A rail service started between Tokyo and Yokohama in 1872. This initial route relied greatly on British assistance, as the European power supplied financing, train cars, and even the chief civil engineer Edmund Morel. This is just my own observation from this, I mean I'm not even caught up on the anime or have read the manga, but I think the public not believing in demons is supposed to be a reference to how around that period of time, late 1800s to early 1900s, in real world Japan the publics interest veered away from superstition and yokai, resulting in more and more people not believing in such things as the country began to modernize and industrialize. You can even see this in the generational gap between the bento seller girl and her grandma. Ignoring the fact that the grandma was preyed upon by demons, as far as we know twice, she would've been raised in that real world time when superstition, spirits, yokai, etc. were more widely believed, as opposed to her granddaughter who would have been born and raised around the time when this public belief started to wane.

The writer wanted to have The Demon Slayer Corp to be like a secret organization, but the problem with that Trope always comes back. There is so much evidence about them just basically everywhere and you have active survivors who would talk about it, even though most of them would probably been seen as crazy but anytime this is employed in fiction it falls apart because of one simple reason, PEOPLE 👏ARE👏INSANE👏! You would have people actively going out and looking for Demons because they can. You have people in the real world who spend there lives and huge amounts of money looking for mythical creatures, and in this universe they would find something as evidence. I guess you could say people wouldn't believe it if they didn't find and bring back an actual Demon, but that is possible for a normal person to do. Sanemi used to tie up Demons to trees and wait for the sun to come up so they'd die since he didn't have a Nichirin Blade, and this was BEFORE he learned to use any Breathing Style. If he could do it others could too. It's not just a problem with Demon Slayer it's a problem with any piece of fiction that uses this Trope, unless it's like M.I.B or Harry Potter were they have the ability to mind wipe people on a mass scale. But that just raises another question, why hide it from people? Wouldn't you want people to know so they know what to do in case they ever find themselves in a situation like this? It's why I liked when a series like MHA or Mob Psycho just said F##K it and made it so that yeah this exists and people know about it, they just don't care because at that point it's just common knowledge. This series is pretty good in all things considered but this just bugs me personally.

The old man in episode 1 believed in there existence, tanjiro didn’t (at that point). Tanjiros Grandma even told him tales about demons. The boy from the swamp demon fight was also starting to realize that demons might be real after seeing Tanjiro’s speed and jump height. We don’t hear him say it fully but he was thinking in his mind “are you a demon slayer?” (I think). The grandma and her granddaughter that sold bento are also another example. @@mahistv I agreed with what said above- but mind is an amazing thing when 'common sense' is concerned and history shows that the government of Japan- especially the shogunate succeed to 'making' their people VERY susceptible to propaganda. This is why Tokugawa Shogunate last for so long. You can watch 'Shogo' a Japanese youtuber bringing up issues of Bushido and the likes, and how old belief they practiced is all about 'restraining' their people but 'looks' good at the same time.
In the case of this war.
In Taisho period and previous, Japan is making leaps and bound for the industrial revolution and old belief in youkai/superstitions is seen as hindrance to this development. Even a rural boy like Tanjirou shows he is educated to not believe in the likes of demons like older generation in episode 1.
Also as much as I agree with you on how stupid Muzan can be, I acknowledge the guy has enough brains to not make his extermination a national project.
It's very likely at the beginning his war with the corps is pretty 'open' but as the corps is losing miserably before Yoriichi, I imagine the government at the time are too busy beating each other up to care helping Ubuyashiki clan. Muzan also shows he is not going to mess with the government either, simply because he still need to find his flower and doesn't want more nuisance in his life goal. Also... in Sengoku and Heian era, humans died like bugs in Japan apparently so the lost isn't all that concerning to them.
So by Taisho period, aside from not wanting to spread panic over cannibalistic demons- and have more important things in government's agenda. It already become a 'common sense' to let Ubuyashiki and his corps deal with Kibutsuji and demons.
I can't imagine the government would bother until the disaster in the entertainment district happened. Even then, I imagine they would just rage at Demon Slayer Corps for not dealing with it in quieter manner and destroy the district. However... they would not bother to make Muzan their business. The district is just a 'prettier' slump in the end. Also, don't tell me the Ubuyashiki with their crazy wealth wouldn't take responsibility to 'rebuild' the whole thing anyway.
So yeah... the war is a 'private' thing the government doesn't want to deal with...
and there's already a 'set' common sense that reject supernaturals in place.
Just ask Gyomei and Giyuu- it doesn't end well for them... the poor guys.

I'd always thought that people did know about demons since honestly, they don't really do much to cover up their tracks if at all. Like, there is the kakushi but they kind of do more relief and cleanup than coverups. I thought it was just that the demon slayer organization isn't recognized by the government (which could be explained with Muzan threatening the people in charge) so they have to move discreetly because of the sword ban, not that the whole organization or the existence of demons was a secret. Especially since Tanjiro's not shy about just straight up telling people about demons a lot of the time? As for why it's not widely known, it's probably because the technology to quickly spread information wasn't there yet. Also since most people wouldn't want to talk about their traumatic encounter where they almost got eaten.

I see your point, but we clearly see newspapers writing about it. and 100 years ago wasn't that far back in terms of information spread. I mean, yes, you won't get it instantly but over a span of weeks gossip and shit will go around

    • @dflaming1371
      @dflaming1371 2 года назад +12

I agree. I think it's shown many times throughout the series that some or many people DO know about demons-the old man on Tanjirou's mountain, the lady at the train station, the lady in charge of Daki's house, plus Kakushi as a stand by population and Wisteria Houses. However, this is Japan. You don't go around talking about these things or acting crazy, especially if the government says no. The government doesn't recognize demons as existing or a threat, either because of the panic it will cause or simple disbelief. So you don't think about it, and if you do see something and live, who's going to believe you?
You are also dealing with class systems. Prostitutes, kids, farmers, and random civilians can EASILY be written off or ignored, if they are even able put together what happened to them or what caused such destruction properly. Japan to this day is very much a place of open, silenced secrets even if you can prove something distasteful
So that overarchea everything. Then there are MANY other factors
If you see a demon, it's going to be in a traumatic incident, so you might later believe you were seeing things or traumatized into seeing a monster
If a demon looks human enough, it's just a brutal murder in your eyes, nothing supernatural. Just some evil guy in the dark with tattoos and such
A demon could have an Art to hide itself/temporarily blind you/wipe memories, etc, like Tamayo's or even Enmu's ability.
And just like the triple demon Tanjirou fought early on, and Muzan in the city, they are often sneaky or simply fast enough to not be seen at all by bystanders.
If there are, say, ten normal civilians on a road who come across a demon, right on the border of a town, what's the likelihood they live to say anything at all? Low. Very low. It's just a tragic mystery
Not to mention this all happens at night, and most populations weren't as dense as Tokyo then. Your neighbors might only be a few of you or far between, or both
Who's going to believe a rumor of 100 or so country hicks who saw a demon? If even that many even saw, believed, and reported it?
Plus, death was a much more widespread and expected problem. That is just true for most of time anyway
In a modern era or advanced city, such reports and stories are just legend. It only takes a generation or two to forget anyway

I believe it's a mix between old folk legends and the time in which all of this takes place.
The Japanese have long held a strong belief in the existence of Oni and Yokai. And undoubtedly, there are many inhabitants of (small) villages who swear that they have seen a Demon.

(6:02) You are probably right. Muzan has great government connections. I would place a lot of the blame on the Daimyo. I know Demon Slayer takes place in the Tashio period; however, this period may be the reason why most people do not believe in demons. During the Edo period(1603-1876), Daimyo fought bloody wars against each other. Both demons and slayers would be valuable assets. Both sides probably made deals with lords to help their sides. Demons would be kill the Daimyo's enemies in exchange for human flesh, riches, and help keeping their existence a secret. If someone saw a demon kill or eat a human, the Daimyo could easily cover up the act. The Daimyo could say that the demon is a warrior from another land or is part Kami. Alternatively, they can bribe the peasant or kill them. This would cover up most of centuries long war between Muzan and the slayers. Eventually, the Muzan got lucky. He made friends with the Choshu and Satsuma clans. They gladly covered up any demon related incidents and killed many of the Demon Slayer Corp's allies.

Not including the twelve kizuki, Muzan and Hashiras , the ‘war’ between humans and demons seems like no side is winning.
Now we add Hashiras who can kill almost any demon. Demons seem to go undercover and have ‘human lives’ to prevent from getting killed. Like what Daki did/does.

I think the main reasoning is low tier demons usually try and lay low to not attract demon slayers because most low tier demons get bodied by them and can thus maybe be attributed to general people going missing kidnappers, getting lost, wild animals, etc. Then at least some of the moons set up bases in which they can pretty freely kill people EX Drum demon, Rui, Daki, Doma, where they are either considered a regular thing or somewhat of local ghost stories. When a moon goes all out like in the mugen train or in the entertainment district I can imagine they would be attributed to natural disasters and people who claim to have seen demons are probably considered crazy. Considering Japan was a highly spiritual nation during that period, and the lack of a general knowledge historically everywhere among common folk, most people would probably think demons to be evil spirits. And considering ghosts are also a thing (Tanjiro's boulder training), there are probably other mystical beings around too. The government may have parts of it denying any spiritual involvement, but there are sure to be others that think the Demon Slayers are just a group of exorcists and priests. With firearms also being on the rise, there would be no need for superstrength soldiers in the army either.

By that point in Japan more people were thinking along the lines of this "Oh hey Gods, Yokai and spirits are all myth or folk lore" etc. Now lets put this into a modern perspective. Would you believe a random man on the streets dressed up as a vampire hunter or something saying "don't worry everyone i am here to kill vampires" you'd think they're crazy. Especially if a group of people did that. But what if they weren't crazy would you still believe them when Vampires are supposedly fake? Most likely not. Not lets go back to 1920s japan. Information doesn't spread as well as it does now. Demons are rare and scarce, and as you said Muzan probably has the Emperor afraid of him so he doesn't do anything rash, now the Emperor could just outright ban Demon Slayers and have them arrested. But how the fuck are you going to arrest a man who is killing demons who can easily level a building when they're on the weaker side. Now these are just my thoughts, but given the context of the story they fit a lot better.

My two counter arguments against your points:
    1. Taisho period of Japan was notoriously unstable (hence the shortest era of Japan, 14 years lol). The wealth divide was huge. There were mass protests and riots from peasants and workers. Lives weren’t safe and the rich only got richer. This Only people living in cities, and specifically people with wealth, were really accounted for. Farmers and workers who lived in the country side and boonies were not accounted for by the government of the time. And if any people in poverty went missing or died, the news of them going missing would travel very slowly as well as no body in positions of power at the time really cared or had the resources to investigate what was happening.
    2. Corruption was also rampant. I’m pretty sure Muzan’s finances were able to keep many demons off the books. Demons were also very well hidden in plain sight. Entertainment district showed that many people simply did not report what they witnessed to authorities because of what I mentioned in point 1 and also because people were afraid they will get killed mysteriously if they poked their nose in those situations.
There are so many unresolved missing person cases and mysterious deaths back then. And many times, those cases were simply closed out because, well, people died and authorities simply moved on because they couldn’t solve it.
Surprisingly, I’d say that Demon Slayers were doing a good job eradicating low threat demons and very responsive to the investigation of abnormal events like several missing persons.
But then again, this is a fictional world, it’s okay to suspend our disbelief and enjoy the show.

And all the demons that make people go missing just eat the person who went to go investigate.
I do believe there are some rumors about demons but since nobody has definitive proof (Not even the slayer corps themselves) people just think of them of a rumor and maybe even a “Explanation” for a disease of some sort.

When the police came to the house where Gyomei took care of the children, the police asked the youngest girl that Gyomei protected what happened
She said that he killed all of them (she was talking ab the demon btw), the sun had risen so the demon died, due to the police not seeing the demon they thought it was Gyomei because he was the only other person there and then Gyomei was arrested

It’d easily be a tense state of war which would play a heavy toll on their psyche. Muzan could teleport anywhere with that Infiniti room stuff and I’m sure he’d master infecting people in such a way they quietly transform and become sleeper agents thus adding more panic till they all just collapse and submit.

I agree with your point, but you have to understand - in the entertainment district arc, there were many survivors. Put it this way - many people do not want to express their emotions or traumatic experiences so easily or so, without being teared down or not being able to speak elaborately so that no one can understand.
Let's say, depressed people in our modern days. Most of the depressed population doesn't even get a therapist or help, and they just put on a facade with a smile. This can be seen with shinobu, her sister died and she hides it all and her hatred with demons with a smile. Her original face was her true behaviour. Not that bright, but still better to open up. Just imagine inhumane entities destroying a town, and some organization not recognized by the government fighting it but barely won.
Nope, not tattle taling about that. Ain't no way I'm gonna tell this to the gov without some superhumans getting revenge for getting the entire Japanese military mobilised up against the demons. And to say the least - costs for fighting demons necessarily didn't matter because Japan was a prosperous nation, a very rich and resourceful nation, up until ww2. They duked it out against the Mongols, the Russians, the Americans, hell they handled the European imperials. So fighting demons might just be as costly as ww2.

    • @mahistv
      @mahistv  Год назад +1

Japan is not a rich nation. They never had much resources and the ones they had, were shit comparatively. It's through technology and innovation (also stealing other countries' tech) that they became prosperous.
As for military might, until WW2 Russia, America and European countries were leagues above and Japan had to make very "unfair" pact to make sure it doesn't go down. Example, when a Russian Royalty member came to Japan in 1800s (I nay be a bit off, haven't read those history books since high school), he unintentionally arrived on a ship that would single handedly wipe their entire navy and made all the officials scared shitless. That was one of the reasons Japan went on a huge industrial boom - they realize how far behind they were in comparison to the "old world"

Sanemi and Tanjiro where able to defend against some but Sanemi isn't a normal human and Tanjiro was okay in terms of strength if he was able to hold his own ground against a Nezuko who could grow in size like that, other people normally get killed on sight even if they go in groups of 30 or are armed soldiers, like Michikatsus group or the siblings of Sanemi

I don't know about that. It's hard to gage the amount of demons... Lets say Tanjiro gets a mission every few months, that's 4-6 missions a year. How many slayer are there? 100? 200? That'll make it 1000ish demons slain a year...
Of course, math here is guesstimation at best, but the number of demons can't be that small in this setting.

@@mahistv Well I guess my thing is, if only Muzan can create them, technically, the others need permission, or struggle to do so, how many really is he out there creating? He doesn't do it for no reason, unless he's feels threatened, which isn't normal. He does it for those he feels are worthy and stand a chance at challenging for one of the 12 moons(before he killed the 6).
Tashio era Japan has between 55-60 million people, a few thousand demons, isn't going to register w/most people b/c most demons aren't going to be killing 100's or 1000's of people, let alone yearly, not even the most voracious. Again most hit their limit quickly, demons don't need to eat to survive.
Even if there were 3000 demons each averaging 120 people a year(overly exaggerated #'s on both sides) that's 250,000 deaths, seems like a large #, but it's only .006, of the population.
To put that in perspective, 460,000 children are reported missing every year in the US, which has a population of 332mil people, that's .001 of the population, and it's not a top major issue in the US.
