I use my d5500 on professional work and the image quality will not disappoint you, it produce very beautiful and sharp images, its my all around carry camera wherever i go and pit my d750 on my bag :)) its light witha 35mm 1.8
I don't know exactly what you mean by removing focus from shutter release (at 5:38), but Nikon D5000 series cameras traditionally have a Custom Menu Settings (F2) by which the AE-L/ AF-L button can be programmed to be a AF-ON button which frees the shutter button of its focusing duties!! Great video as always!! I'm revisiting this one as I'm hoping to add a D5500 as a light-weight second body to my trusty old Nikon D7000!! Hope it will be a good choice for me!!!
Thanks, yes, I was looking for something that didn't need to be found. On most cameras both steps are necessary (i.e. first enable a button to back focus and second remove focus from the shutter press). I've since learned that Nikon accomplishes that with a single step.
Thank you for the field test and review of the Nikon D5500. I ordered one this morning and will have it in my hands on Wednesday, which is my birthday. I watched your review and a couple others which helped me in making my decision. I appreciate all you do in teaching us about the products out there. Keep up the great work!!!
I have to say Maarten, your review is wonderfully comprehensive - I already owned my D5500 but some of your video revealed new or forgotten features. I look forward to more reviews from you.
Outstanding review! I just bought a D5500, upgrading from an old Canon XTi. Cameras sure have changed since I got the Canon 7 or 8 years ago! Thank you for such an informative review, sir!
This is an excellent review of this Nikon D5500. I really found it very informative and compact with necessary information. Love it. I wish to have a review of Canon 750D from you very soon.
Thank you very much for the kind words, I appreciate your comment. I have reviewed the 760D (ruclips.net/video/xJQuLZSOe5I/видео.html) and I think my next Canon will be the 80D.
This video is really helpful. I bought this camera today. I tell you, it is super light and yet powerful! I loved the conclusion of the video. This is my first DSLR and I think I have chosen the right camera.
Wonderful review and explanation on the camera's various features. Even when it's per say a camera I'm not in the market for it's still great to hear your opinion on it. Thank you.
if you dont mind sir, maybe you can do a review of x-t1 and a6300, how great they are when it comes to the quality of taking pictures and video as well. thanks a lot and more power to you.
Thanks for taking the time to reply! If possible could you help me decide between the D3400 and D5500? The packages I am looking at include both the kit lens (18-55mm) and an additional 70-300mm lens along with some other goodies, that being said the the price difference between the two are CAD$80, which one would you recommend? :)
Probably the D5500 - but I'd let both of those lenses go and bargain for a better one. Watch this video I did about DX lenses: ruclips.net/video/Rbn1PQ3irPc/видео.html
If you're having trouble deciding, I'd always recommend the less expensive one, but not if you'll feel inferior and the perceived wallet impact is the same for you.
Glad you reviewed this camera. Was wondering why you did not review it last year. I purchased this a couple off months ago as my first DSLR. It is the fist off many DSLR camera's I intend to collect for the next 8 years. Enjoy as I use it for street photography in London United Kingdom.
Here are my reviews of the D750: ruclips.net/video/uxZ4XVH6KXE/видео.html and the 760D ruclips.net/video/xJQuLZSOe5I/видео.html. I plan to review the D500 later this summer.
+Maarten Heilbron I have seen both reviews and I like both these Canon Cameras. Might even get both. Anyhow I also intend to purchase the Sony A6300 and the Nikon D500.
Hmmm ... let's see. About the same on many aspects, so first - does one have a feature you'd really like that the other doesn't? Does one fit your wallet better? Does one fit your hand better? Does one brand appeal to you more? Then, finally, make sure to check with your heart. You should love the camera, so that you always want to take it with you. Hope this helps.
Thank you. I have been wanting to know which Len's I can change the aperture with in live mode. You are the only person to tell us this out of all the videos I have watched on RUclips. Great video. I subscribed. Looking forward to more videos. Peace Love GOD Bless
Maarten, you’re such a professional that I just want to buy everything you review (LOL), but i'll keep the one I got based on your review, the Sony A7-MK2, I got it about a year ago and I couldn’t be happier. Thank you for sharing. Rick.
Thanks for the kind words. You should be happy with the A7 - I don't think there's anything here (other than Nikon's lenses) which would be an improvement.
Really well done Maarten. I agree with your comment below that the Sony a6000 is a great value, but I still think this camera is, feature for feature, a better one. And only Nikon and Canon can offer a huge array of lens choices (theirs and others) if you decide later to expand beyond the one provided in a kit. I bought my D5500 body only, and added the Sigma 17-55 f/2.8, and I couldn't be happier. I too find myself frequently saying, "Wow, that's a really nice picture!"
Thanks for the kind words. For the price point, there's no beating the A6000, but in spite of my mirrorless bias, I agree - the D5500 is an excellent camera that reliably delivers satisfying results.
Well, we'll just agree to disagree on that! And while neither of these cameras has 4K video, I doubt that more than 1 or 2 percent of all camera buyers really need it, especially if they understood before hand that it requires an expensive PC to properly edit and render those gigantic files. To me it's more of a sales gimmick.
Wow, I thought we were agreeing to agree! But for 4K, I will both agree and disagree - it can be a very valuable film-making tool. Not only because it enables me to zoom and recompose in post, but because in general, I find the quality of down-rezzed 4K to be superior to HD. And your next TV will be 4K. The real reason not to get it now is that ITU/REC 2020 (the 4K colour and dynamic range standard) isn't yet fully implemented either on cameras or TV sets. However, you're absolutely correct - fast PC and mega-gigs of external drive space or you'll end in absolute frustration.
Certainly you're one of the 1 to 2 percent I mentioned above, I just don't believe the other 98 or 99 percent of people will ever take advantage of it, since they don't do video post-production, and mainly view their results on low-res PCs. My point being, why pay for something you won't use? Also, though I'm no engineer, it seems to me we're starting to bump up against the laws of physics (excessive heat, battery life issues, quality control, etc.) with all of these processor intensive features in such small packages.
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. Nikon has so (too?) many lenses ... I really enjoyed the DX 16-80 I featured in the review. For a larger perspective (they've tried and analyzed more lenses and reviews) I rely on wirecutter. thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-first-nikon-lenses-you-should-buy/
Maarten, To clarify, you said "there's no setting to remove focus from the shutter release." This is incorrect. In the menu there is a setting to assign the AE-L/AF-L button. Change this setting to 'AF On' and it will remove the focus from the shutter release and assign it to the AE-L/AF-L button at the back of the camera. This works fantastic when focusing on an object and recomposing without changing your distance to what you are shooting. Also, while shooting in Manual you can change the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO with the adjustment wheel on top of the camera. To adjust the ISO, press the 'Fn' button on the front left of the body near the flash button and turn the wheel while the button is depressed. To adjust the aperture, press and hold the exposure compensation button near the adjustment wheel and turn the wheel to adjust. The shutter speed requires no additional button to be held, simply rotate the adjustment wheel. This is how I have mine setup and it works like a dream. It allows for quick adjustments to shutter speed, aperture, and ISO as well as allowing me to focus on an object, recompose, and take multiple shots in succession without refocusing for every shot. Overall, I thought this was an excellent, unbiased review and a great video for buyers on the fence.
First, thanks very much for your very kind words; secondly thanks for setting the record straight - I didn't realize that one setting would do both (on most cameras one must find two settings) I appreciate your contribution, I'll try to be more diligent next time in making sure I try those kinds of solutions. And yes, it's a great feature to have exactly for the situation you describe - most photographers call this back focus. I also very much appreciate the exposure settings tip - I can see how that would be very useful, particularly after your hand learns the position of those buttons. I will say that while I"m shooting I typically only adjust one - but it's good to be able to access them all. Again, I appreciate your time in commenting.
Got a D5500 a week ago and am very pleased with it and the four lenses that came with this gently used model for $650 Canadian. Aa newbie to Photography I’m just scratching the surface of the features and I don’t expect to outgrow it anytime soon..
That is a decision that you need to make based on the brand you prefer, the accessories (like lenses) you already have and the features offered and the price you're willing to pay. Take all of those out of the equation and I'd take the D5500.
Thank you so much for the review. Could you compare the 1080p output of the D5500 with the 1080p output of the Sony a6300? If I recall correctly, you tend to shoot the sony a6300 in 4K and then downsample to 1080p though, which probably means the D5500 would be far inferior in terms of video quality. Thanks in advance.
Although I do still have the A6300 (I bought one), I returned the D5500 after the review, so can't do a side-by-side. I thought the A6300's HD was slightly less than average, so likely would find the D5500 the same or better. 4K, of course, is another matter.
Always glad to hear I've been a useful resource to help you get started. Of all the issues in this video - the question about the hood is one that frequently comes up. It is the HB75 bhpho.to/2mINZlJ. It is included with the 16-80 lens. bhpho.to/2m7CEaG
please expound on your preference of sims card. your video was very helpful. i recently purchased a barely used nikon d5500 and am anxious to get familiar with it.
The only brands I trust are Panasonic and Sandisk. I suggest the larger SDXC type, I'm using mostly 64GB cards. For 4K video and high speed burst, the cards rated U3 can keep up where others cannot. If the camera supports UHS-II type, I use those. Hope this helps.
great review as I'm stuck between the canon 700d twin lense kit with 75 -300mm lense and the Nikon D5500 18-140mm lense and be for landscape photography , I used a 700D for a wedding but only for a day but not sure what to go for I'm 100% into photography and not videography
Thanks for the kind words. Make the choice with your hand (which one feels nicer) your wallet and your heart (which (brand) would you be proud to own, which would you never leave at home). They're both terrific cameras.
Maarten Heilbron to be completely honest I would be happy with either I love photography and picture mad as I kept getting told haha so I'm not bothered bout brand wise be happy to own either one just with most camera's now being 20+ mp I feel I'm kind of getting an outdated camera even tho I know it's not about the pixels , I liked the nikon side as was lighter and bit more different like iphone feel everyone has a canon haha but just want something that's going to be very sharp and fun to use and learn with but not cost a bomb to expand with lenses etc
You would/should be happy with either. If it were me, I'd take the D5500. I'd take the DX16-80 lens instead of the 18-140.You will appreciate the F2.8, the focus distance window (and the fact it's an E lens) way more than you realize. You will own the lens much longer than the camera, get a good one.
Maarten Heilbron yeah I noticed you say about the lense as watched it again as bes video and information I found for any of the camera's I looked at so definitely keep that up helps alot , and I'm going more the Nikon side as like the software and style side looks more pleasing and learner friendly , would the lense be good enough for landscape as goto the lake district alot even thinking of moving there as love it so much haha so want to capture it's gorgeous detail to bring home for the wall haha
+Maarten Heilbron... This going my first dlsr type camera... Which one would gave run most bang for my buck. A D5500 or Sony a6000.. A little background I'm going using this everything from family outing to landscape and everything in between.. Thanks again for your time
I would say the decision rests on the weight you want to carry. Then if stills is your primary focus, I'd prefer the Nikon, for video, I'd prefer the Sony.
+Maarten Heilbron I'm more concerned about the stills at this point... My cell phone does great with videos... Thanks again hopefully I'll pick my camera within the month or so and get shooting
Great review, that's a lot of info, especially for a camera novice like me. I will probably have to watch this video several times to understand everything. Thank you.
I assume that d5500 is close in specs as the d5600 which is the camera I am considering as next camera after 40 plus years of canon shooting. Any ideas or comments welcome. As always a great review.
Not that there's anything wrong with either of these cameras - but which Canon are you putting away? How many lenses are you walking away from? Why switch? Canon offers lots of good choices.
Great review! Love your vids! I want to buy my first DSLR. I have been into film photography for about 2 years. I am really stuck between the Nikon d5500/d5300 or the Canon T6s/T6i. I don't know wich one to pick and wich brand would be better for me in the future. Or schould I wait for new models releasing soon?
I certainly appreciate the kind words, thank you very much. There will always be a new model with some improvement, that for most of us doesn't make so much difference. I assume you don't have an investment in lenses. They're both great choices, so let your wallet, your hand (how does it feel when you hold it) and your heart (which one would you be proud to own) help make your choice. I like the T6, but would likely choose the D5500.
Thank you! Great advice! I will go to the store and try them a bit out first. I am also stuck if I should go for mirrorless? to be more precise the sony a6300?
Mirrorless ... there's a whole new set of decision points - my take - ruclips.net/video/eChVvXiHyxU/видео.html. Unless you need 4K video, save some money for lenses by getting the A6000 - the best value camera on the market today. Here's my A6000 to A6300 comparison: ruclips.net/video/PXTzQPnDx2c/видео.html
If you look closely at Nikon's D5500/D5300 advertising and brochures, you'll notice they mention that the camera does NOT have a low-pass filter. This is a very, very good thing, giving you much sharper and more detailed photos. All Canon DSLRs have it, presumably because their sensors would perform poorly without it. In this price range, go with Nikon if you go DSLR. Mirror-less is a whole other thing. Oh yeah, and you can wait forever for new models, since they're always being announced. Remember, 90% of photography is about something other than equipment.
D5500 is a extremely good beginner level camera. D7000 series is more pro. I'm realizing this when I've grown as a photographer and I can't use nikon cls or commander mode for speedlights with my D5500.
Great video...im hoping to buy my first camera for general and travel photography.which is the best option Nikon D5500 or Canon 750D? what about sony a6000 or a6300? Thanks
Thanks for the kind words. All are great all purpose cameras for travel. You might prefer the Sony models as they're smaller and lighter. I'd suggest a less expensive camera (like the A6000) with a better than average lens (like the Sony/Zeiss 16-70). Hope this helps.
That is an appreciated tip, thank you. However in addition to adding the ability to focus to a button other than the shutter, you need to remove focus action from the shutter button. How do you do that?
Maarten Heilbron The option is not that granular in the D5500. Once the AE-L/AF-L button is assigned to AF-ON the shutter button is automatically unassigned from that function. A half press only illuminates your focus point and toggles the display of available buffer capacity for continuous shooting. It seems a bit counter productive to me to have your shutter button assigned to focus while back button focus is enabled. So it looks like nikon combined those two setting changes into one in Nikon's lower end DSLRs. I think the D3200 is the same way, if I can recall correctly.
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words. Although the D5500 (as other Nikon DSLRs) has a "quiet" setting, no camera with a mirror is silent. If you need silent, look at the Sony A7 series, which has several models with a fully electronic (silent) capability.
There is something very old school about DSLRs, as opposed to mirrorless cameras. However, if you've made the choice for a DSLR, the D5500 is an excellent choice for a novice photographer. If you're wondering about mirrorless compared to DSLR, I met up with Paul Marshman to discuss: ruclips.net/video/eChVvXiHyxU/видео.html
It is lens dependent. And I thought it was an E in the lens' name that was the key, but I may be wrong ... ruclips.net/video/eVN4y2Zu1LQ/видео.htmlm15s as I mention in my D3400 lens tutorial.
Hi sir! i really loved and enjoyed watching your videos. thank you for sharing. im looking for my first dslr camera and im walking between the d5500, d3300 and the d3400. which one would you recommend me to get? I'd very appreciate your help :)
Unless you need a specific feature only offered by one of these, they're all good, so my recommendation is to let your wallet, your hand (does one feel more comfortable) and your aesthetics decide.
Maarten Heilbron the stores near me dont have these products instore so i cant let my hand tell me what it likes :D im just gonna go for the d5500. But i feel much more confident to buy this now since you recommended, and i really like this review of yours. Thanks for the fast response. I appreciate it. Keep up the good work sir, Thank you! :)
The swivel screen, combined with liveview, is also useful for getting low angle shots when it's hard to get your eye down to that level - or when trying to shoot over crowds.
sketchyou i did buy it buddy, having a hard time with it, indeed cuz in new to dslr. But i love it so far and the screen is totally worth it, it is touch screen also. They're having a promotion for their 100th anniversary, sweet deal! Get yours before they ran out!
Hi, very nice review, I was wondering, will I be able to take pictures like yours but with a "regular" lens like AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Lens - Black? I'm just a little worried that people make reviews of cameras with very expensive lens, sometimes, even more expensive than the camera, so, I just don't know if that great pictures are thanks to the camera or the lens? I want to buy the camera with that lens because I don't have cash for more expensive lens, so, I wanna hear your opinion. Thank you.
I appreciate the kind words. Of course ... I know that many people dismiss kit lenses, and although they might not satisfy demanding photographers, they are excellent value with very good quality. The major downside of any lens with a ramped aperture is that if you zoom in you'll need more light or a higher ISO and will sacrifice some background blur. But "pictures like mine"? The majority do not exercise the boundaries of the lens - and when they do, the challenge may enhance your creativity. However, better glass is better glass, and investing in better lenses is a far better use of a limited budget than a more expensive camera. Hope this helps.
Maarten Heilbron Hi, thank you so much for your fast reply, when I said pictures like yours, I wanted to said like the pictures in this video review. I want to buy this camera but only have for the 18-55mm kit lens, so, if I would be able to take pictures half decent like in this video, I will be happy; this is going to be my first dslr camera. I did not want to be disrespectful at all, I know that taking great pictures like yours in the video takes more than just a good camera and lens. keep rocking Maarten, and If you find yourself anytime in Medellin, Colombia, let me know, I would like to invite you to drink some beers have a good day :)
Understood. I'm not sure when I might end up on Medellin (although friends who've been have recommended it), but I'll remember to let you know. In the meantime, best wishes and send links to your photos.
I don't really have very much Nikkor lens experience, but if the kit lens doesn't work for you, then check out the lens recommendations at wirecutter: thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-first-nikon-lenses-you-should-buy/
HI! Did I misunderstood or did you say that this model you can't take the focus from the release button? I just became a back button shutter and my D5500 does that and I loved it!. I apologize in advanced if you meant something else. Beautiful video, thanx!
I didn't think so, but another viewer commented that when you assign focus to the button, it simultaneously lifts the focus from the shutter ... (i returned the camera so I can't check).
That's a good question. I've returned the kit to Nikon, so I can't check, but it was the hood provided by Nikon - although, as you suggest, it may not be supplied with the lens.
Hello again Marteen ☺️ two simple questions today. 1) I'm looking for a very very cheap old nikon with SD card under 100€, found old d70/80 going to 200€ for d90/d 200 or 7000. But rally bad video capabilities. At least a cheap shoot camera to upgrade later but able to beat my eos 1100d. D70/80 are ahead? 2) looking for the oldest nikon with similar d5500 (60p) video capabilities, used and around 200/250€. I can wait, and I'll buy it later. Want to grab for the moment a cheap old and well made nikon to achieve better photo against my eos1100d and of course a lens to pair with, maybe in future I'll buy a d5500 or better. I have a Panasonic x920 f1.5 for video but really noisy when recording into house even with 2x100w lamps. This d5500 camera seems fine and complete for dual usage but expensive with a lens according to budget. Thanks
Hi! I have wanted to have a professional camera for some a while, specially a Nikon camera, and now decided it's time to get one. Many reviews show this as the best of the cameras with similar features and price. Do you think this is a hit for a first camera?
Yes, it's a good choice at any point in your photo career - unless you are a professional. For a DSLR, it's small and light, but what's "best" is very subjective and depends upon the kind of photographs you plan to take.
I wanna know Maarten, what are your thoughts on both Photos and videos ?? which is more reliable A6000 Or D5500? I want something that is good in both fields
For me the difference goes far beyond reliability, which I would judge to be about equal. Do you want a full-sized DSLR or a smaller mirrorless camera? Do you want a Sony or a Nikon? I would find any mirrorless camera to be more capable/useful for video than a DSLR. For photos, they are about the same - but that depends more on lenses, and how you feel about Sony and Nikon default picture profiles (unless you're shooting RAW).
Shooting raw, I've not an expert so i dont need something too bulky or has to many settings you get me? I was looking at the Canon T6I vs the A6000. I heard the Sony A6000 does better than DSLR Cameras in videos and focusing is a lot better.
Both of these are full featured enough to have a lot of settings when you need. Yes, mirrorless cameras, like the A6000 are better for video. I would not put too much emphasis on focus speed.
hmm all Im thinking of right now is, I know canons have more lens for you to use than a sony does, but so for all the reviews for the A6000 seem to be better than all the DSLRS? because you mentioned they take pictures about the same and Videos on mirror less are better?
Difficult decision - if you don't already have lenses for one or the other, I'd be guided by price, the way they feel to your hand and your brand preference.
***** Thanks for your reply, Both have same price here in Poland. You used both of them , What you think which is better for Photo's as i'm not into video photography. I was thinking of Nikon + 18-105mm + 50mm f1.8 but than i saw canon , it has 2 dial and top screen.. I'm confused now. please help me to decide. I need camera for hobby, family & travel only. Thanks
If you plan to shoot manual, the two dials, to change both shutter and aperture easily, is better. Still, either is a good choice, personally, I'd likely take the Nikon.
+Maarten Heilbron on the d5200 at least the option is there to move auto focus to the AE-L button on the back. It's found in custom settings menu, f2. AF-ON to set the camera for back button focus. I would assume the newer d5500 has this option there as well.
The option to use the button for back focus is there (as illustrated in the video), what I did not find was the ability to press the shutter without also invoking autofocus. Typically this is also a custom setting.
Maarten, I have used this camera in an amateur filmmaking environment, and it works splendidly. I have some music videos on my channel: Let's Play Alliance if you'd like to see them Happy shooting!
can you tell me the name of the hood you have on your camera? and what lens it is for? thanks ................20 min later.. never mind i found it nikon HB75. saw it in the video =)
Would you recommend the nikon d5500 over the nikon d7000? They are both the exact same price and Im only going to be doing photography, and using a 50mm 1.8 on either camera.
The D5500 is newer and has a few more features, so it would be the one I'd pick. On the other hand, I didn't review the D7000, so can't really say. If you owned the D7000 I would probably not recommend an upgrade, but starting with a clean slate, the D5500 would be the better camera.
Inasmuch as Nikon makes several models that are more expensive and have more features, I would say it is not a great camera. However, it is a very good camera.
Everyone has their own perfect camera - that's why there are so many to choose from. Both are good choices. Let your wallet, your hand (how the camera feels when you hold it) and your heart guide you. Choose the one you love, the one you would never leave at home. Best wishes.
Congratulations. Have you checked the manual?, it's usually included in the box. It's also available as a pdf from Nikon online. I see good instructions on page 5, the delay options are set in c3. Hope this helps.
I use my d5500 on professional work and the image quality will not disappoint you, it produce very beautiful and sharp images, its my all around carry camera wherever i go and pit my d750 on my bag :)) its light witha 35mm 1.8
Thanks for your comments, I always enjoy hearing from other photographers.
Excellent review with no filler. Thank you.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
This has to be one of the best camera reviews I have ever seen. As other have said, thanks for the non "filler" shots.
it's entirely my pleasure - but I do thank you for your very kind words.
Mr. Heilbron, you have a wonderfully relaxing and informative overview of a potential "next camera" candidate for me. Thank you kindly, mister.
That's very kind of you to comment, thanks.
Thank you for the field test and review of the Nikon D5500. I ordered one this morning and will have it in my hands on Wednesday, which is my birthday. I watched your review and a couple others which helped me in making my decision. I appreciate all you do in teaching us about the products out there. Keep up the great work!!!
How nice to read your comments, thank you very much - it's good to know that my videos are helpful and appreciated.
I have to say Maarten, your review is wonderfully comprehensive - I already owned my D5500 but some of your video revealed new or forgotten features. I look forward to more reviews from you.
What a kind and generous comment, thank you! I hope that I won't disappoint you.
Best review ever done for Nikon D5500. I own this camera with 18-55 kit lens, 50mm prime and 55-300 mm telephoto lens. And I am loving it.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
By far the best review I've seen for this camera
I am happy to have D5500 and it's been a year
Thanks for your kind words, always appreciated.
Outstanding review! I just bought a D5500, upgrading from an old Canon XTi. Cameras sure have changed since I got the Canon 7 or 8 years ago! Thank you for such an informative review, sir!
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks!
Loved the content.... It was like listening to a story... Seldom does that happen in tech videos.. :)
I am honoured to be the recipient of such a kind and generous compliment, thank you.
OMG! Your vids are the very best of any other photo tut vids on the net! The depth and style, your expertise and professionalism...
Thank you very much for taking the time to post such nice words, I really appreciate that.
Sounds like you made a good choice. Thanks for watching and for sharing your kind words.
for me the best review video i have ever watched in years didnt get bored once :) keep it up!
What a pleasure to read your kind words - thank you for taking the time to comment.
Wonderful review and explanation on the camera's various features. Even when it's per say a camera I'm not in the market for it's still great to hear your opinion on it. Thank you.
Those are very kind words, thanks for commenting. It's my pleasure.
i like all of your reviews. Its brief, precise and its everything i want to know. simply the best among others. keep it up sir.
+eramil borres I appreciate your kind words, thanks.
if you dont mind sir, maybe you can do a review of x-t1 and a6300, how great they are when it comes to the quality of taking pictures and video as well. thanks a lot and more power to you.
You will find reviews of both of those cameras on my channel.
Living in Montreal as a student I recognised almost all your shots, amazing work great review :)
It's always a pleasure to use Montreal as a backdrop for a review. Thanks for the kind words.
Awesome, thank you for the info! :) Getting back into photography and the videos have been quite helpful!
my pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
best review on this camera i been thinking to get the D5500 or Canon T6s im currently using the D5100
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated.
Best camera review i've ever seen, today i buy D5500, i hope that your video help me alot... thankyou
That's very kind of you to say, thanks.
I love the way you reviewing the camera. Thanks, Sir.
That's a very generous comments, thanks for your kind words.
I’ve had my D5500 for 3 years now and it has always been my go to travel camera. Takes amazing still pictures.
That's good to hear, thanks for commenting.
A fantastic review , no other vedio has gone so deep in explaining the features as u did .
Very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
You got a new subscriber! Loved the way you explain the features
So kind of you to say, thanks for the kind words and subscribing!
Great review, thanks, just bought one of these as my second body, pleased that I have made a good choice.
Always nice to read kind words from a happy viewer. Thanks for commenting.
Wow this was really helpful! I loved the camera tour and menu explanation and you covered everything I could imagine . Thanks
I'm so pleased that you found my video worthwhile. Thanks for the kind words.
this is the best review of Nikon d5500 , very informative and detailed .!!!
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for commenting.
I know this is an old video, but I recently grabbed one
Always nice to hear from a viewer who appreciates my work, thanks for taking the time.
Thanks for the video. Just found a great deal on this camera. Cant wait to use it. Will be my first DSLR.
Always my pleasure, thanks for commenting.
nice video though still can't decide with D5300 and 700D or should I invest more and buy D5500 or 750d,
If you're having trouble deciding, I'd always recommend the less expensive one, but not if you'll feel inferior and the perceived wallet impact is the same for you.
Thanks for the note and the kind words ... the opportunity to loan the camera hadn't come up. Let me know which models you intend to collect next.
+Maarten Heilbron The Cameras I intend to collect is the Samsung NX1, Canon 750D or 760D, Nikon D750 great all round full frame camera.
Nikon D500.
+Maarten Heilbron I am going to use the 16-85mm on the Nikon D5500
great review i got every single detail regarding this camera
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated.
Really nice review good job
I need your advice please ))
Nikon D5500 or Canon 750D ? which one should I buy ?
Hmmm ...
So glad you found the information you needed, and thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
Fantastic Review.
Amazingly thorough, clear and concise. Thank You!!!
Thanks for taking the time to comment with such nice words. Appreciated.
Agreed on all counts - battery life and overheating are major mirrorless concerns.
A very informative, in depth video. I'm very likely to get this camera now. Though which lenses would you recommend to start with?
Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. Nikon has so (too?) many lenses ... I really enjoyed the DX 16-80 I featured in the review. For a larger perspective (they've tried and analyzed more lenses and reviews) I rely on wirecutter. thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-first-nikon-lenses-you-should-buy/
Thanks, I'll check out the link
Very helpful and informative video with great voice-over work. Thank you!
Very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
I bought this camera for my dad and he loves it. Great review btw.
Thanks for your kind words - wish I was your dad.
Maarten,
To clarify, you said "there's no setting to remove focus from the shutter release." This is incorrect.
Sounds like a nice kit to spend some time exploring the potential of your photographic vision.
thanks for helping good video
i want to buy a camera between nikon d5500 or 700d which is best .??
That is a decision that you need to make based on the brand you prefer, the accessories (like lenses) you already have and the features offered and the price you're willing to pay. Take all of those out of the equation and I'd take the D5500.
A D5500 é EXCELENT , a melhor câmara dos últimos anos, feita por qualquer marca !!!
Obrigado por compartilhar seu entusiasmo.
Thanks for sharing this.. is this camera good for vlogging? God bless
It might be a little heavy, but otherwise should be fine.
Maarten, have you ever tested this camera (or another one) with the Tamron 18-400? I'd love to see your review of that lens. Thanks
I have not, I'm not really good a testing lenses ... try dxomark or dpreview
Great video this information has help me Pick my first camera and I'm choosing this one 😊
Thank you for taking the time to comment with such kind words.
how did it work out for u?
where can I get that lens hood? I am so new to this and I just bought D5500, your video helped me a lot. thank you.
Maarten Heilbron Thank you. Cantbwait to to start playing with my new toy!
always my pleasure Mmmmm ... that fresh from the factory new camera smell ...
great review as I'm stuck between the canon 700d twin lense kit with 75 -300mm lense and the Nikon D5500 18-140mm lense and be for landscape photography , I used a 700D for a wedding but only for a day but not sure what to go for I'm 100% into photography and not videography
For landscapes, I would always recommend the lens with the largest filter diameter (this is 72mm). It's also a nice universal size for filters.
Thank you for the helpful review will be getting it soon thanks to this video.
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
great review sir.. helpful but I have few questions. first should get the kit lens or pick up a tamrron 17-50.
Thanks for the kind words - I haven't used the Tamron, so can't compare the two. Next question?
Very good.
Great review, that's a lot of info, especially for a camera novice like me. I will probably have to watch this video several times to understand everything. Thank you.
That's very kind of you, thanks for commenting.
Hi Maarten, it says Fuji XPro2 on the description
Highly enjoyed the video!
THANKS! That's what I get for working late. Fixed now, and I appreciate the kind words.
Superb review, thank you
That's very kind of you to say, thanks.
Really great and detailed review.
Thank you, that's exactly what I set out to achieve, nice to be recognized.
Thanks for info about the E lens.
Always nice to know that I've provided useful information, thanks for the kind words.
more reviews should be done like this
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
Great Thanks Alot!!
Nicely done, congratulations and thank you!
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
For the same money of a D5500, I picked up a D7100 in mint condition :)
Nice work.
And you think D7100 is better? :))
D7100 has more to offer, I think its better than the D5500 if your into Manual stuff for sure
D5500 is a extremely good beginner level camera. D7000 series is more pro. I'm realizing this when I've grown as a photographer and I can't use nikon cls or commander mode for speedlights with my D5500.
Thanks for that tip.
impressed detail review!! just what i need, thank you
Thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
***** Thanks alot.Much appreciated..
Always my pleasure.
There is, and always has been, a way to reassign the AE-L/AF-L button to AF-ON. I own a d5500 and I back button focus.
Thanks for the helpful clarification - other brands have a specific setting to remove the focus from the shutter.
The only review that responded my question ! Who knew E series Nikons would make a difference 🤦♀️
Thanks, always nice to know that my level of detail is appreciated.
I'm new to DSLR camera. Great review, thanks a lot!
Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate the kind words.
Great Maarten !
I appreciate the kind words.
Hello, and thank u for the video,
does the camera have silent mode?
Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words. Although the D5500 (as other Nikon DSLRs) has a "quiet" setting, no camera with a mirror is silent. If you need silent, look at the Sony A7 series, which has several models with a fully electronic (silent) capability.
I am new to the dslr photography but i have been watching tutorials lately, would that be a better idea chosing nikon d5500 for a beginner like me?
There is something very old school about DSLRs, as opposed to mirrorless cameras. However, if you've made the choice for a DSLR, the D5500 is an excellent choice for a novice photographer. If you're wondering about mirrorless compared to DSLR, I met up with Paul Marshman to discuss: ruclips.net/video/eChVvXiHyxU/видео.html
great review but I have one question which lens was used with the lens hood in this video?
Thanks for the kind words, I thought I mentioned that: ruclips.net/video/esc0PNAh9-k/видео.htmlm27s
It's the DX 16-80E lens.
thanks again ^^
whoa can someone explain 4:03? I thought you COULDN'T change aperture in live view at all on cheaper Nikons?
It is lens dependent. And I thought it was an E in the lens' name that was the key, but I may be wrong ... ruclips.net/video/eVN4y2Zu1LQ/видео.htmlm15s as I mention in my D3400 lens tutorial.
Thank you very much. That's a huge plus for me now
Always my pleasure to know I've been able to help.
Straight to the point! Nice video
I'm always trying to be as efficient with your time as I can. Thanks for your kind words.
Hi sir! i really loved and enjoyed watching your videos. thank you for sharing. im looking for my first dslr camera and im walking between the d5500, d3300 and the d3400. which one would you recommend me to get? I'd very appreciate your help :)
Unless you need a specific feature only offered by one of these, they're all good, so my recommendation is to let your wallet, your hand (does one feel more comfortable) and your aesthetics decide.
Maarten Heilbron the stores near me dont have these products instore so i cant let my hand tell me what it likes :D im just gonna go for the d5500. But i feel much more confident to buy this now since you recommended, and i really like this review of yours. Thanks for the fast response. I appreciate it. Keep up the good work sir, Thank you! :)
always my pleasure
I did not want to be disrespectful at all, I know that taking great pictures like yours in the video takes more than just a good camera and lens.
keep rocking Maarten, and If you find yourself anytime in Medellin, Colombia, let me know, I would like to invite you to drink some beers
have a good day :)
Understood. I'm not sure when I might end up on Medellin (although friends who've been have recommended it), but I'll remember to let you know. In the meantime, best wishes and send links to your photos.
Great, thank you! I pick up mine next Sunday!
Always nice to hear that you appreciate my work, thanks for commenting.
great review
That's very kind, thank you.
Great video. Going to MOAB, Ut soon. Can you recommend a good landscape lens? I have a nifty fifty and AFS 18mm-140 Nikkor.
Thanks. I'd probably pick the 10-24 for wide angle landscapes, if you feel the 18 end of your 18-140 isn't suitable.
I bought this camera today and I want lens for full body portrait you recommend
I don't really have very much Nikkor lens experience, but if the kit lens doesn't work for you, then check out the lens recommendations at wirecutter: thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-first-nikon-lenses-you-should-buy/
HI! Did I misunderstood or did you say that this model you can't take the focus from the release button? I just became a back button shutter and my D5500 does that and I loved it!. I apologize in advanced if you meant something else. Beautiful video, thanx!
i meant back button focus shutter... excuse my english... haha
I didn't think so, but another viewer commented that when you assign focus to the button, it simultaneously lifts the focus from the shutter ... (i returned the camera so I can't check).
Very useful review.
What is that lens hood that you are using? As much as I know it doesn't come with the hood.
Thank you.
That's a good question. I've returned the kit to Nikon, so I can't check, but it was the hood provided by Nikon - although, as you suggest, it may not be supplied with the lens.
Great tutorial. Can I ask if D5500 has an AC power charger for it? Which one would you recommend? My battery can't do long video recording. Thanks.
Not that I know of, have you checked with Google?
This is very informative unlike other reviews. Thank you sir! #subscribed
What a kind comment, thank you.
i love this video!
Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks
Sorry, don’t have experience with those models to assist.
It's not that the quality of the video is better, it's just the design of mirrorless cameras is better suited to recording video.
Nice review, For still photography, which camera you prefer between D5500 or Canon 760D(T6s) ?
You can remove focus from the shutter release.
How did I miss that? Tell us how.
+Maarten Heilbron unfortunately that might be a while, as the camera currently finds itself back home while I'm on vacation.
Congratulations on the video! What lens are you using?
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. It's the 16-80, my favourite Nikon DX lens.
Maarten, I have used this camera in an amateur filmmaking environment, and it works splendidly. I have some music videos on my channel: Let's Play Alliance if you'd like to see them
Happy shooting!
Thanks kindly, I appreciate your comments.
Thanks your video is amazing 🙌🏻🙌🏻
So nice to read your kind words, thanks very much.
can you tell me the name of the hood you have on your camera? and what lens it is for? thanks
................20 min later.. never mind i found it nikon HB75. saw it in the video =)
It's the Nikon HD75 goo.gl/axHNbV , ,included with the DX 16-80E goo.gl/3P36yM.
Thank you very much for the simple answer! :)
always my pleasure
what is that lenshood name Sir? i want buy one... can u share link where u bought that? thanks

Is Nikon 5500 a great camera plz reply
Inasmuch as Nikon makes several models that are more expensive and have more features, I would say it is not a great camera. However, it is a very good camera.
Sir. I would like to buy a cam and I have two choices. Sony A 6000 and nikon 5300. Can you suggest me a perfect one.
Everyone has their own perfect camera - that's why there are so many to choose from. Both are good choices. Let your wallet, your hand (how the camera feels when you hold it) and your heart guide you. Choose the one you love, the one you would never leave at home. Best wishes.
Sir your video is awesome. I'm a bit confused between d5500 and sony a6000 please help..
Only you can make this decision - although I did try to help with my post last week.
i bought a nikon D5500...how to take a timer photo in this camera...pls explain me
Congratulations. Have you checked the manual?, it's usually included in the box. It's also available as a pdf from Nikon online. I see good instructions on page 5, the delay options are set in c3. Hope this helps.
Thank u Mr.Maarten
Always my pleasure.
