Today marks the third day of the hearing conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard into the tragic implosion of the Titan submersible, which claimed the lives of five people during its deep-sea expedition to the Titanic wreck.
The day began with Jason Neubauer, chairman of the Marine Board of Investigation, giving his opening remarks. Chairman Neubauer also stated that all witnesses involved in the hearing will be subject to detailed investigation, emphasizing the importance of gathering comprehensive information to uncover the full story behind the Titan disaster.
As the hearing continues on the third day, the first witness, Renata Rojas, a former "mission specialist" for OceanGate, has taken the stand. Her testimony is emotional as she recalls her personal connection to the Titanic and her experience working with the company.
Ms. Rojas began by describing her background and deep connection to the Titanic. She shared that she had been a scuba diver since the age of 12 and had been "obsessed with the Titanic since I was 12." Although her career path initially led her to banking rather than oceanography, she explained that she always sought a way to visit the Titanic. She discovered that non-scientists could participate in expeditions, which led her to sign up for OceanGate.
Before OceanGate, Ms. Rojas had also signed up with Deep Ocean Expeditions, but the expeditions were ultimately cancelled.
When asked about her prior experience with submersibles, Ms. Rojas clarified that she had no prior experience with submersibles before joining OceanGate. However, she had the opportunity to dive to the wreck of the Britannic with another operator.

Exactly. Any private crew mission in US is governed by FAA. The space company's vehicle requires FAA crew mission certification. The rocket and capsule are all certified to be crew mission worthy by FAA. SpaceX has FAA crew mission certification. This is completely different with uncertified Titan sub.

What a joke. It just shows how the world is built on complete BS these days. If someone told me they were a mission specialist on an engineering project, one would assume that they were the creme de la creme of their profession, not a bored bank worker who paid for the title and barely knows a nut from a bolt.

How do you compare Oceangate to Neil Armstrong? The original astronauts had to experiment because they were in a new frontier. Oceangate was not in a new frontier. They simply chose to disregard the industry standards and ignore established science because it was inconvenient and expensive.

Why narrated evidence, just play the actual recording. You can judge more if you hear the witness real voice. The emotion, the emphasis, is all lost in reported speech.

Worse - they have a content match algorithm that will automatically flag and take a video down if it detects copyrighted content. Doing a voiceover from the transcript is just removing one extra excuse they'd have to take this down.
Besides, it's no extra effort. This is an AI voice anyway.

Of course they were smiling and happy to go, Rush lied to them. I'm sure Rush got a thrill from wondering if his sub would implode today, he was a psychopath, he was happy to take the risk. Mission specialist is just another name for a paying guest, a title designed to just get around the law and rules required of taking paying passengers.

I've explained this before on other podcasts and I'm going to explain it again I have been riding carbon fiber and carbon composite mountain bikes for 17 years I live in Oregon I don't know how many bike frames I've been through because carbon fiber does not last most people that race carbon fiber frames will change your frame out at a minimum one a year and sometimes one per race I don't know how many times I've rode my bike in very cold weather brought it in the house and be sitting watching television or whatever I was doing and all of a sudden hear a loud cracking sound and I came to know that it was my frame there was a couple of times at first I didn't know what was making that noise and then I realized it was my carbon fiber frame and that's what happens when they expand and shrink from cold to warm weather carbon fiber has good qualities for a lot of things but it's not perfect especially when it's butted up against metal IE bottom brackets on bicycles and other components Stockton Rush should have been listening to a lot more people and quit thinking he was so smart because a lot of people warned him of the problems that he could face using carbon fiber for what he was doing and he didn't listen to anybody it appears I feel sorry for the people that were conned into going down in that thing it was only a matter of time before it failed
