When purchasing and aftermarket power supply for a turntable, what are the things you should watch for and what makes a good one or bad one? Have a question you want to ask Paul?
I have finished my memoir! You can go read it now: www.amazon.com... It's called 99% True and it is chock full of adventures, debauchery, struggles, heartwarming stories, triumphs and failures, great belly laughs, and a peek inside the high-end audio industry you've never known before.
I plan a few surprises for early adopters, so go to www.paulmcgowa... and add your name to the list of interested readers. There's an entire gallery of never before seen photos too.

    2 points.
I use an outboard stepdown transformer (240-120V Australia) like a naim armageddon for LP12 for my Thorens TD-160 super - lowers the noise floor significantly.
Also, when I was a boy, I used to call someone neither male or female a "middlesex"!

Most of the turntable motors run on AC, but benefit greatly by the same regeneration techniques used in the PS Power Plants. Turn the existing AC to DC, regenerate a very clean and stable AC to run the turntable.

Paul, for dac or turntable, what is the difference using a switched power supply like a computer or a linear analogic power supply, even from an USB cable...? :)

I drive my 1980 Oracle TT with a PS300 regenerator. The belt is almost impossible to change to 45RPM so I just change the frequency to 81Hz. PS Audio has dropped his great feature.

however the more water there is the more pressure and flow there is.
if you ever take the lid off the toilet tank and watch as you flush you will notice as the tank empties the slower the tank empties as it get to the end.
the frequency is only an issue on older ac powered turntables that uses an ac motor.
the newer turntables use a dc motor so their speed is controlled often by a small board built into the motor.

The power comes from the gravitational potential of the water column, ie, the height, not from the volume as such.

An external power supply for turntables with ac motors is a must if you are fed up with flipping it over and switching the belt to a different part of the platter's underside everytime you switch from playing a 33 1/3 rpm LP to a 45 rpm record - or 88 rpm shellacs if you are lucky enough to own one. Much more convenient to flip the power suppply's speed selector switch.

When a power supply is engineered it’s more meaningful to spend the component cost budget on an excellent low noise/ripple design than a design that can deliver much more power than will ever be needed. A too big power supply is a bit like putting a truck engine in your car.

    • @QoraxAudio
      @QoraxAudio 4 года назад

Or just use a traditional linear non-switching power supply. Some common mode filtering on the DC output will do the job.

Some are AC. Some are DC. Some are servo-controlled, which can be based on either AC or DC.
To illustrate the specific point I was making, I want you to get ahold of
a plain (two-terminal) 12 volt DC motor from an old turntable or tape deck.
Connect the motor to a source of 6 to 12 volts DC.
Run it a while, then reverse the connections. What happens?
      You don't have to respond.
