it's amazing he can still sing these songs, it's amazing anyone could ever sing them, the vocals dont sound hard but theyre actually so high virtually no male singer can sing them, it takes a special voice.
I saw them at Panama City Beach in the late 90s. Just before the concert began, my then-wife and I leaned on a deck rail waiting for the concert to start and noticed them preparing to come on stage from a lower level. Don Barnes looked up as I was looking down. I smiled and casually waved. He smiled and casually waved. The rest of the band smiled and casually waved. It was just a funny, nonchalant moment. They rocked that night. One of the most fun concerts that I ever attended.
This concert ROCKED! What a wall to wall lineup of hits! I love that the band was out there shaking hands, giving high fives and taking pictures afterwards. Don Barnes stayed out a little longer and gave some additional love to fans. He is truly a great human being! Love seeing that he is still out there ROCKING your face off after 50+ years.
I've seen these guys live way back in the 90's and they still have that sweet rock and roll drive! Like a punch you never forget! Incredible! Jam on boys!

In 2021, Journey featured two drummers for a month. The progressive rock band Yes, featured two drummers for one tour, while Alan White was injured. Two drummers, give the back-back & fills, so much more depth.

Don Barnes kicked ass in the eighties. Great guitar player, great voice, and doing all he could with Van Zandt. Those 3 albums Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, Special Forces, & Tour De Force were friggen great. Good to see him again. Personally, they're my favorite Southern Rock band.
I took my son to see them at MPAC in New Jersey . . . he thought . . . going to see some old timers band . . . he was blown away . . . they were tight, high energy, played hit after hit and even an amazing Chicago cover . . . STILL a GREAT BAND!!!!!!!
I have to disagree with Van Z comment.... I saw them 5 times when he was with them.... he had the name and ran around on stage with a top hat but IMO didn't add much.... they guys ROCK.... thanks to DB for keeping the memories alive!
I was able to go see them at the beginning of their tour here in Austin Texas a few months back out doors at Bucks Back Yard and I tell you even without VanZant they still can rock the stage like old 38 Special did back in their hey day!!
Saw them twice back in the 80’s at Universal Amphitheater and at Long Beach Arena(with Bad Company). They were in their prime back then and were one of the best. I guess that’s how I want to remember them. Don’s voice just isn’t the same now, but no one’s is after 40+ yrs of singing R&R. It’s great to see he’s still out there having fun!👍🏻
Riggs, what an incredible album. Jerry Riggs is a great guitar player, lead vocalist, and songwriter. There's no way for him to show all of what he's got in a band like this. But, it's still a good band for him.
I know Jerry Riggs, he is from where I live in Knoxville. He is a great player. He easily fit into Pat Traver's Band. He also fits very well. I prefer Jeff Carlisi because I like his playing and he wrote all the big hits.
Yes they were a great band and still sound amazing. As long as Don Harmes is still running the show with his INCREDIBLY gifted voice I will continue to see them live, I don't care who else is in his band. They're quality musicians, guarantee that. Once Don exits any replacements to him are phonys, then they're officially a tribute band.

Yes, but many of the original members I read have retired or maybe even dead 🤔 At least Don Barnes is still with the band. I'd have NO interest in seeing them without Don, hes the bread and butter. With him leading the way they look and sound GREAT and still play with tons of passion and I will pay to see them. I saw them 2 summers ago in STL and they were VERY VERY VERY good. I had chills watching them sing Hold on Loosely 😎
I'd absolutely lose my mind as the intro to "If I'd Been The One" (my favorite since childhood & that fiercely cool video) kicks up. Apparently I'm not the only one...you go guy belting it out to the top of your lungs. It's not a church service & if they didn't want us to sing they shouldn't have played the best song ever😂❤

IIBTO is my favorite 38S song because my high school sweetheart won me back with that song. 💕 I was afraid that they may not do it, so when I heard the first few notes, I got so emotional. It strained Don's voice, because it is a difficult song to sing, but I loved it!! I think he may have gotten emotional, as well, because he then told us that his wife with us. 💕
Loved them this year (2023) in St Charles, IL. Sounded fantastic - just like they did in the 80's when I discovered them. I would see them every time they come to my area. Don just keeps rocking!

They ruled back then w/Donnie Van Zant, Barnes, Jeff Carlisi, dual drummers Jack Grondin-Stevie Brookins and the late great bassist Larry Junstrom. Lost interest in 87 when Don Barnes quit and they turned their backs on Southern Rock music for MTV Pop friendly type of music. Don Barnes wanted no part of it when he quit, only to return by 1993.

First concert i saw, 1981 at the kansas collisium in wichita. They were the warmup band for grace slick n jefferson starship! Will be at bonner this sat too with kansas. 6 of us going, cant wait.
Unfortunately I never saw them live but I remember driving around listening to Wild Eyes Southern Boys in my 69 Plymouth. That was back in 1987. Many good times.
I'm surprised nobody on here mentioned one of the high points in the 38 Special career when they played Arrowhead Stadium as part of Summerjam '82 with Foreigner, Loverboy, Triumph and LeRoux.
I forgot about LeRoux! It was around '82 or '83 I saw them open for Cheap Trick. Funny, the last time I saw .38 Special they were playing with Cheap Trick as well. Great music.
.38 Special in (1986), had a completely different lineup. They had Donnie Van Zant (vocals and guitar), Jeff Carlisi, (lead guitar) Jack Grondin, Steve Brookins (drummers), Don Barns (lead singer & guitar), Larry Junstrom (Bass), keyboards by (studio player), and two backup singers. That is the .38 Special I want to see. I saw them in Illinois in (1986) with Honeymoon Suite. As reporter, I interview the entire band in 2003, in Orange County, for Los Angeles rock station (93.1 The Arrow) for their rock concert. .38 Special were the most generous, and insightful interview on that bill. Don Barns gave a direct path to their past and was open to doing more deeper interviews. Which he did. .38 Special had many different lineups, and when Max Carl took over, Don Barns was equally detailed on what had happened during that time. Don Barns would return and take over the operations of the band. Currently, this is Don Barns band, and they are playing at a level.
.38 Special Strength in Numbers tour with some upstarts out of New Jersey's Bon Jovi while they were waiting on their slippery when wet stage to be built.
The're playing and singing well here it's Don's band nowadays and it sounds good still I would see them if they come to Tulsa again they come every year or two
I have always thought that .38 Special were GROSSLY underrated. It was the combo of Barnes and Carlisi, Jundstrum and the two drummers that made that band. This was one of my favorite bands back in the day because of their vocals and strong guitar play. There are certain bands where you can’t just replace the lead vocalist. Van Zandt was one of those singers; Lou Gramm, Steve Perry Steven Tyler also come to mind. They are their respective bands. This band has overmiked the guitars and drums to hide their lack of vocals. This is 38 NOTHING SPECIAL. I have my CD s and LPs to remind me of how they did sound!!!!
Uh sir DB and carlisi are 38!!!! DVZ's last name was a draw because of his amazing songwriter brother but every hit song you heard was wrote by DB and JP of survivor! Like the songs DVZ is on are the hokey ones and roughousing and wild eyed DB carried the weight so irreplacable DVZ more like dont replace whats not nessescary
Idk maybe im wrong but i always felt like this was one of the last southern rock style bands still making music an helped transition us to the big hair bands from the early mid eighties,with the Skynard plane crash in 77 an the disco boom,southern rock an rock in general didnt get much air play til about 83 when the California rock style got hott til about 91 lol im jus rattling on lmao 38 special gives ya that good ol rock style,very talented band

Jeff Carlisi left a long time ago. He tried to become a race car driver. Donnie Van Zandt retired because he has hearing loss.

This was one of my favorite bands back in the day because of their vocals and strong guitar play. There are certain bands where you can’t just replace the lead vocalist. Van Zandt was one of those singers; Lou Gramm, Steve Perry Steven Tyler also come to mind. They are their respective bands. This band has overmiked the guitars and drums to hide their lack of vocals. This is 38 NOTHING SPECIAL. I have my CD s and LPs to remind me of how they did sound!!!!
you do realize Don Barnes is almost 70 years old. of course they don't sound as good as they once did but still pretty damn good.

Everybody from that era is about that age and it wasn’t so much a knock on Barnes but the point was Van Zandt is irreplaceable
I wouldn't doubt that Jerry Riggs is the best guitar that's ever been in this band.
Uh sir DB and carlisi are 38!!!! DVZ's last name was a draw because of his amazing songwriter brother but every hit song you heard was wrote by DB and JP of survivor! Like the songs DVZ is on are the hokey ones and roughousing and wild eyed DB carried the weight so irreplacable DVZ more like dont replace whats not nessescary
Donnie van zandt was easily replaced in 38 special...he rarely sang and his guitar work wasn't needed with Barnes and Carlisle on guitars...
Idk maybe im wrong but i always felt like this was one of the last southern rock style bands still making music an helped transition us to the big hair bands from the early mid eighties,with the Skynard plane crash in 77 an the disco boom,southern rock an rock in general didnt get much air play til about 83 when the California rock style got hott til about 91 lol im jus rattling on lmao 38 special gives ya that good ol rock style,very talented band
Love me some 38. Whole not my favorite album of theirs, I do like A heart needs a second chance.

Yeah sad he is almost deaf now and can no longer preform...good on Don for keeping the dream alive just like skynard only having 1 og member and Johnnie left but keeping the music and memories alive
@@bluarcher4424 Skynyrd don't have any original members left. Since Gary Rossington died they're just a cover band at best. Most likely still worth listening to though.
