I enjoy my Marantz 7706. Used a Denon 6500 with my Monolith 11 before the 7706. Biggest difference for me is the separation within the sound stage. Panning effects within the soundstage is more accurate and responsive. Ambient sound effects are much more noticeable enhancing immersion in a movie. Sounds are just more distinctive. Think of a choir and instead of just hearing the collective singing you can actually distinguish individual voices within the choir. That is how I perceived the upgrade to true separates. You will hear sounds in movies you didn't before. It does take a little while getting used to since your ears are accustomed to hearing a movie a certain way. I do not want to go back ever. Thanks for the overview my man.

My AV7706 has been running since Dec 2020 powered by MM8077 and MM7055 (3 blue portholes - lol) connected with 11 Audioquest Red River XLR cables for my 7.2.4 home theater. All 3 Marantz units are cooled with AC Infinity. Also got the free Marantz SPK618 HDMI adapter kit to resolve the 4K @ 120Hz issue (before the fix) when playing on the PS5. Everything working like a dream on my vertical rack. Channa, thanks for making this video and reminding me why I decided on this setup.
Welcome to the dark side. I had a SR7010 in my theater and upgraded to the AV7705 Back in 2019. I'm using it with Emotiva amps XPA1 x 3, Basx A-300 and Basx A-700 with Klipsch speakers 7.2.4 and 2-SVS PB3k subs. I moved the SR7010 to the FR 5.1.2 system. You will Love it once you get it dialed in. Love your content. Good Luck PM
Nice addition. I had the Marantz SR-6013’s but went separates with the Marantz AV7705’s. I run two systems with the 7705’s. Klipsch 7.4 with the Parasound A-23+ and A-52+ and SVS 7.4 with the Emotivia DR3 and XPA5,G3. The improvement in sound separation and clarity was very noticeable.
I used Denon receivers for a long time and then into Marantz when I went to separates. First, an AV7702 and then an AV7704. I've moved to Anthem now, but Marantz was really great. That 770X level of preamp used to be around $2,000 and now close to $3,000. That's tough, but great units, plenty of features, and solid performance from my time using them. Nice video and love your editing, as usual!
@@rayking507 I don’t even remember. Last Denon I used was over 10ish years ago now. I never used one as a preamp. Just as a full receiver. Then I changed to separated with the 7702 and haven’t looked back.
Thanks for the plug for my remote calibration services! I can't wait to get those Focal's dialed in. Pick up a MiniDSP 2x4HD from Deer Creek Audio when ASAP. We're gonna take those REL's to the next level whether they like it or not! LOL.
The port hole is annoying from a functional standpoint, but great from an aesthetic standpoint. Both are equally important to me if the equipment is going to be visible in a space. The basic rectangle just looks cheap to me, especially when it's off.
Hi Channa! I just picked up a Marantz SR-5015. Not big fan of the portal either! At least you have the flip down panel with a full display. Love all of the connectivity options on that processor. Love those XLR’s. My SR-5015 has seven pre-outs. I am using it as a pre/pro for the 5.1.2 system in our TV room. We have the AV8805 in our home theater. Absolutely love both Marantz units!
Great video and processor! Too rich for my blood but since I had leftover money with Emotiva Emobucks I purchased the Emotiva BasX MC1 and gave it a shot. And I have to say OMG it is soooo good and so much better than my Denon X3700H in pre-amp mode! I didn't expect to hear much difference but just like user: Keeping up with the Jones' said below I experienced all the same things upgrading. For those on a budget I totally recommend the MC1. Not sure why it hasn't been reviewed as much because it has to be the best 13 ch processor for the money. For around $2500 you can have TWO Emotiva Amps and an MC1 for a complete 13 ch setup for less than the cost of the Marantz AV7706.
I'm interested to hear your opinion if seperates with a Preamp Processor/AMP sounds better than using a Receiver/AMP. I saw Youthman's video on this and they noticed a difference....curious if you do as well?
Honestly if you have good speakers that can take advantage of the extra power they will sound better. Also a pre pro will output a better soundstage as well
@@ovlivion81 what evidence that there is more separation. Why would that be the case, if there is little crosstalk on an integrated. I can understand better components for the preamp due to cost. Then again you are running your preamp down cables instead if Intergrated circuits, which I would have thought degrades the signal. So yeah, I am yet to see a real scientific reason why seperates are better with the exact same electronics.
@@nickmaddalena985 they do a pretty good capture of how the seperates give you a different sound stage. True it’s all anecdotal instead of the tech that causes it.
I purchased this processor for running a 9.2 setup using front height speakers. Even though I don't have an atmos setup I think this does a great job for movies and games
Once you try separates , you never go in back to a simple avr receiver , my set up marantz av 8805 pre pro , + 2 marantz mm8077 powered amps, this is the best purchase ever made , it is worth every penny I spend on it
I use the Marantz 7706 in my home theater. I’ve been kicking around the idea of doing a head-to-head comparison with my Onkyo AVR. I’m pretty sure the 7706 will sound better, I’m just curious to hear how MUCH better.
Great review. I picked up a Marantz SR7013 a few years back paired with Definitive Technology BP7001 fronts and BP7002 rears. The Marantz preforms well.
@@TechnoDad Thank you sir. The AV7706 is on another level. I can't keep up! Kidding aside I am impressed with the Marantz's musicality spectrum. Looking forward to watching The Batman tonight on the sound system yo!
@Techno Dad Did they fix the bug with the VRR and Auto low latency yet? Just ordered this beast..hoping I won't regret it. Thanks for the great videos!
Okay okay. Great video. Question though and I've asked Joe this too, Auro surround heights vs rear heights, how big of a difference is that on a sound perspective. Your set up is just like mine, but i have like 5 feet behind the couch. I have 10 ft ceilings and I plan to make custom brackets that screw into the joists and hang bookshelf speakers above my rear surrounds in a 5.1 bed layer. Planning Auro 10.1
@@TechnoDad oh yeah, im a big fan man. I keep up with you guys. What I'm wondering, is there a sound information difference in setting those surround heights you have to surround versus rear in the avr? Kinda like how you did that atmos video on 5.1.2 vs 7.1.4.
I have the Marantz av8805a 2.1 with Yamaha aventage 5200 11 Chanel’s and Marantz mm7025 x two b&w 12inch subwoofers and 6 hight atoms and Kef r all round sounds awesome 7,2.6 and Sony 85inch zh8 👍
I don't hate the port hole. I think it looks cool. BUT, it's so useless, that I need to keep the big door opened all the time. It's not a problem for me, because my 7702 is in a cabinet behind tinted glass doors. The port hole would great if it would display the volume much bigger. I really don't like having an on-screen display because it takes me and my guests out of the experience when I make a minor volume adjustment. I need to make an upgrade because I just moved to a Sony 5000es 4k projector, and the 7702 isn't UHD blu-ray compatible or HDR compatible. I considering the 7706 or a less expensive AVR that has pre-amp outs.
After reading a lot and watching lots of vids I want to make the jump to an AV Processor this is my first video to start looking into it. I like your shirt btw where did you get it?
Hello audiophiles, I own a Marantz AV7706 pre processor which I am still learning about the features it has. I wonder about if an external DAC converter is a good idea to add on to improve the sound of the AV-7706 receiver. Any suggestions or comments based in your current experience is appreciated. Love these learning videos
Hi! I’m not sure if you’ll notice much of a difference with an external DAC, especially if you run a multichannel setup. I think dialing in your room correction might be a better thing to do.
So you don't have to match a pre amp processor with a power amplifier of the same brand? So you can have a Marantz pre amp processor and a emotiva power amplifier
I am on the fence about getting this. I already have all of my speakers (2 towers, 2 rear surround, 2 subs, 1 center channel, 2 front atmos & 2 rear atmos). I may add 2 more atmos in the ceiling later. This looks great but I was also looking at an Emotiva BasX A7. What would you recommend to go with this Marantz?
Hi, I'm considering upgrade to a Pioneer Elite LX505 or a Marantz 7706, I know they're different products but considering that Pioneer has DIRAC Live can be a key decision to save some cash and still have new feature ? DIRAC can give me better sound staging or go with a Separate it's the way to go? (I currently have an AV7005 and it's by far the best thing I've bought for my home theater)
I have the 7705 and I agree with you about the display, but after a while you ignore it. My issue is with the remote. It functions as it should sometimes and other times not so much. Maybe I don't use the system enough to keep it continual. I have 3 separate stereo systems and a complete Bose 900 system and I go back and forth dealing with them. Always liked your videos.
@@TechnoDad I have the Harmony Elite but a lot of time and patience has to used in programming it. It's easier just to use a device's supplied remote so it's just sitting gathering dust.
Im running 5.2.4 with a Denon X3700 AVR in preamp mode with a Basex- A3 and a BaseX A6. I have been thinking about a processor. Would I hear much difference with a processor compared to the Denon?
Quick question I'm about to purchase a processor I'm torn between 2 models. Need your insight. Was looking at the Emotiva XMC 2 ■ Marantz 7706. Want to run 7.6.2. What would recommend ? Thanks great videos like always 😁
Hey Techno Dad, love the channel you’re awesome. Can you possibly review the Trinnov Altitude 32 processor and also their Amplitude amplifiers. That would be awesome if possible. Thank you so much
@@peerguy No I can’t. Could you ! Many RUclips reviewers get demo units from the supplier for free so they can review them and then send them back later. That’s what I meant when I asked if he could possibly review the unit. Techno Dad is awesome and I hope they send him a unit so he can review it. I would like very much to get his opinion.
Got a little question on this device. Is it able to receive an atmos signal digitally, convert it and present it as 7.1 on the analogue outputs? Thanks, I've tried to ask this directly to Marantz but they make it very difficult for me to get in touch with someone who actually has an answer to this.
@@TechnoDad the thing is, it looks like blu rays don’t always get 7.1 or 5.1 tracks anymore. Recently I had to play the latest mission impossible and it only had Atmos or 5.1 descriptive in English. So I was left with a 2.0 analogue output from the Atmos track. We won’t be upgrading to height speakers anytime soon but I want to get a solution that can translate or approximate the Atmos mix on our 7.1 system, if there’s only an Atmos track available.
I just picked up the Marantz AV8805A preamplifier which I will be connecting to a Yamaha Aventage MX-A5000 power amplifier. Should I connect the Oppo UDP-205 directly to the amplifier using the XLR or should I connect it to the preamplifier? I’m not sure which one has better built in DAC’s.
I mean...you could connect the XLR output from the 205 to the stereo XLR input on the 8805a. The XLR input on the 8805a is assignable, so you can route it to whatever input you want. The Oppo 205 has an Ess Sabre DAC with 140 dB of dynamic range. It might be better than the DAC in the Marantz.
I have a Marantz 8805 and absoutely love it. The upgrade from my previous Onkyo integrated amp is beyond words. I agree that the porthole design needs to go, it´s useless. I leave the front open all times to get some usefull info. Since the 8805 I replaced all my speakers except the front L+R to M&K (300 and 150 series) It´s a killer combo. I´m sure You´ll keep the 7706, there´s no turning back now ;-)
@@TechnoDad It´s an awesome setup, I really enjoy it :-) Would You still recommend the M&K 150THX series as front speakers L+R? I watched your review of the 150 series 5.1 system from 2 years back and You were very impressed. Wonder if your oppinion has changed since then since you´ve listened to so much other equipment.
I just purchased this Marantz unit. I went through 2 different used preamp/processors that I bought on ebay & also 1 factory refurbished Rotel pre/pro. The preamp stage in the Rotel is malfunctioning. It's not sending any power to my dedicated power amp. None of my speakers are working except my center channel speaker. I listen to music much more frequently than I watch movies. I'm not into gaming. My question is regarding how this unit performed when you were listening to music in Good ol' stereo? What specifically did you guys like and not like about the way it sounded with the rest of your system? Thanks!
The Pioneer LX505 and Onkyo RZ50 have three HDMI 2.1 ports that will support 4K 120Hz HDR VRR. If you want a Denon/Marantz you’ll have to wait. I still have the Series X connected to the Tv first and then eARC the audio to this AV7706.
Hey Techno D, can you set up for height channels a configuration of top fronts and top middles and a voice of good or the voice of god is available just when you set up the system with front and rear heights? Thanks!
Hi! The 7706 will only process 11 channels but the 8805a - amzn.to/3rv1GFk - will support 13 channels, which would be able to run 7.2.6 Atmos. So I think that's the one you should go with.
Channa, I've got to tell you, I don't think there is any difference in sound quality between this and a Marantz SR 8015 running in pre amp mode and the Marantz AV7706 running on the exact same amps. might be a unpopular opinion, but there is so much snake oil in the home AV market its hard for me to believe a lot of it. I don't even think there's a difference between the Marantz SR 8015 and the Denon X6700h they are the same the Marantz is just fucked with by a golden ear, Still awesome processor enjoy it!
Bro when you gonna do the actual review so we can see what you actually think of this processor and how it compares to the other products like Denon 4700 for example. Love you lots.

I have the 7706 and a monolith 7x with a newbie surround speaker setup. Is there a way to set it up where i can have all speakers like a 2 channel(center speaker being normal) setup for music? So that all my speakers on my right play sound and left speakers play on my left? While being set up for surround, the rear and heights just sit idle. I bought xlr splitters so my preamp front right and front right split to 2 channels each to the amp that are connected to different speakers. That seems to work great and give me what im looking for but id think there has to be a better way
I mean, you could do that with cables going from one side to the other, but have you tried the all channel stereo function? You may have to turn off your height channels to just have the ear levels going. You could set it up this way and set it to a quick select button to access it easily.
Your videos are great very informative! I have a Marantz nr1200 and would like to connect a graphic equalizer to it. Is that possible? If so how. Thanks for your time.
Hi Mike! Thank you so much for watching. EQs are kind of a thing of the past in home situations. If you look online now, EQs are more for pro audio situations and not a whole lot of options for home audio or 2-channel.

Is the term preamp processor one in the same as a typical AVR receiver? Just heard the part there are no amps in this unit. I guess I don’t understand why one would choose something like this instead of a avr with amps. Essentially the same thing minus Apps?
WardoSRT , it is day and night difference When you are using separates, Believe me when I tell you , i’m being owning A separates set up for a couple years now , I have never look back for just a receiver anymore once you hear the difference , anything else sounds inferior
@@2081calin would using a external amp through a preout from a typical avr , provide a similar separation as described? Thank you for the explanation. What you said is on par with the same descriptions for adding a external amp. My problem is I rushed the avr last year and want to make changes the right way. Purchased a Yamaha rx-a2a and failed to realize it doesn’t have enough preouts for L,R,C channels. I changed my front stage twice in the last year and love the svs ultra series. They need more power. Yamaha has me sending the a2a back for hardware hdmi upgrade. I asked them 20 times for a trade in credit. The rx-a4a and a6a have the pre-outs I need. Planning on a big power emotiva amp. Please post a review on all HDMI 2.1 4k 120fps sources(PS5, Xbox Series X, and NVidia RTX 3000 series) for this unit. I have only gotten PS5 to play nice on this unit since it doesn't use the full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. It does not do well with Xbox Series X/Nvidia RTX 3000 series GPU cards on 4k 120fps with HDMI 2.1. The NVidia RTX 3000 source would cut out randomly and black screen over 4k 120fps. I tried using the spk618 adaptor box with the RTX 3000 series source. It would black screen less often, but introduces constant audio sync issues. I went and tried to do a direct connection to my tv with the same HDMI 2.1 cable and no issues. Also, 8k enhanced is set on the receiver options and that didn't help. I contacted support and they keep insisting it's a cable or handshake issue. It seems like they did not fix the HDMI 2.1 bug on this unit. Sound united customer support specialist kept saying it's mostly gamers having these issues. Yeah, that's probably a big % of customers who buy this unit as their center media setup.
Well, I have the PS5 and Series X but I don't have an RTX 3000 series graphics card. I just looked on eBay and the prices are pretty high. The RTX 3080s are around $1200 - $1800. Would the RTX 3060 work? I see them from $800 - $1000.
@@TechnoDad Yes, you can go with a RTX 3060 for testing. The video output needs to be set to 4k 120fps and you should get the same testing results. Enable HDR, 10 bit-depth, and G-Sync as well during your testing. The bug issue doesn't seem like it's resolved on this model and customer service won't admit it. On the RTX 3000 series graphic card you choose to go with, there might be a few HDMI ports, but there are specific ports on the card that is HDMI 2.1, the other HDMI port may be a lower version. Please let us know what are your findings. Looking forward to your next video on a full in-depth review of this unit.

RCA sounds way better than XLR if distance to amps are under 2m and they use XLR in pro setups only because distance are much longer and here RCA do not work. XLR got mores compoment in the signal lines that why it is more expensive not because it sounds better.
Still don’t get the whole cardboard stand. They sell high end and that one being 3k, but it still comes with a cardboard crappy stand. I don’t know how they’re not embarrassed to ship that flimsy poor built cardboard stand with their top of the line Amps and receivers. It’s like shipping a Lambo with with a pine tree air freshener hanging from the mirror.
I kind of agree with that. If they can't supply a proper tripod, they should just not try to send the cardboard one. The Anthem MRX720 I have, which retailed for $2,499 has an actual tripod and calibrated mic. Sometimes I think these companies really just take advantage of us.

It’s Called a Pre-amp/Processor. Yeah, they could add another HDMI 2.1 port but that’s not a huge deal as nothing 8K is coming for a while. With these types of devices, it’s about the sound.
DO YOU USE BLUETOOTH on MARANTZ?? man, I've got myself a AV7705 and really, I just can't understand how folks in 2020s still produce any system WITHOUT a Bluetooth button on it. just a note: the old version AV7705 will NOT (N O T) offer you a BLUETOOTH button on it. So, if ANYTHING wrong happens to your remote control, that signifies = you wont be able to use your MARANTZ / SPEAKERS / BLUETOOTH. a m a z i n g. unbelievable. @@rayking507 I don’t even remember. Last Denon I used was over 10ish years ago now. I never used one as a preamp. Just as a full receiver. Then I changed to separated with the 7702 and haven’t looked back.
@@Techthusiasm Did you try the MRX 740 and how does it compare to the AVM 70 or the Marantz 7704. Many thanks.
Thanks for the plug for my remote calibration services! I can't wait to get those Focal's dialed in. Pick up a MiniDSP 2x4HD from Deer Creek Audio when ASAP. We're gonna take those REL's to the next level whether they like it or not! LOL.
Oh yeah!!!
Nice! Sounds like you have a Marantz family in that house!
Marc A you are so right my man i pickup one of those Mc1 and 2 bassx amp and im blow away.

Hi Mike! I run Surround Heights but in the AVR I tell it they are Rear Heights. This is they only way to get all immersive audio formats.
Woot woot! Sounds like a great setup, Toddy!
Ohh yeah!
Boom!!!
was the difference between your receiver and processor noticeable?
After reading a lot and watching lots of vids I want to make the jump to an AV Processor this is my first video to start looking into it. I like your shirt btw where did you get it?
Hi! I got it online, it popped up on my Facebook feed. It's been years, so I'm not 100% sure where it's from.
Did you keep it..? If so what's your final opinion on this compared to a avr?
That’s correct
I use a Harmony remote, so I won't be using the remote that came with the AV7706.
@@TechnoDad I have the Harmony Elite but a lot of time and patience has to used in programming it. It's easier just to use a device's supplied remote so it's just sitting gathering dust.

@@peerguy No I can’t. Could you !

Techno Dad is awesome and I hope they send him a unit so he can review it. I would like very much to get his opinion.
Is this a DAC as well?
I’m pretty sure if you want 5.1 or 7.1 you select 11.1 and only select the options that add up to 5.1 or 7.1. I feel like my Denon X4700H is the same.
I can agree with that!
Got a little question on this device.
Is it able to receive an atmos signal digitally, convert it and present it as 7.1 on the analogue outputs?
Thanks, I've tried to ask this directly to Marantz but they make it very difficult for me to get in touch with someone who actually has an answer to this.
Hi! It might only be taking the 7.1 mix and not an Atmos mix down.
@@TechnoDad Thanks! I never thought of doing that. I’m going to take care of that right after work tomorrow 😂

I have two high powered gaming machines, but this only has one HDMI 2.1 input. Guess I have to keep waiting for the right processor.

I have the 7706 and a monolith 7x with a newbie surround speaker setup. Is there a way to set it up where i can have all speakers like a 2 channel(center speaker being normal) setup for music?

So now it's an advertisement and that means you received payment and that means your trusted opinion is bought/biased. Come on man!!!
Sorry to burst your bubble, Steve. This was not sent to me by Marantz. It was sent by Dreamedia Home Theater - 0:48 - I did say it again at the end of the video. I also stated that I would keep it if I liked it and in the three months I've had it, I've gotten rid of my Denon X6700H and picked up the AV7706. With all the work I've done making over 700 videos here on RUclips, I have the luxury of trying out equipment before I decided to buy it. That being said, is it a huge imporvement over the AVR, I don't think so. It definitely runs cooler thoough...
Nice vid on an expensive amp.
yea, sorry, but a 3k$ amp and it only has 1 8k hdmi in (Not really future proof) and no amps, sorry, I will have to say not worth it.
Oh, and since it does not have any amps can you call it an amp or should you call it an expensive 4k input switcher.
I'm guessing you are not a glass half full kind of guy?🤣😭

nope, done wasting money on high priced junk.
@@astrogazer1818 you need to do whatever it is that makes you happy.
It’s Called a Pre-amp/Processor. Yeah, they could add another HDMI 2.1 port but that’s not a huge deal as nothing 8K is coming for a while. With these types of devices, it’s about the sound.
You do know the difference between a reciever and a processor right?
you are cool
DO YOU USE BLUETOOTH on MARANTZ?? man, I've got myself a AV7705 and really, I just can't understand how folks in 2020s still produce any system WITHOUT a Bluetooth button on it. just a note: the old version AV7705 will NOT (N O T) offer you a BLUETOOTH button on it. That means if you pair anything to it, it WILL NOT (N O T) recognize your paired (cellphone, etc) automatically. you MUST (M U S T) have the AV7705 remote control and press the Bluetooth button on it; then it will find your paired cellphone (ETC). So, if ANYTHING wrong happens to your remote control, that signifies = you wont be able to use your MARANTZ / SPEAKERS / BLUETOOTH. a m a z i n g. unbelievable. Next time I'd buy anything from Marantz (or any brand) will be first : "does it even has a bluetooth button on it?". DOES THIS AV 7706 have bluetooth button on it (of is it only on the remote control) ???
Hi! I actually have never pressed that button. When my wife wants to play Pandora from her phone, she taps the cast icon in the app and then Airplay & Bluetooth and then selects the Marantz. Then the music plays through the Marantz.
@@TechnoDad well, for whatever reason, my cellphone & Marantz would NOT pair at all (I tried for 2h). I tried everything possible. Marantz would NOT offer any way possible to activate the "Bluetooth". I gave up for that day. But then, everything worked as usual the next day as though nothing happened.
