Billy was the one who got rid of the bass in 1972. He says so in his unfinished memoirs (9-09 edition). He thought it was gone for good, but after it's been found again, he has to act like it's a thrill.

They are serial numbered. Hofner Violin Bass guitars production numbers were very low in '72. Still are.
