I am interviewing an application scientist job now. Your video is very helpful. Do you think it is possible to transit to R&D team from application scientist position? Do you know someone did that successfully? Somehow, all my friends told me it is very difficult since R&D and application scientist are very different. I want leave academia and pursue some job in industry. Since I am not very familiar, I want start with application scientist first, then maybe transit to R&D team or do product management. I know it is high possible to transit to product management from application scientist, but I rarely heard some case about transition to R&D. Any information and advices would be very helpful. Thank you so much.

One of the common things in industry is lateral movement. Meaning that people can switch from one department in the same company to another department. However, the lateral movement depends on various factors such as available positions. So, the application scientist position could be a foot-in-the-door position to enter the industry however, the question is why not to start and enter industry with the position you are mostly interested in?!
In addition, you should understand the differences and similarities between R&D and application scientists and the best way is to network and talk with people who are already in these positions.
