We used to fish the whirlpool 25 years ago. It was unbelievable fishing. I could never walk up that escarpment now. Many times I thought my heart was going to pop out of my chest climbing back up. Got a lot of trout and salon down there. Was always worth it. Gorgeous place to spend time.
The walk back is definitely tiring especially during a hot summer day. The Niagara is amazing, so much multi species potential, even if you get skunked it’s always a nice hike. Thank you for watching, Cheers!
If you are ever considering releasing a steel head, try to refrain from taking it out of the water at all. They are not Hardy once they remove. No issue with keeping. Ive lesrned the hard way
@@mattspence2059 yeah I know all about the tourist aspect. Its so much nicer fishing here early spring or in the fall when our backcountry fishing spots aren't full of vehicles with Wisconsin or Florida license plates lol.
Ay bud what do you typically run for smallies in the whirlpool, was thinking of trying swimbaits and tubes but not sure what weight i should be running with the insane current
That’s unreal steelhead trout in July very rare I know they are cold water fish you’d think it would just be bass and sheeephead but still a great catch
@@mattspence2059 I know on the lower river on the American side by the Lewiston Queenston bridge they’ve been catching smallmouths and silver bass from shore
Hey Matt, just stumbled upon the channel. Beautiful fish man! What time of year did you catch this? I’m thinking of trying the Niagara River in August but not sure how active it will be then. Cheers man
Hey thanks for watching! I caught this steelhead last year on July which really surprised me. If you’re going in august you could probably catch some decent small mouth bass, Cheers!
So nice to have the steps like that on that side. I know it's still a hike there but at least it's safe. Caught a toe on one of the rock steps on the US side last year and almost went over the edge. Great catch!
Of course it died, it was out of the water longer than when you fought it. Look up delayed mortality. Great video dude but you could stand to employ better fish handling practices… and so could almost every other person posting fish vids.
Yeah I could have handled it much better to ensure its survival. It did not go to waste though. I will try and promote better fish handling in the future. Thanks for watching.

Always a great time fishing there, that hike is brutal and will definitely tire you out fast.
Right on man, if we’re going to promote our fishery, then we have to promote its care. Glad the fish wasn’t wasted!
Nice ! Never been. Might give it a try. Thank you for sharing.
What a surprise. Beautiful steelhead my friend. Niagara is a beautiful place, except the walk back to the car. Really enjoyed the video.

Yeah your right, I usually try and leave the fish in the water as much as possible if releasing. Thanks for watching.
Nice fish and entertaining video 👍 thanks .
Beautiful steelhead... i always wanted to fish it...
That's unreal! A steelhead in July on the Niagara river. I guess the river temps have stayed a little cooler this year.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking caught me completely off guard.
You nailed that video.👍👍👍
Always wanted to try Niagra River. Such a beautiful location and multispecies potential. You never know what you'll catch
Yeah it’s really beautiful apart from being a very busy tourist destination. You really never know what you’ll get here and that’s the exciting part.

Nice fish sir, Hi how do we access this from the top? Or is this the US side of things.
@@jeremydelarosa7605 it’s the Canadian side.
If the hike back up is anything like the US side then I bet you had a fun time carrying that fish back up hahaha, good catch man 😎
Hahaha it was not fun plus it was crazy hot that day by the time I headed back to my car I was done for the day lol, cheers!
Nice video. But that's not the whirlpool, it's Cripp's Eddy. I know my whirlpools and Eddy's, lol.
4:30 oh, ok, that's the whirlpool
Early for a bow ... nice fish
. Gotta love those stairs I race my kids and his friends up lol .. they are 20 I'm 46
Yeah it was super cool to get one this time of year!
@@mattspence2059 the thunder mist guy on RUclips vaught one in june as well
I love that place gorge !!
This was enjoyable to watch as it is 15 minutes away from me
Best bank fishing in USA on the Niagara especially in the fall with the colors.
Love the Niagara this time of here, went a couple weeks ago, should have the footage posted soon!
Where are those stairs at ? Looks like a great place to walk
Ay bud what do you typically run for smallies in the whirlpool, was thinking of trying swimbaits and tubes but not sure what weight i should be running with the insane current
Heavier spoons and spinners tend to work really well for me there.
I caught 14kg Carp in 2019 whirlpool, beautiful place

Yeah it was definitely surprising I was expecting maybe some small mouth bass but this was rare for this time a year for sure

@@daveschmidt1601 ah cool! Have never caught a silver bass before.
@@mattspence2059 I’ve never caught one either but they are like miniature striped bass expect they only get to be around 2 pounds
Nice catch!!
Thanks!
We’re you using a spoon what specifically did u have set up
I was just using a paddle tail swim bait with a heavier jig head, I was primary going for bass.

Which trail entrance is this?
The Niagara Glen
Any tips for lures, parking, or access? Thinking of going this weekend hoping it’s not crazy this early in the year!
I found that using spoons like little cleos can be pretty effective as well as soft plastics that mimic gobbies. Good luck!
My friend can you yell me the location how can i get there. Very nice place
This is on the Canadian side. Navigate to "Niagara Glen"...they have those metal stairs that lead down the gorge toward the river side.
So nice to have the steps like that on that side. I know it's still a hike there but at least it's safe. Caught a toe on one of the rock steps on the US side last year and almost went over the edge. Great catch!
Thanks! Yeah without the steps I think I would pass out lol Definitely have to watch your footing or you will end up tumbling down.
How can I get to those stairs? I live here in ontario
There should be a parking lot just off the road along the visitors centre, the stairs are a short walk from there.
I’m gonna fish there today
July?!
Yes!
@@mattspence2059 incredible-how deep were you running?
@@Nobody-c6gdon’t remember, but I was using a paddle tale.
Where the heck are those stairs lol?? Are they on the American side?
Canadian Side
Big bro was fishing for isonade😭
Very nice
At least rainbow trout is one of the best eating fish there is. So no release but great catch and lots of quality meat!
Yeah it was quite the treat!
The state should install an elevator.
Can u please tell me where about in Niagara is that location at ? Please and Thnks
Its the Niagara Whirlpool.
Are these the stairs by the power authority fishing Pier
This is on the Canadian side my friend
The gorge has plenty fish .
Damn it's the Canadian side?
Yes sir
It's probably cuz you handled it like a bass....never the less amazing catch 😂
Yeah looking back now I could have handled it better for sure, thanks for watching! 🎣
This isnt the whirlpool
Your downstream from the pool

Pretty cool but the only problem is you suck as a cameraman.😢😢😢😢
Fair enough, getting better with time.
