My severe hearing loss prevents me from enjoying all the tones and nuances, but what I heard all of the notes were beautiful. Thank you for posting this video.
Great chords, I’m sure he’ll be fine with almost any speaker. Amp really came alive with the bright cap tweak and the tone knob in a better zone. Great work, SUPER pleasant video.
I've come to a similar conclusion that the speaker is the one thing on a combo amp or speaker cabinet which truly makes a difference in the character of the amp. Thanks for posting videos like this Lyle.
This is a wave of realization that's been going on in the guitar community for the last few years, and I think it's really picked up with the advent of high quality, easily accessible modelling and amp sims that use impulse responses. When you can virtually change out the speaker, and just the speaker, that quickly without losing your mental frame of reference, you realize how drastic of a difference it makes. The thing that changes the sound most is the thing that the sound comes out of. You change that, you change everything
@@LordofDiamondsMetal a side effect of owning an OxBox ... I dig mine more and more each time I use it. Plus it's a great way to audition speakers for a real life swap
it sure does.. i recently built a 5f6a circuit in a 1x12 combo & tried g12m greenback, Alnico blue, CTS, Electro-Voice & and an old G-12H 30W. thankfully, i own all of these speakers so it was convenient. my plan was to try them & purchase one of the correct power handling capability. Surprisingly, i didnt care at all for the alnico blue. the G12h-30, im learning is my fave speaker in anything. i use it in a marshall bluesbreaker combo & prefer it over the blues. based off of these findings i ordered a g12h-75 creamback, hoping it offer the same sonics in an increased power handling speaker. so far, i love it!.. but you are correct about speaker swaps changing the nature of the beast.
I’ve had plenty of BadCat and Matchless amps and the best combination I’ve found is a Celestion Gold/BadCat Celestion V30. So, so good. Covers most genres and all sounds good.
Sometimes that really is the best option. On my Cannabis Rex I absolutely love a Royer 121 and a SM57 on there, I don't really need EQ at that point, just to blend the two mics together; one could achieve similar results by just using two SM57s on different voiced speakers to get the EQ blend.
I’m on the speaker hunt for my Deluxe Reverb once again at the moment. Back and forth between GA SC64 and Vintage30 for the last couple years. Really want to try a Creamback or a Jupiter 12LC. I wish the GA SC64 had a little more top end, and that the V30 was a little less upper mid forward. Have a G12-65 heritage too that just seems a bit too dark and even. I’ll find the right one some day! 😂
I've always liked the woody sound of a greenback but wgs to me has a much more flattering eq response. Never got along with alnico celestions, find the high end trashy for tones I go for.... nice on a clean vox though. Nice comparison Lyle!
Olden silver “Bulldog “ alnicos are a different animal than modern Celestion alnico. 50 years of break in may play a part. Closest modern speaker is the EV Eric Johnson alnico.
Celestion A-type could also be good to round over the brightness for a jazz tone but not be so mid forward, I've been interested to hear one of those smooth cone WGSs you mentioned
Appreciate your channel - can I safely use a 100W L-pad in my DSL20 Marshall combo? I’d like a bit of attenuation available and would like to just mount the L-pad rather than carry around another load box of some sort. Thank you \m/
Well, you know, it’s not everyday you can compare your “63 335” to a real ‘60s 340 with patent number PUs, let alone hear a really great player play each. I wasn’t going to waste the opportunity. PS the SG pickups held up really well. But you can hear that his 340 has heavier strings and higher action, so he wasn’t enjoying the SG.
@@PsionicAudio Do you hear that Psionic Audio? That is the sound of ultimate suffering. My heart made that sound when Wendy's short changed my fry order. The guitarist in black shirt makes that in this video. Just joshing. I never met a guitar player who wasn't interested in checking out the sound of a quality guitar that they didn't already own themselves.
I ran a Spitfire clone into my Eminence EM-12, which is similar to the EV. I was very impressed with the sound. So was the client. He wanted to buy it from me, but it’s my shop speaker. Good luck blowing one up! You could run any tube guitar amp in the world into a single EV12L/EM12 and not blow it.

I feel like this guy spends more time practicing than he does daydreaming about pedals…
Seriously good!

Me too man. 🤣 I just want some sweet jazz licks though

What are pedals?
They are those things under jimis feet that make the cool sounds

That neck pickup sounds amazing. Clear and not woofy at all.

How fun is this. Thanks for sharing 🤙
Love that ES340 tone. Perfect for a sweet jazz tone. Nice demo.
I liked the greenback the best.😊
The blue does it for me. Really nice!
I liked the Celestion AlNiCo Blue best - More tone, less fingering, picking noise, and harsh highs.
Dude needs flats on that archtop. What 's so great about squeaks. Wes didnt squeak.

All of the speakers sounded amazing to me. Yes, there are differences but there didn't seem to be a bad one in the bunch.
I couldn’t decide between the WGS Greenback and the Celestion Alnico Blue with my Bartel Sugarland. I tried both together and bingo. 😊

ES-340’s are great guitars! They’re a hell of a lot cheaper than the 335’s of the day too.
great player!

Love my WGS G12Q’s in my 4x12. They almost doubled in price since I got them.
I have WGS Reapers in 2 amps. They were complete no brainers when they were $75 each. Maybe not so much now.
It's shame WGS no longer offers the Brit Lead.
mesa's C90 at half the price.
But it is Celestion Classic Lead at heart
If a 10" Weber Silver Bell (Alnico) comes up used locally for
I'd love to know what all the books are.
what do those 55hz bass cone speakers sound like? ive never had an opportunity to try one.
'Do me a favor, could you try out these cool guitars' So much arm twisting needed, what a cruel tech.
😂 I was thinking the same

I dunno they all sound pretty similar through my phone speaker. 😅
lol!
You’ll get that with these small jobs!
Stick an EVM 12L in and you get the clearest fattest tone. The blue is nice but the gold at least doesn't blow up and sounds the same.

@@matthewf1979 200watts yes. The celestion blue blows up and melts when you look at it too long though.
You're not going to blow a blue with two EL84's or 6V6's. 15W is very conservative...more like 20W
Gold by no means sounds the same
