  • Along with Look Homeward Angel, Long Time Rider is Steve Young's most obscure and difficult-to-come-by recording. It is also one of the most lyrically adventurous, intimate, and musically minimal and moving albums he's ever committed to tape. Issued in 1990, this is a eight-cut, 45-minute album that deals with acceptance, willingness, and determination to forgive others and yourself, and ultimately to find compassion. While this may seem unlikely territory for one of American music's true outlaws, it is at least as "real" as the inner landscape of the man who wrote "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean" decades ago. A new age cowboy Young is not. "Behold the Stars" is a gorgeous acoustic guitar ballad that looks deeply into eternity as an expression of the moment: "Behold the stars/See how they haunt/The dreams we have behind these bars...." And then there's the devastatingly beautiful "War of Ancient Days," where the song's protagonist goes back to his former wife and adversary and commits to throwing down his sword: "I didn't come here to see who gets the best deal/You can have the stuff I will survive/But I came here to wage war on the poverty/That I see in our eyes/And I'm here to pay the tallest price/For now I'm willing to change my ways/And I'm here to lay the wreath of peace at your feet/And end this war of ancient days." "Have a Laugh" and "My Love" were later recut for the album Switchblades of Love, and these versions are significantly different. Virtually every cut here is an exhortation to inferiority, self-examination, letting go, and expressing the release of that baggage as a real life, hard-won kindness. "Only You" is a song Bruce Springsteen wishes he could have written. It has a loping rock & roll melody directness and an arrangement that makes Young's words come off as love for another accepted as a truth reborn everyday. The album ends with the title track, a blues disguised as a gospel song. Young offers recounts of his alcoholism, his surrender, and his new beginning full of weariness and gratitude. He expresses his willingness to sing for the others who "can't get no lower and they can't get no higher," and a vow to be a "Long Time Rider" if that is what his heart in response to the universe so requests. There are too few recordings that get to this depth, with this kind of attention to detail and honesty. It's simply a masterpiece of ravage and rebirth. This info was taken and shared from google for educational purposes only

@@timothytouhey6505 The CD 'Long Time Rider' is VERY hard to find, it's been out of production for a long time. You might try setting up a search on ebay, both in the USA and in Europe where his music was very popular. Here is a possibility I ran across just now. www.discogs.com/sell/release/7618548?ev=rb

Marianne Menon THANK YOU so very much for posting this track and for the wonderful description and insightful comments about "Long Time Rider" by my brother Steve, they are excellent!! So many of Steve's fans didn't know what to think of most of this CD as it was so different from so much of his other music and writings. It is one of my favorites as well, and every time I listen to it, I'm a bit awestruck by it all over again. There is much brilliance here! Steve will be greatly missed and both myself, Jubal, his son, and other family members have been amazed at the outpouring of comments, stories, music tracks and condolences on FB from many thousands of people from all over the world. We believe Steve would have been pleasantly surprised and pleased. Steve Young will live on.........and I trust that he is rambling down a new and unseen road somewhere with a smile on his face.

Great song. Great performer. Managed to buy this superb album in the 90s. Saw Steve live 3 times in the 1980s and he has always been one of my favourites. Also saw Whiskery Dick several times in the 80s often performing a Steve Young song.
    Thanks for posting Marianne.

Marianne, the photos in this video I believe were from a appearance by Steve on the Nashville Networks, Nashville Now program, with Ralph Emery. I don't remember what songs he sang, but I believe the original videos used to be on here. Does anyone have these on video? He also did a show on the same network, a half hour show, I think it was called New Country. It was a half hour show showcasing artists new music. Last one, his appearance on Bobby Bare and Friends. I know there is a clip on here, but bad quality, and not sure if it is all of his time on there. the RCA 45 Whiskey and the flip side, the song from the closing credits of the film Harlan County War and I also wish someone would download Too Satisfy You, Long Time Rider and Look Homeward Angel. I know that's a lot of requests.

Used to drive Steve Young around to gigs in Michigan for Power Of My Productions and one time we got stuck going to a gig with the Tom Russell Band (when Andy Hardin and Fats Kaplin were in the band) and I got to tape an interview with him. Steve hated doing interviews so it was like pulling teeth except when we got on the subject of "Long Time Rider." Clearly, he felt this was his best work but it was also not easy for him to make this public either. Got the impression there was enough material for a double album and someone said the Jubal and Bear Family Records in Germany are working on a box set of Steve Young material. Given all the record labels Steve Young was on that must be a legal challenge but hope we get to hear the rest of the story on "Long Time Rider" which I get the impression is kind of like Neil Young's "Hitchhiker" in terms of past lives and past life regression (PLR). neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2017/08/tweet-from-neil-young-on-hitchhiker.html
