  • Indonesia currently hosts around 14,000 refugees. Some of these refugees have been waiting for 6-7 years while being completely isolated and marginalized in Indonesia. Asian Boss recently had the opportunity to speak with some local residents in Jakarta about this issue and actually step inside the government complex that accommodates these refugees. Here is how it all went down.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.

Refugees need help and helping hand, that's true.
But Indonesia just a *transit country* for the refugees
Their aim was and still is other more wealth country such as Australia.
From the local news, I learnt that stranded refugees in Indonesia are those who's being rejected to enter Australia. There fore Indonesian government is kind enough to provide them shelter, eventhough it's just a temporary ones.
For those of you who live outside Indonesia and don't know about Indonesia, here are some facts. Indonesia consists more than 15,000 islands and therefore the country development is still eloping day by day, and there's much more rural areas where the people facing more difficulties everyday, even just to have proper meal twice a day.
I'm not trying to justify that refugees are bad and government always right. The government still have lots to improve in their own works on developing their own country, while being so, they just practice humanity and tries not to make inequality to their own citizens.
So, I'm actually still in between. For example, if the government only able to give that much help out of humanity and empaty, would it be unfair if the refugees still complains?
How about the country the refugees willing to entry, such as Australia? Will they also want to accept *all* of the refugees?

Indonesia is just a transit country. What facilities do you expect? Moreover jakarta is a most populated city in indonesia. And we already have so much problems. At least they can eat freely have place to sleep while waiting for third country than living in their conflicted country that can risk their own life.

Because a few years ago they stopped by at my city and most of them don't want to live the hard way. There were some of them that we helped because we pity them, but then they came back and demanded more in a pressuring way. The things they demand were also unreasonable, such as bicycle, new clothings, etc. And when they were not given those, they acted up instead. The research results are Indonesia was not signature country of Geneva Convention 1951 about Status Refugees, so Indonesia doesn't need to give them Refugees status.

That’s right and these refugees know where Indonesia stands with regards to protecting refugees and international law. The issue is that countries like Australia has abandoned Indonesia to deal with their mess when they stopped or reduced funding UNHCR and IOM and resettlement intake. No one expect Indonesia to carry this burden but to push Australia to fulfill their obligations under the international law and accept them to Australia.

As a human, my heart goes for them. However, I understand this is a complicated situation. These immigrants got stranded in Indonesia because they are rejected by Australia or still waiting their permit to enter The Down Under. Many Indonesians feel these immigrants are being ungrateful to Indonesia (like badmouthing the country and even held a protest against the government) while the government have provided them a place to stay while they are “not obligated” to do so. The local citizens tried to help, like setting up donation boxes for them. However, some said that personal helps are useless because these immigrants keep demanding more and more from them.

As an Indonesian I'd rather the government stop accepting refugees. Sorry not sorry but we're not exactly a rich country either. Those mega rich countries in middle east should be held accountable. They are practically neighbors and yet they don't help them at all. Furthermore, as mentioned by others, the refugees aren't exactly grateful either for the help they've received for FREE. I'm not saying all refugees are bad, but being 'nice' doesn't always work in the big scale. Me,im open for accepting refugees, ACTUAL REFUGEE, not some people claiming to be refugee just to take advantage of their host country welfare system. Country should help their citizen first then other people, if that country cant fully help their citizen why they should help people coming to their country most of the time illegally to boot.
This is why i think more country should adopt Japan's policy on refugee, they're checking wheter those people applying for refugee status are actually refugees or just economic migrant who will leech into their welfare system. Yes that'll take a long time but it'll guarantee (most of the time) that the refugees they're accepting are actual refugees.
Also Indonesia isnt a destination country, we dont ratify refugee treaty. We're not oblige to provide them anything, yet we providing them with anything they need. I've met with some of refugees back then (with G-men) to negotiate their living condition here, we offered that they will live in Kalimantan/Sulawesi countryside with around 1-2 Hectare of lands and some amount of money for living expenses until those land can provide them with crops that they can eat and sell for money (the assistance will be cut after 1 year). It's a good deal i tell you, yet they dont want to it, they just want welfare.

@@sweetestbee So is a lot Europe, including my country the Netherlands{Ironic in a video about Indonesia.} my country is the most densely populated country in Europe only global countries like South Korea, India and Bangladesh are comparable in terms of Population density, you can literally walk any direction here and end up in a village or town within 10 to 20 minutes.
The government actually supported massive emigration in the 60's and 70's because of the population boom, essentially my country would already be densely populated if it had somewhere in the area of Max 7 to 9 Million people, it is currently on track to have 18 Million people.
At this point it has wreaked havoc on what little nature we have left and the largest cities are expanding so much they are basically meeting and starting to form one gigantic blob of a city.
As for Migration we generally keep an open mind about it and allow Immigration but problems keep flaring up to the extend where parties specifically against Immigration are rapidly growing, my point is moral feelings are one thing, the reality of a lot of immigration is another thing, especially when a lot of migration happens and people are not integrated well as a result, also it is extremely hard to filter actual refugees from economic migrants, as an example during the Syrian refugee Crisis it became apparent only about 30% of people of people coming in were actually refugees and the rest were economic migrants taking advantage of the situation.
Also while it may sound logical rich countries take in a load of people, there is a massive problem here as well, not even adding the fact that crimes have spiked as a result of migration, but a major problem is education, the overwhelming majority of people entering end up on government welfare, healthcare and government housing{We already have a housing crisis and welfare and healthcare are rapidly becoming unaffordable} because they are not at all educated, barely educated or educated in an acceptable sense for their home country which generally is not enough in my country, resulting in them permanently staying on welfare or having to be re-educated which takes multiple years even if they do their best which is not often the case either.
My point is there is no easy fix for Migration, the only realistic long term fix is stabilizing countries of origin and creating opportunities, but then the inevitable question arises, who is responsible for this? I mean is it fair to ask stable countries to toss a load of money at other countries which don't function and likely wont function in the future?

    Hi all!
As someone who lives nearby this area I do have mixed feelings at first when I saw them. Only until I knew some of them in personal level that I’ve come to understand their circumstances.
Every refugees that come to Indonesia are not allowed to work at all. Even if they did, they will be sent back to their country. Even the children are not allowed to get education as well.
There are other cities in Indonesia other than Jakarta where they are sent too and they never have a choice which city they can be sent too.
All of them only wish to be sent to the next country as soon as possible in peace but in reality they need to wait roughly around 4-5 years until they are sent to next country and are forced to stay in host country (ex: Indonesia) without permit to find job or education.
After befriending them, I realise most of them harbour no hard feeling about Indonesia. It just that they are not given the rights to find their own living so most of them are feeling helpless about their situation.
I believe the easiest thing we can do are to give them our trust that they do not come as criminal but rather as normal people who are looking for better place to live without being life-threatened.

The thing is though, that it sounds like Indonesia doesn't even need to give them shelter but yet they did accommodate them (not a perfect place or a single home) but they are accommodated. Here though, in the U.S. the refugees that are trying to cross a boarder or cross it are literally put in a Cage, with silver blankets, no shower in days. I know it may sound a little harsh but they should be appreciative because they were able to at least leave the country that took so much from them.

They blame Indonesia for not giving them a luxury life. They seems to forget that Indonesia was only their transit country. Yet Australia, Their destination delay and doesn't want them to enter. And still Indonesia is on the blame for all of this situation. My country isn't that rich. Majority of our people living with minimum wage and poverty still our no 1 problem, So much for Indonesia to handle. These refugees are so ungrateful. Hopefully Australia will accept them soon. From what I watched, most of the interviewed (if not all) didn't understand about this refugee thing. They just heard about it from social medias and some rumours, and made their own assumptions. For example that guy who said he felt threatened because they might steal his job. This guy is probably one of those men shouting "Aseng! Aseng!" (a slang for aliens/non Indonesian) when he saw a Chinese Indonesian with better living condition than him. Also that blurred girl, she's most likely the superficial type that judge everyone based on their appearance yet she claimed "I don't want to judge". These refugees are not here to stay, they're stranded here while waiting for permission to enter their actual destination.
I'd love it if Asian Boss actually interviewed someone with knowledge on this issue, someone who could express their opinions in neutral way and maybe asked them what they think the UN should do, why Indonesia have to take care of them and why they think Australia (or wherever they wanted to go) is delaying their plan.

They didn't use what they steal for drugs or entertainment unlike the begal out there, they didn't steal because they want to - they have to in order to survive. They survived the war in their country not to starve to death here. The question should be, how can we help; what the UN, Indonesia and Australia should do.

You asked what they contribute to us, but have you ever asked how our Indonesian people who migrated and Indonesian refugee being treated out there? Yes, they do exist, there's a lot of us Indonesian who fled from Indonesia because of unfortunate events and treated as bad as these refugees.

People need to help refugee. But there are a lot of people who are just showed up in the border without legal documents and screaming for asylum. At the end of the day these people are just a mere economic migrant exploiting the privilege of refugee status. It burdens the country which hosts them and it hurts the real refugees who are really threatened and really need help from international community.

They need help from richer countries, which currently are not willing to lend help. Please view this issue in a wider perspective and stop putting the blame on Indonesia. i compliment w refugee but then again i also need to look out for my country..we r not the 1stworld country whr ppl hv good jobs n everything..ppl say they don't feel threatened because they can't work thr..the truth is...the govn dont really come clean w this..in my country also lot of ppl foreigners open up stalls n hinder the working opportunity for the locals..govern didnt take any action against this. i can completely understand the locals concern.

its not as easy as u say guys. Indonesia is only a transit country for those refugees. Indonesia did not trow their ships away to the sea, we accept them here, but they should be realized that Australia ignored them of coming to their land. Its complicated tho, they do not want to return to their homeland because of war. if any of you guys from a better country, you might want bring them to ur country and giving them the job.

See, there’s broadly two justified sides to the issue. Should we relent to the refugees, who are war-torn and displaced and fragile, or insist on our well-being, because their influx infringes on our work? A country is meant to serve its people, but till what time can it accept other people as its people too? It’s honestly really morally perplexing, because you can’t argue that either side is totally wrong.

Truth is we can't prosper while our neighbors suffer. Conflict areas invite more conflict because the more desperate people get, the more desperate things they're willing to do. Many of these lands are rich in natural resources, and the trouble makes them ripe for exploitation of those resources. Our world is so interconnected now. My neighbor's well-being is my well-being.

scarletglitter That’s not a truth, it’s an opinion. It may be truth to you, but I could easily argue that I can’t contribute to my neighbour’s welfare before I can do my own. Everything’s not black and white.

      @ritiaggarwal995 5 лет назад

scarletglitter l and there’s also the fact that many of these conflict areas don’t invite invaders. In fact, in many of these areas, the violence is inflicted by those within. Internal and political unrest cannot be withstood by many refugees, rather than an external colonisation. Frankly there’s not been many colonisations ever since the British Empire crumbled, although there have been a few.

Mau bantu dengan pulangkan mereka ke negara asalnya; nanti malah dibunuh gara2 ada konflik negara. Disediakan tempat penampungan, dan blabla sebagainya but, hey!
Tapi karena most of Indonesian itu punya rasa kasihan.... Jadi serba salah. Ga ditolong nanti auto masuk neraka.
