time was short. A year later Haydn Wood conducted the Light Symphony Orchestra on a fine record that was published, and which incorporated the the expressive markings Elgar suggested on listening to Murray's rush recording. It is a lovely little piece and Wood got to wistful nostalgic heart of the little piece of music in a most sympathetic way. These Elgar miniatures can be so elusive. Like trying to catch a butterfly without hurting it. Wood let it fly without trying to catch it for sure. I just listened to it after many years as a result of this upload. Sorry for the off-topic. Best wishes from George Here is a video of a cine film of Elgar with his Cairns and Spaniel and beautifully we get Richard Hickox conducting "Mina" I love dogs and see these little rascals being ruined with love by a great man is something beautiful I think. ruclips.net/video/5w-HTlke8mg/видео.html

@@vintagesounds3878 Wood's record of Mina was exactly how Elgar's miniatures show go - quite brisk and full of inflection. EMI/HMV did not have to go to the trouble for the great composer, but they did. Gaisberg and and on Ronald would have had considerable influence on the Board at the time. I know this is well off topic, but it sort of shows that Haydn Wood was not only a remarkable conductor, but also a wonderful composer. I'd call this a bullseye upload. Best wishes from George

This is magically great. Coates certainly knew the styles, but this is not mere pastiche. It transcends that limitation. Basically it is music of its time that fully manages the trick of evoking the eras of the previous times and its own time ... Those who were sniffy [snobbish] about Coates' music were those who never wrote anything still worth remembering! Critics included!! I listened to the first three quarters this morning before work, and now return from the start. The playing and recording are exemplary, and of course Coates knew what he was doing on the podium. A more perfect performance would be hard to imagine. Recorded in the last few days of WW II, this sounds like it is based on EMI's rather than Decca's system, but is remarkably free and giving a proper sense of space. Indeed probably about as close to the state of the art of actual recording at the time, and dear VS, your transfer is simply lets us hear the whole wonderful thing! Probably appeals to me more than non Anglophone listeners, but that is okay Thank you sincerely for one of the most out of the way recordings I have listened to in a while, and best wishes from George

@georgejohnson1498 Thanks George. I agree wholeheartedly! This is different from the Coates we hear in his late 1920s recordings, but equally appealing. And yes, the quality is excellent, being helped by relatively clean vinyl pressings. I really need to mine the collection of these BBC transcriptions that I acquired fairly recently!
