On a PS2 pressing the square button with a small amount of pressure allowed you to aim, and then fully pressing square made you fire, you could also gently release square to put the firearm down without firing (for when you wanted to interigate/holdup someone) On a PS3, PS4 or PS5 pressing square in any fashion just makes you empty the magazine...

    I had a NeGcon back in the day. They weren't a high end item - you could find them in any EB store. I don't remember the exact MSRP sorry but I would say about 40-50 bucks? They actually weren't as good as you would think. Ridge Racer et al were all designed to play well with standard non analog controllers. So by playing with a Negcon I actually found it harder to drive because now I had to do a full rotation movement to do a hard turn rather than tap a button. It ended up being kind of a gimmick and I guess that's why the design never took off. Still was a very innovative idea for its time though.

    • @papaquonis
      @papaquonis 4 месяца назад +8

      I disagree entirely. If you really spent time honing your skills on the Negcon (as I did), it was FAR superior to the standard controller. It was better than the Dual Shock as well.

      @@Afrotechmods It's a bit like the really advanced racing games. You start by driving the regular cars in default config, but with time you start getting frustrated as the top gamers post amazing times and you can't get anywhere near those times. So you start screwing around with individual suspension adjustment for each wheel, adjust the pressure in each wheel depending on the track, the surface and the weather, change the gears, you generally tweak everything and hey presto, you suck just as bad. Then you finally realize that the top gamers doesn't have hundreds of hours in the game but thousands. And they document everything every single thing analyzing the results. And finally you realize that you have a real life, not only several thousand hours to spend on a advanced game claiming to be a simulator.
      Been there. The advanced games trying to simulate everything are interesting but far from easy. Sometimes an arcade racer can be more fun, especially when playing with friends who also have a real life. Same with controllers the advanced controllers are nice, no joke. But they also tend to be real expensive and so advanced that if you don't plan to put at least a thousand hours into a very good simulator/game they are way overkill. And for the arcade racer they might even be worse than a control pad.
      Get what controller and game/simulator you want. But don't think that a better (more expensive) controller will automatically make you a better gamer.

    • @Randomii666
      @Randomii666 4 месяца назад +1

      Imo the NeG is the superior option for almost every game that supports it.
      It'll take a little while to rewire your brain to stop thinking about it as a PS controller, and to treat it more like an RC car controller.
      It's not always my first choise of controller, but i've gotten much faster times on all games i've tried it on.
      Though, there is one game i would never play without the NeG, that being Ridge Racer Type 4. That game works absolutely flawless with it, and seeing how badly they nerfed the controls on regular controllers, no thank you. If i can't use a NeG, i'm not playing R4

  • @slimydroid
    @slimydroid 4 месяца назад +12

    For the negcon, i found that if you operated it like you were holding a steering wheel, it would twist correctly for the amount you were turning the 'wheel'. @@MR-vg7yn They do have some more epxsive models, but I bought one for £50 and it's great. £10 more than other brands that haven't been very good at all, for a fully functioning product. I could be wrong overall though, since I only have one graphics tablet and don't constantly change out or peer at other models and brands. I bought one, it was cheap, and it works

    I had the p5 glove when I was a kid, I actually had a great experience with it!!! was pretty cool at the time to be able to hold 3 fingers closed (shape your hand like a gun) then tilt my hand left or right to peek around corners and just "pull the trigger". Also there was a game called Black and White that worked very well with the glove, was designed for it as far as I know, completely gesture controlled god game, made sense since you controlled a glove on the screen. The glove worked a lot more consistent for me than it seems it has for you lol

    The best part of the NeGcon is that it was the defacto standard for racing games. So even if you never owned one, if you ever bought a PSX steering wheel or used the "Steering Wheel" switch on a controller adapter, it was likely using the NeGcon protocol.
    Namco/Taito also used that protocol to make a paddle control for old pong-style games on Namco Museum and even Taito's Puchi Carat.

    I still have my 2 Negcon controllers from the PS1 days. There was a bit of a learning curve, but Linus is right, once you got used to it, it was good. Really, really good in fact. None of my friends had a chance of beating me in racing games, even when the Dual Analog/Dual Shock controllers were released. It was shockingly accurate in properly optimised games like Wipeout, Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo etc. And that dead zone could be customized, at least in some games.

    Fine choice on the NeGcon, its the finest controller for the classic Wipeout series on the PS, specially XL and 3, records were made with that controller that haven't been surpassed even with analog sticks and other devices that appeared later, i even started buying a few of them at ridiculously low prices because there wasn't that much of a demand outside of japan.
    Besides the finer control and way more stable (the analog sticks are not very), the fact that you can separate the steering from the nose pitch up and down was key on those games, and the wide range of precise reactions (you could move a millimeter or flick to the steering cap with relative precision, if you set the sensitivity and end of steering way before the end of the twist).
    Its my favorite "unorthodox" controller yet.
