Hello, i have an undergraduate degree in biology, and was also required to take courses like organic chemistry and biochemistry as part of my degree requirements. I am very passionate about food and really wish I had known about the whole food science industry when I was in high school so that I could have chosen that as a major a decade ago. Do you have any advice for someone like me to break into the food science industry and be competitive with food science graduates? Thank you

I currently have a B.S. degree in Food and Nutrition and now I am in culinary school at JWU. My dream is to work in food product development but I have no idea where to start. I have kitchen experience but how do I get experience now so when I finish culinary school, I can jump start my career in culinary development?

Hello there! Firstly thank you for taking the time to reach out with question.
You are off to a great start in terms of working towards becoming a product developer. Having an educational background in food science and working towards a culinary degree. I will always say that networking and talking to people is always a good first step in getting a job. Firstly, when you talk to people in your field you can gain insight you might not have ever had. Secondly, if you talk to the right people some one may know of a job.
A good place to start is by joining associations. If you haven’t heard of it I recommend checking out the Research Chefs Association or IFT (International Food Association). Because you are based out of the states I know that there is a North East section where you could reach out and talk to other members.
Alternatively, you could reach out to someone on Linkedin and just ask questions there.
If you are unable to perform an internship or go out to networking events you could share your food knowledge online. This could be by starting a blog or even sharing things through a social media account specially for that. When you give in your resume you could have proof to show your knowledge and it would be fun!
FoodGrads is a platform where you could do all this! I’ll speak from personal experience I helped with FoodGrads for over a year and it helped me get my first job in Quality Assurance. If you have any more questions or are interested in knowing about how FoodGrads can help don’t hesitate to email at veronica@foodgrads.ca
Finally, don’t forget to make a profile on FoodGrads which allows you to make an online account. It is an interactive job board where employers can look at your profile or you can apply for jobs. You never know who might be looking!
