There was a great meme when the movie came out with a picture of Smaug on his treasure. It talked about the cost of the movie. It said the budget was so high because of Benedict. Paying the wizard to transform him into a dragon was cheap, but they blew most of the budget bribing him to accept being turned back into a human.
@@Bo2veteran originally in the books the spiders do speak to where everyone can understand them, so that’s why Bilbo hears the spider say it “Stings”. But the idea of it being a consequence or hidden ability of the ring was a cool idea imo
@@OfficialMediaKnightsif you liked him as Smaug, check out the BBC radio adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. He plays the Angel Islington perfectly in that.
17:20 If you look closely at Sting in Fellowship, you’ll notice that there is lettering on the blade. It reads “Sting is my name. I am the spider’s bane.”
Smaug '''I am fire, i am death'. Bilbo ''What have we done''. Then Ed Sheeran's song I See Fire starts was one of the most epic cinematography creations of all time.
no it was not. that song is lame af. for the greatest dragon in literature that lemanting, twinkle twinkle little star type of snoring music just ruined it. The song should have been epic rock and when I say rock I mean metal as fuck. Whoever listened to Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth album knows what I'm talking about.
@@ElysiumDusk that’s your type, that’s not mine. Whatever I eff with doesn’t mean you have to. Whatever you hate doesn’t necessarily applies to others so be respectful you ninny
the lamest of lame artist ed sheeran with a song from a completely different genre to a fantasy film?? are you serious? it was a joke of a choice the music should’ve been in keeping with the style of the film. An eerie lament of some sort or sorrowful elvish song
@@-isamu-9340 I totally agree with you. Everyone should enjoy whatever music they like. But that's not the issue and it wasn't my point. The point is that ed sheeran's song doesn't fit the movie at all. In another context it would work but not in this one. It's just marketing so that the movie appeals to a wider audience who listens to mainstream generic music. Another example is that song from travis scott at the end of Tenet. Compared to Ludwig Goransson's score, that song was kindergarten music. It's just marketing. It has nothing to do with art or the movie itself.
Fun Fact the actor who plays Legolas father loved the making of the armor behind the scenes he actually helped the costume designers with several different armors, and designers got a kick out of him making the orcs costumes. And in the books Smaug is actually of the few small dragons, so you think Bilbo is face to face with a giant dragon but he's face to face with a small one. Imagine how humongous the big dragons are. And Sauron and Smaug is voiced by 🥁🥁🥁🥁BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, Andy Kerkis aka Gollum gave Benedict some tips on how to act motion acting. This isn't the first time Martin Freeman and Benedict acted together, the starred in the show BBC Sherlock Holmes.
That is so cool! He must've had the time of his life working with the costume designers. Also Smaug is supposed to be a smaller dragon!? How big can they get!?
@@OfficialMediaKnightswell, the biggest one would be bigger than the mountain of Erebor. Forgot his name, but he was around for Morgoth, Sauron's boss, so that one is old.
1,000% agree! Watching "The Appendixes" of 'LoTR' and 'The Hobbit' is (to me) MORE entertaining that the movies themselves! Absolutely amazing feat by Sir Jackson and his entire 'Crew'!
@tileux that's what confused me, while watching this reaction (I haven't actually seen the movie) - it's been a long time, but I was fairly certain Bilbo never took off the ring, until he'd gotten away from Smaug
The Elves in the Hobbit are Wood Elves or Silvan Elves, as Tolkien writes "They differed from the High Elves of the West, and were more dangerous and less wise. For most of them (together with their scattered relations in the hills and mountains) were descended from the ancient tribes that never went to Valinor in the West". Without going into all the different groups and subgroups of Elves, the Silvan Elves were descended from the Nandor. In the first age the Valar (angelic beings of Middle Earth) called for all the Elves to leave Middle Earth and travel to Valinor because of the evil of Morgoth ( the first dark lord) it was known as the great journey west, some got part way and gave up before the Misty Mountains and decided to stay settling in the wide forests - this is who the Silvan Elves or wood Elves are descended from. Basically they are regarded as less advanced culturally and more rustic but attuned to nature, wanting to live simpler lives with nature and not worry about things the high lords like Galadriel, Elrond and Celeborn were concerned with. They could be regarded as more 'common' or 'rough and ready' than other groups of Elves, although to complicate things Thranduil was Sindar. This is why they appear different to the Elves seen in LOTR who are majestic, wise and fair - the Wood Elves could sort of be likened to your blue collar workers, blue collar Elves! The Silvar Elves are part of the Moriquendi, those who did not embark on the journey over the sea to Aman and behold the light of the Two Trees of Valinor. The Moriquendi lingered on the shores of Middle-earth or, indeed, never passed the Blue Mountains in the east of Beleriand or the Misty Mountains further to the east. Those Moriquendi who originally started on the journey but did not finish it were named the Úmanyar, which meant "Those not of Aman", those who refuse to go to Valinor were called Avamanyar, "Those who would not go to Aman".
Those spiders are actually the children of shelob. Shelob herself is actually the child of an ungodly powerful being called Ungoliant. They seem to become less powerful with each generation.
Everything becomes less powerful as the generations pass. It's a major theme of Tolkien. Sauron isn't as powerful as Morgoth, the spiders grow weaker and smaller, magic leaves Middle-Earth, the Elves leave as well. With every age power and magic diminishes and in the end there will only be the mundane world of Man
@@PyrusFlameborn yeah I rmbr somewhere that Tolkien had an idea of middle earth being the far FAR distant history of mankind today. I also saw something about a book following lotr where there were only humans in the 4th age but he ditched it cuz humans suck
From what i remember, the "jewels" thranduil wants from thorin was actually something thranduil sought after the death of his wife. the dwarves had them when smaug attacked.
Yes. If not wrong, the "jewels" are a gift from Thranduil for his wife, before she died by Angmar or orcs. The dwarves had them and refused to give it to Thranduil. Some say it's Silmarillion, the jewel that start the feud between elves and dwarves, but I don't think it is.
@@logankowatsch9669Not necessarily. There was nothing corrupt in him chosing to keep it a secret. He may have simply felt the time was not right. Nothing need be corrupt for this ti happen as it did.
At the beginning of the first movie Legolas dad had commissioned the dwarves to craft jewlery for his wife that sparkled like starlight, which is what they love more than anything else. While the dwarves were making them, Legolas' mother was killed by a dragon along with many other elves. When his father went to collect the jewelry the dwarves upped the price for them because they turned out so amazing, despite haveing already agreed to a price, knowing he wouldn't be able to pay the new price right away. His father warned them they were becoming too greedy and would bring a dragons attention. The dwarves were cocky and proud and ignored him.
Everyone immediately assumes Thranduil is just an asshole of an Elf (and granted, he kinda is, especially when speaking to Tariel about Legolas being in love with her) but theres more to it than that and its revealed slowly and in small pieces. Thranduil had fought and experienced dragons of the North before becoming king (or shortly after) the same dragons that killed his wife, hundreds of his people, and severely injured himself. He knew what the dwarves were doing and tried to reason with them. He wasn’t so much angry about the price as he was fearful to bring back the dragons that took nearly everything from him. Hes an ass yes, but for a reason. Hes been through a lot. Hes afraid. Lee Pace does an excellent job with what little screen time he gets in this film and the little bit more he gets in the third film. I had known of Lee Pace from Pushing Daises before this so I was excited to see his performance. His voice and stature (standing 6’5”) really gives Thranduil a certain weight and presence. The way that even when he bends over Thorin he’s still towering and pushing his chest out. It would have been really easy to make him this flat, one dimensional asshole and be done with it but Pace and the writers give him such depth and complexity. His love for his son, his people, his land and the want for the jewels which are his last connection to his wife.
Fun fact: Smaug loves gloating and enjoys the flattery Bilbo gives him in part because he's a relatively small and weak dragon. In the LOTR world, there's another dragon (drake?) called Glaurung, who is probably two to five times the size of Smaug. Not to mention Ancalagon the Black, whose size was such that he destroyed three giant active volcanoes called the towers of Thangorodrim simply by falling on them. (He was not necessarily larger than the towers, though) The towers of Thangorodrim are estimated to be approximately 35,000 feet tall, and 5 miles wide, according Karen Wynn Fonstad's "The Atlas of Middle-Earth", if her illustrations are drawn to scale.
9:55 I remember a lot of people were upset because the Necromancer was not in The Hobbit book, Gandalf would regularly just dip out on the Company with no real explanation. It was revealed though in later writings that when he dipped out, it was because he was investigating the Necromancer. 22:40 "îsh kakhfê ai’d dur-rugnul!” there's some complexities in the literal but it roughly translates to "I poop on elf heads"
Funny thing, he actually was in the original version of the Hobbit that Tolkien wrote. Supposedly his editors had Tolkien take him out because it was, of course, supposed to be a children's book and the Necromancer would be "too frightening"
legolas father makes a lot of sense on why he’s the way he is, the scar, his wife being dead, him protecting his ppl, the fact the dwarfs ignored his advice, his only son, n i assume elves mate for life so if legolas dies he loses everything
thranduil lost hisfirst home, doriath, to evil dwarves. later he lost his father and a good chunk of his people in the first war against sauron. it's understandable he doesn't want to get involved
@@emkalinaand let's not forget that Elves are immortal. By chosing to fight they do not just risk a human lifespan, they risk eternity. So of course they are more hesitant for risking eternity is a way higher bar than risking a few centuries
And when Bilbo retired to Rivendell, the Elven smiths engraved the blade with: "Maegnas aen estar nín - dagnir in yngyl im" (Sting is my name - I am the spider's bane) So many little details make the movies so much better!
In fact Bilbo wasn‘t the only one to ever willingly give up the ring. There was also the best hobbit ever, a potato-lover, a gardener, the bane of Shelob and the most loyal friend anyone could ever wish for (I‘m talking about Sam of course. He gave the ring back to Frodo after he found him in the Tower of Cirith Ungol).
@@VW20-bq9in True. I like that they made Sam had that look too, it was like he was also reluctant to give it back. Frodo however, was familiar with the ring's pull and he immediately recognized it in Sam, so...yah he snatched it. I thought OP was talking about Tom Bombadil lol
You two have quickly become my favourite reactors, can tell you're not just watching movies for quick, easy content and there's a genuine love for movies that you have, plus you're both very likeable. Great stuff, keep it up!
Not so fun fact- Ian had to do many scenes by himself due to heavy cgi, at a certain point while filming he broke down crying (prolly due to isolation) and was heard via a hot mike 😢
Fun fact: Benedict Cumberbatch not only did the voice work for Smaug but he also did the motion capture for him as well. There’s literally footage of him in a mocap suit doing all of the movements, even the face movements too. It’s actually really funny to watch, it’s all on RUclips!! ❤ I can’t wait to see your reaction to Five Armies next, it’s my favourite one out of the series. 😁
"Sting" was actually forged by the Elves to specifically take out spiders. It's true name is Magnus, and upon the blade, in Elvish, it says "I am the spider's bane"
The first movie, the smaug sequence, the misty mountain song and the ending song of the third movie are the only things i like about this trilogy. Btw in the first movie i could go without all the white super villan arc and the huarg sequence. The rest of the trilogy for me is trash.
@@pilotoreplicante funny thing for me is, is that in my opinion the first movie is the weakest of the three, also I feel like the only person who actually really enjoys all three movies
You should have been in the theaters when this movie ended and we all knew we had to wait another year to see what was going to happen next. The collective, “NOOO!!” was impressive 😅
Fun facts: the barmaid/server in The Prancy Pony is the mother of the barman in The Fellowship. The actress that plays her also played the little Hobbit girl that gasped at Bilbo's story about the trolls, at his birthday party in the Fellowship. The actress also happens to be the daughter of Peter Jackson.
It was so cool getting to see him once again! Also that little moment with Gimli's dad was kinda heartwarming knowing what's gonna go down between Legolas and Gimli.
@@OfficialMediaKnightsA lot of people don’t know this, but after “The Lord of The Rings” in his other writings Tolkien mentions that Legolas eventually builds a ship to head to the undying lands. He invited Gimli to join him, he was the first and only dwarf ever to do so. Talk about character growth.
Legolas is described in the Fellowship book as a Wood Elf like Thranduil, but I don't think he is ever described as Thranduil's son- interesting take for the movies to make them related.
What I noticed is that Smaug was also really polite when trying to find out what Bilbo’s name was. And also the I am Fire, I am death brings me chills can feel it way deep down in my gut 😂😂
Smaug's voice is Benedict Cumberbatch. He said that his father used to read The Hobbit out loud for him when he was a boy. His take on Smaug is how his father used to voice it to him.
I love when they have the Elves' light of the Eldar visible to others (like when Frodo saw Arwen, or Elrond, for the first time). It's so cool. It really shows how unearthly they are. Also I love Smaug, he's so fricken cool
I've very rarely seen ANYONE pick up on the fact that Bilbo can understand the spiders while wearing the Ring. Because that's exactly how it works in the books.
Fun fact: Dragon sickness, also known as Gold sickness is a type of sickness that is caused by large amounts of treasure, particularly treasure hoarded by dragons. It results in greedy, illogical, and even violent behavior. This kind of sickness also affected the minds of Thror and Thorin as well.
I think they said the dwarves were more susceptible(at least in the expanded material)because when Sauron made the Dwarf Rings, the elves removed them, but the Dwarves were too stubborn to be controlled by Sauron and instead, it translated to insane amounts of greed.
I'm not so sure about Thrain (it's been 50 years since I read the books), but definitely Thror. Thrain's sickness in the movie was due to his captivity in Dol-Guldur.
@@AngelusBrady allow me to quote my earlier comment from a day ago around the same time: “Don't confuse Thrain with Thror. Thror, Thorin's grandfather, was beheaded. Thrain is son of Thror, father of Thorin.” But you’re right about Dol Guldur. I have corrected my comment with the correct place name. The point of my comment was that the dragon sicknes wasn’t upon Thrain (and hedged since it might differ in the books, but I haven’t read them in 50 years). But it was upon Thror and Thorin. A spell was upon Thrain.
@@aleatharhea From what I've read from others, Dragon Sickness isn't really what the film portrays. I think Tolkien only wrote like one line about it and was probably more of a metaphor than anything. Your original comment still contains the error of you yourself confusing the father and son. Thror was not captured in Dul Guldur. As for Thrain not suffering from Dragon Sickness, he got lucky that his father was still alive and was king. I think had he inherited the throne, he would have suffered as his father did and eventually his son did. And since he wore the greatest of the Dwarf rings, he likely would have suffered from its effects far more than either of his kin.
Epic nerd moment... Stephen Colbert, along with his sons and wife make a very brief appearance in Lake Town! Colbert is a well-known Tolkien nerd so this must have been an amazing experience! He is the eye-patched guy who knocks the side of the house that starts the little chain of signals that ends with Bard tossing the apple to the "fishermen" outside his house. There is also some great footage of Benedict Cumberbatch(sp?) doing the voice work for Smaug while on all fours swerving from side to side like he was a real dragon! These are the things that make you love movies!
"It never ceases to amaze me!" "What?" "The courage of hobbits!"Love Tauriels character the addition of Legolas (Denise's reaction btw "No way i gotta be hallucinating"😂) the festival of stars theme and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug is iconic Awesome reaction guys 😊
I don’t care what anybody says, I absolutely love this movie. I think it’s such a fun high fantasy adventure movie. And Benedict cumberbatch as Smaug and sauron was amazing
Agreed, I think the entire trilogy was at the very least very enjoyable. And the Desolation of Smaug is definitely the best overall of the three for me
Legolas was not in the Hobbit book BUUUT it just makes so much damn sense to put him in the story. He's the prince of Mirkwood, the very land they're crossing, he's the son of King Thranduil, who the protagonists meet with in the book, and he's a guard/patroller of those woods, making sure no invaders or intruders make it far. It would actually be stranger if they did NOT meet Legolas.
It makes sense he wouldn't be in The Hobbit book, as it was written long before TLOTR. I don't mind movies that choose to retcon characters into a movie adaptation. TLOTR movie came out first and it makes narrative sense for Legolas to be in The Hobbit since he was introduced in the TLOTR and, as you say, was son of King Thranduil in the movies and books.
When they were running to Beorn's house and Bombur outran them all that scene was created out of a bet. The actor playing Bombur is a runner but was having trouble with the shoes that were part of their costumes. He told Peter that he could outrun all of them if he could wear sneakers, and he did. If you look at their faces as he runs past the shock is very real. In the book Gandalf just leaves and then returns just before the battle and we don't find out where he went until the Silmarillion. Tauriel is completely made up and probably the thing that fans hate most about the movie, but mostly because of the love interest for a dwarf. Benedict Cumberbatch plays both Smaug and Sauron/The Necromancer. For Sauron he recorded them in Black Speech but saying the words completely backwards and then they played it forward for the movie which gave it an extra distortion. A subtle call back to The Fellowship of the Ring is the words Tauriel is saying while healing the dwarf is the same thing Arwen said in the common tongue on the river bank to preserve Frodo's life enough for him to last long enough for her father to heal him. And Frodo used the name Underhill in Bree because he remembered Bilbo's story of using riddles to try to confuse Smaug. He had heard that story so many times that he remembered Bilbo's story about telling Smaug "I come from under the hill, and under the hill and over the hills my paths have led."
About the differences in story telling between Lord of the Rings and Hobbit: remember the Hobbit is written by Bilbo und the Lord of the Rings by Frodo. Different story tellers - different story telling.
"Ishkh khakfe andu null" The dwarvish insult is quite difficult to translate as The Professor didn't fully complete Khuzdul, the dwarvish language. Closest translation is "to pour my excrement upon your head" hahaha. I love how childish the dorfs can be at times.
Love you are exploring all of the films! Nothing compares to the origional trilogy but these have their own place in the story telling of middle earth.
We have been having such a great time with these thus far, and honestly these movies stand on their own two feet, which is tough to accomplish after such an amazing trilogy with LOTR.
Aw man! Sorry to hear about that! Listen, get comfy, get yourself your favorite comfort food and get better. We're glad we get to entertain you for the day ❤️
It is Big Smaug, he would have two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda!
Leave us hanging? Imagine seeing this in theatres and having to wait a goddamn YEAR for the next one! Think on that! You can just watch it in the next few days!
Denise and Ari, we see Balin and Ori later in the first movie The Fellowship of the Ring. Balin is in the Tomb and Ori is the one that wrote the last words of the journal....... "We cannot get out......They are here" in the room with the cave troll fight. =(
All I can think about when Legolas gets a nose bleed after fighting the orcs is the guy from Dodgeball lol. "Nobody makes me bleeding my own blood!" Lol
I think Benedict Cumberbatch did a good job with Smaug. I really like the fact that the dragon can speak, is smart, and he's extremely cocky and glories in himself...there's something about that that just works
38:40 or so. Did you notice Tauriel said: "Tell me, mellon, when did we..." etc. What was the answer to the riddle at the door of Moria? Speak friend and enter. I love it.
in the book we didn't know about the rings of power or sauron. bilbo was using the ring as often as he could and it have no drawbacks except of making him a little bit secretive about founding it
Here you realized that one of the dwarves it´s Gimli´s father (Gloin); also meeting King Thránduil, Légolas father. I like so much as well the chemistry between Kili and Tauriel. I cannot wait to see with you the final chapter guys!!
YES!! It's so wonderful to see that Legolas grows, and eventually builds such a strong bond with Gimli later on! Also yesss, the chemistry between Tauriel and Kili is beautiful! Thank you for your support, we cannot wait for the next one!
@@OfficialMediaKnights I was wondering if you guys had figured out yet that this Balin is the same one whose tomb the Fellowship finds in Moria when they go there. (2 other dwarves of the 13 died there in battle as well).
It was mentioned elsewhere by someone in comments before me.. so I figured it was already out. They didnt answer then, so I thought I'd re-ask. No spoiling intended. @royalexodus2666
Thank you sooo much, we're so glad you're enjoying our video!! Thankfully we don't have to wait, especially after that cliff hanger it must have been torture 😭
It’s interesting you feel the “call backs” were heavy handed/ intentional fan service when The Unexpected Journey is closest to Tolkien’s writing out of the 3 movies & written prior to LOTR. I had a friend watch the Hobbit trilogy 1st and she said the same thing about Fellowship of the Ring. 🤷🏽♀️😆
53:57 - voice of dragon is Benedict Cumberbatch. Bilbo Baggins is Martin Freeman. And what we see - Sherlock and Dr. Watson again together. P.S. All movements of the dragon were made on a green screen with motion capture is Benedict Cumberbatch.
Ive often thought when Kili sees Tauriel shining with light (He is seeing her as she truly appears, how she would look in Valinor) he is seeing it because he is so close to death he is able to see her Fëa (her soul). The elves being the first of Eru'Illuvitars children are much closer to the Valar and Maia in true appearance so their souls would indeed look angelic. We see something similar with Frodo in Fellowship when he is so near to slipping into the Wraith world he can see Arwins Fëa which drives back the darkness briefly. (though in the book it is actually the Elven hero Glorfindel)
Smaug’s voice in theaters literally rumbled the seats. It was AWESOME. I actually clipped the “come now, don’t be shy” line and made it my text tone and one time I had my phone in my bra and got a text and pretty much jump-scared myself because the vibration was so startling 😂 For me, Howard Shore’s Hobbit score isn’t as good as it was in LOTR, but one thing I think he really hit out of the park is Smaug’s theme. It’s eerie and distinct and sets the mood perfectly. I have some art design quibbles with the Hobbit (too much CGI for the orcs and goblins, some of the dwarves’ hair designs 😬), but they did not miss on a single bit of Smaug. Just an incredible dragon overall! Also, thank you guys for these brilliant Hobbit movie reactions - you’ve reminded me how just fun and funny they are. They get a lot of hate and sure, they’re not the masterpiece the og trilogy is, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worthwhile. I actually love how they took Gandalf’s perspective from the LOTR appendices (showing us all the White Council/Dol Guldur/Necromancer stuff) and incorporated it in the movies to give us the bigger overall picture too. Can’t wait to see the finale next week! ❤
This movie is where they added a lot of extra stuff to help stretch the story out into three movies. I'm not complaining. Definitely needed more females, Bard's kids and the she-elf, to balance out the original set of 15 boys. And the fight on the river in the barrels was fun. The talk between Bilbo and Smaug was directly from the book. The power of Tolkien's words. it was the same between Bilbo and Gollum.
Haha I kind of hate the over CGI’d video game action thing but it doesn’t bother me too much anymore. These movies have moments that make up for things like that.
It was fun to see Benedict and Martin reunited after their Sherlock series. In Middle Earth, Worms are the name given to the fire 'creating' lizard types with Dragons being the Alphas. So saying slug was quite the low blow to a dragon's ego.
You just said that the flames must be so hot and intense from this dragon. When I was a boy, I was friendly with the janitor in my high school. One day he said, give me I wanna show you something, and he made me stand in front of the furnace on a yellow line that was the safety zone. He says just stay in there and he open the door, well, the heat came out of the furnace and literally felt like someone slapped me in the face, so I imagine Smaug.
The cliffhanger at the end of this film always gives me chills. Putting on headphones and turning up the volume to hear the bass of Smaug's voice and the despair in Bilbo's voice as he says "What have we done." was the perfect way to end this movie.
There is a great part in the book when they are in Rivendell, showing Elrond the items they found in the troll cave. Elrond is telling them the names of the Elven made blades. Bilbo asks if all Elven swords have names what is the name of his. Bilbo is told Elven *swords* have names, but his blade is more of a belt-knife than a sword. That is why Bilbo names it himself.
I know I'm a little late to the party but in 28:30 it actually was! the entire water sequence was filmed using 3 different sets: 1. a gopro attached to the barrels to give a pov shot. 2. an actual water circuit was constructed in set which allowed the crew to choose the speed and force of the water to film the most dangerous shots on a more controlled enviroment, and 3. they went to an actual river to film the rest of the shots (fun fact: they had to set a safety line and post many lifeguards towards the end of the river cause it led to a real waterfall, as well as have a lot of security and especialized crew on stand by during the in-shore scenes cause the more shallow the water is, the stronger the force it carries current-wise and many of the actors needed help getting out of the barrels cause of the weight of the soaked costumes barely allowed them to move). The visuals of the gopro scenes clash a lot with the rest of the softness and fluidity of the shots but it was the only way they could do it without ruining very expensive equipment. If you guys are ever curious as to all those things the entire "Making of" of this trilogy is worth the watch (each movie has it's own, they last a couple of hours if I remember correctly so it's like watching an entire movie, it's very emotional and they don't hide from showing the reality of what it is to work under extreme time pressure and what the costume department and Weta Workshop went through to make this feel like going back to Middle Earth as much as possible). So if you're ever interested, that'll be always waiting for you to watch on your own if you don't feel like adding it to the channel. Anyways, thank you for your reactions! I've been binge watching many to help me through some rough times and your genuine reactions are wholesome and fun. You're both very genuine and it's awesome!
the first time i learned that BENEDICT MF CUMBERBATCH was the voice of Smaug, i lost my mind. Smaug is one of my favorite dragons in any fictional story i've read, and the man voiced him to PERFECTION
Legolas is a prince which Gimli kind of mentioned in Two Towers after the battle of Helms Deep when they say their kill count and Gimil says "That's not bad for a pointy-eared Elvish princeling"
My god i love Benedict, he's so awesome and his voice in this is perfect for the dragon. Its also kinda cool watching the behind scenes him like crawling around like a dragon with the motion cap while voicing the dragon haha. He fully got into the role and it paid off well. I loved the Sauron battle as well. You really get a sense of his power
@@MrBigPicture835 Yes, and it's cool and definitely something they should check out! (The studio did imply that they used his mocap, probably for marketing or fan service.) I think there just was no way using the mocap data would've been feasible because they would've had to build terrain for him to crawl upon that mimicked the shifting mountain of gold; also, they probably didn't even have that modelled at that point. But they definitely took ideas from his movements and expressions! Cheers!

Morgoth created the Dragons as a secret weapon against the Elves in the First Age. The first of these was known Glaurung the Golden, Father of Dragons, flightless but possessed of a terrible cunning and fiery breath. Before he was full grown, Glaurung grew sick of waiting and went forth to attack the Elves who were maintaining the Siege of Angband, burning the plains of Ard-Galen and the Elvish settlements therein, but since he was not at his full strength, he ended up being driven back by Prince Fingon and his archers. Glaurung's essentially teenage defiance displeased Morgoth as it let his enemies know that he had more than Orcs in his arsenal. After the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age where Morgoth was defeated, most of his dragons were also slain, but some few fled, journeying eastward to the far northern wastes of Middle-Earth (as Beleriand to the west had sunk into the sea). Over time, they bred, but becoming smaller and smaller with each generation without the influx of dark power from their lost Master. Since they had such a lust for gold, and the lands to the south were mainly the lands of the Dwarves, they raided southward and destroyed the Dwarven Kingdoms where they could, taking their treasure hoards for their own. Some also attacked the lands of the Men who dwelt in the northeast of Middle-Earth as well, but there were some who fought back, and the numbers of these fire-drakes slowly dwindled throughout the Third Age. Smaug is considered the last of the great dragons, although it is theorized by Gandalf that some few lesser species survived into the Fourth Age, whereupon they slowly became extinct.
Beorn is played by Swedish Actor Mikael Persbrandt, and as a Swede it makes me kinda happy. ^^ He's very well respected and known as an actor here. ^^ The name Beorn sounds a LOT like Björn, which is the swedish word (and traditional boys name) for bear. ;)
Can't wait for your Battle of the Five Armies reactions!! It's so refreshing to watch it with others who have never seen it before, I always find myself smiling and laughing with you guys!
Fun fact about the giant spiders: they all descend from one absolutely gigantic spider that existed in the first era of the Middle Earth universe, she was called Ungolianth. She was so powerful that she managed to overpower Morgoth, Sauron's master long before Sauron himself became the big bad guy, and Morgoth had to call all the balrogs of the world to come protect him before Ungolianth killed him. They managed to beat Ungolianth and push her away, but barely.
To be fair at that point Melkor was already diminishing himself. In the beginning melkor was the most powerful being by far(after eru of course) but he after going into Arda he was continously expending power to corrupt the world.
You actually made it more enjoyable to watch than when I was in the cinema. I found it cartoony in too many places but considering it was based on a children's book, not too surprising. The first film felt more familiar to middle earth and loved that, but am comming round to appreciate this one more than did.
It's almost like the Dungeon Master told Gandalf's player: "Your character is too overpowered, man. You can join the group here and there, but you can't be there all the time, that would make the campaign too boring."
Dwarves always remember things from long ago, can hold on to grudges far longer than we realize, and no limitations to how long it goes on. Thorin can't ever forget the pass when the elves refused to aid him, and he hated that misdeed he never forgave them for it.
During LoTR 2, after their 1st bet in Helm's Deep, Gimli patronized Legolas as a "wee elvish princeling"...because Legolas IS a prince haha I do feel a tad unsatisfied by their choice of Legolas here, not of his existence in the movie adaptation, but his character. I personally really like the idea of Legolas appearing in the Hobbit movies even though he wasn't mentioned in the book, because Legolas WAS in Mirkwood during Bilbo's adventure. But since LoTR and Legolas were written after, Legolas and Bilbo didn't cross paths in the book. When Fellowship began, 2500+ yrs passed since Sauron's defeat. Legolas is at least 2000 yrs old when Fellowship started. In the Hobbit movies, Legolas felt like a seasoned and bitter warrior already. However, I believe he didn't have much experience in war or going outside the borders of Mirkwood because he was born at the end of the war against Sauron or immediately after his defeat. If he was born at the end of the war, he was too young and inexperienced to join the war, and his father would protect him as his only heir. At most, his tasks in this movie was accurate; patrolling their borders was the most action he experienced. Legolas only felt bigger danger when the Greenwood was corrupted by the "necromancer", where foul beasts like the giant spiders made their home there, and it became Mirkwood. If they wanted to tie the Hobbit & LoTR movies, it makes sense as well that Legolas was so innocent yet in Fellowship because his father was overprotective of his only child & family left. Legolas appearing in the Council of Elrond was a rare expedition outside Mirkwood, and his original mission was to bring news about Gollum escaping the Mirkwood prison. Him joining the Fellowship and the tribulations that followed were his real passage to adulthood, danger, and loss. He signed up for the Fellowship without his father's permission. Legolas's innocence and lack of real 1st hand troubles with dwarves, also paved way to him having an easier time removing his biases against Gimli. In Fellowship, he was only aggressive against dwarves because of history he learnt, but never really had the chance to interact with them before. In other instances, you can see his childlike wonder at exploring new places, especially when they were in Fangorn.
also fun fact: Stephen Colbert, who is probably THE biggest Tolkien fan has helped people on set of both films on how the orcs should look, sound, and talk.
They don’t have anything in the book about Sauron. The ring was merely a trinket bilbo found but they do well in incorporating that for the LOTR. The big reveal is pretty cool. Even as a book purist, these movies have moments of awesome.
Well, the books kinda do have sauron, just not directly mentioned in the hobbit. Gandalf mentions the necromancer before the dwarves and bilbo enter mirkwood, and in other tolkien’s work it is told that the white council banished sauron from dol guldur to mordor (although dol guldur remained an evil place)

Whoever had the idea of Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug needs a medal right this second.
We need to see him in more of these roles! His voice is perfect for it!
There was a great meme when the movie came out with a picture of Smaug on his treasure. It talked about the cost of the movie. It said the budget was so high because of Benedict. Paying the wizard to transform him into a dragon was cheap, but they blew most of the budget bribing him to accept being turned back into a human.
The behind the scenes is even better because it’s just Benedict crawling around in a motion capture suit lmfao

Hey if it isn't the big big bad of Middle Earth, Melkor the mightiest of the Valar, the Lord of Discord, Bringer of misery, Morgoth himself.

Great comment thank you
Those spiders are actually the children of shelob. Shelob herself is actually the child of an ungodly powerful being called Ungoliant. They seem to become less powerful with each generation.
I always remember the line from LOTR: "last child of Ungoliant, sent to trouble an unhappy world."
@@septegram its so funny how op ungoliant was, if she was alive she would eat sauron in like 2 seconds and inhale smaug like an animal cracker
Even Morgoth feared Ungoliant
Everything becomes less powerful as the generations pass. It's a major theme of Tolkien. Sauron isn't as powerful as Morgoth, the spiders grow weaker and smaller, magic leaves Middle-Earth, the Elves leave as well.
With every age power and magic diminishes and in the end there will only be the mundane world of Man

When Bilbo said that he found his courage instead of telling Gandalf he found the ring it was the very start of the ring starting to corrupt him

@@pickleboy6059 The White Gems of Lasgalen aren’t mithril
(He was not necessarily larger than the towers, though)
The towers of Thangorodrim are estimated to be approximately 35,000 feet tall, and 5 miles wide, according Karen Wynn Fonstad's "The Atlas of Middle-Earth", if her illustrations are drawn to scale.
So many people don’t know this and it paints him as evil, rather than the complex character that he is
@@emkalinaand let's not forget that Elves are immortal. By chosing to fight they do not just risk a human lifespan, they risk eternity. So of course they are more hesitant for risking eternity is a way higher bar than risking a few centuries
And when Bilbo retired to Rivendell, the Elven smiths engraved the blade with:

Technically if we are going by the movies, Frodo snatched it from him rather than Sam handed it over...
@@VW20-bq9in True. I like that they made Sam had that look too, it was like he was also reluctant to give it back. Frodo however, was familiar with the ring's pull and he immediately recognized it in Sam, so...yah he snatched it.

I've very rarely seen ANYONE pick up on the fact that Bilbo can understand the spiders while wearing the Ring. Because that's exactly how it works in the books.
Fun fact:
Dragon sickness, also known as Gold sickness is a type of sickness that is caused by large amounts of treasure, particularly treasure hoarded by dragons.

From what I've read from others, Dragon Sickness isn't really what the film portrays.

It's been some time from when I read the fellowship of the ring but doesn't Gandalf says to frodo go use Mr.Underhill?
About the differences in story telling between Lord of the Rings and Hobbit: remember the Hobbit is written by Bilbo und the Lord of the Rings by Frodo. Different story tellers - different story telling.
Amazing point
"Ishkh khakfe andu null"
The dwarvish insult is quite difficult to translate as The Professor didn't fully complete Khuzdul, the dwarvish language. Closest translation is "to pour my excrement upon your head" hahaha. I love how childish the dorfs can be at times.
Compare that with what Gimli says to the Elves in Lothlorien: "Ishkhaqwi ai durugnul!" (I spit upon your grave!)
That Sauron's revelation made me scream at the theater. Man i loved that scene and the flame eye with Sauron in the middle...
Love you are exploring all of the films! Nothing compares to the origional trilogy but these have their own place in the story telling of middle earth.
We have been having such a great time with these thus far, and honestly these movies stand on their own two feet, which is tough to accomplish after such an amazing trilogy with LOTR.
@@OfficialMediaKnightsTheir own two little hairy feet? 😊
@@OfficialMediaKnights The fact you're watching the Extended Versions help - they add a lot more substance to the movies.
Benedict cumberbatch did such an amazing job as Smaug in this movie!! 🎉😊
It’s crazy to me that smaug is one of the smallest dragons of middle earth. Like he’s a baby compared to the ones in the second age
1:33 "Bilbo was the only one who willingly gave up the Ring"
Sam: Am I a joke to you?
Boromir: 😭
I'm sick at home while it is warm outside during 4 days of holidays. Thanks for giving me some good comforting entertainment
😂😂
And make the drink Diet...
15:40 "Another hobbit meal..." - like a spider's happy meal! 🤣🤣😂😂
All I can think about when Legolas gets a nose bleed after fighting the orcs is the guy from Dodgeball lol. "Nobody makes me bleeding my own blood!" Lol
At least Bolg didn't (gasp!) mess up his hair!
Same.
Luke Evans been cast in this series is truly pure genius he fits this franchise to a tee
I love it.
in the book we didn't know about the rings of power or sauron. bilbo was using the ring as often as he could and it have no drawbacks except of making him a little bit secretive about founding it
When Smaug says "my wings" with the shake in his voice is so good, Benedict did an amazing job as both Smaug and the Necromancer.
I loved the reaction! Imagine to wait one year for the third movie on the theatre. I hope you don't make us wait too much for the next movie 🙏
The worst thing on this story is that I grew fond of Balin... We all know what was his end...
The river action scene was an absolute chef's kiss
We still want that "Lord of the Rings" theme park!
@@OfficialMediaKnightsplease same. Been praying for that since forever. We need it😫
Haha I kind of hate the over CGI’d video game action thing but it doesn’t bother me too much anymore.
I love how you repeated her words back about deflecting the knife 😂 clever
I can tell you this much, they absolutely used a lot of the dialog from the books for Smaug's dialog.
the first time i learned that BENEDICT MF CUMBERBATCH was the voice of Smaug, i lost my mind.
"If you're referring to the incident with the Dragon, I was barely involved. All I did was give your uncle a little nudge out of the door."
-Gandalf
Thandrial is attached to thise jewels because they belonged to his wife snd is all he has left to remind him of her.
Benedict Cumberbatch did the voice and motion capture acting for Smaug the Dragon.
The animators didn't use his mocap data; they just used him as a visual reference.
@@aleatharhea I Stand corrected. But i did see video of him doing a motion capture session on RUclips.
Cheers!
"For my last breath maybe you can give me something a little bit more comfy for my head than some fu**ing walnuts?" :)
NGL i NEVER watched LOTR or hobbit
but because you guys are reacting to these i had to watch those movies 😂before i watch reactions
and yes benedict the mighty penguin guy is absolutely the best
I was on the same boat till very recently! Glad you got to watch all of these phenomenal movies 😄
This is the first movie i saw twice in the theaters. One of my favorite experiences in the movies honestly. To the point where I was counting the days for the trailer for the next one. And yeah.
Love this movie. Peter Jackson brought his A game in this one in terms of action and a level of danger you feel for the characters.
I’m literally watching one of your guys old videos (Pulp Fiction) and you release this one. The more content the merrier. Cheers guys.
Haha thank you, hope you enjoy!!
Smaug is one of the best characters in all 6 movies. He is so polite and badass, hoped always to see more of him.
I have been looking forward to this SO much! Found you a couple months back and cant stop watching your content. You are so genuine and come with the best reactions I have ever watched. I love the people you seem to be.
You seem like the type of people i would love to hang out and have a chat with. ❤
Keep doing what you are doing. You are amazing ❤

Tack så mycket!! We are so grateful and happy to have awesome people like you being so kind and lovely in our comment section - you really made our day!!
They are so awesome!
Guys im 38 years old, so i normally find stupid watching someones reaction, i feel too old for this kinda shit but weirdly i really enjoy watching these movies i've watched years ago with u again. Your perspective and comments is way more clever then an average reaction channel duos. love u. cheers from Turkey.
The eye of Smaug looks like the eye of Sauron :)
