  • Wondering how to use Instant Pot as a slow cooker? You can but just keep in mind that Instant Pot is running about 30-50 degrees F lower on Slow Cook function than regular Slow Cooker. For example, Low on Instant Pot is like Keep Warm on Slow Cooker appliance.
    Therefore, please use this table to convert Slow Cooker recipe cooking time to Instant Pot - Slow Cooker:
    Instant Pot Low = Slow Cooker Keep Warm
    Instant Pot Normal = Slow Cooker Low
    Instant Pot High = Slow Cooker High
    I highly recommend to add extra 15 mins to every hour of cooking time indicated in Slow Cooker recipe when cooking on High in Instant Pot-Slow Cooker.

    I am truly obsessed with my Instant Pot. If you visit my blog ifoodreal.com you will see I post 1-3 Healthy Instant Pot recipes per week. It saves me so much time to put dinner on the table in less than 15 minutes active cooking time.
    I own 2 Instant Pots and 1 Cosori. The one you see in this video is 6 Quart Instant Pot Lux amzn.to/2Z99gUY. I also have 8 quart Instant Pot DUO amzn.to/2IAEoJr which is good for larger recipes with leftovers like soups and stews. And to make yogurt.

    Slow cooking is useful for when you go to work or will be out for long. You come back to a “just done” meal, instead of just keep it on “warm” for 8 hrs, thats why its a useful tool that a lot of people use

    Another to answer your question: I live in a VERY small space and I can only have either a slow cooker OR an instant pot. I don’t have the space for both, and the instant pot won, since it has both functions. So obviously I want to be able to use both when necessary. Thanks for the video!

    1) Slow cook is fun 2) For people who need to work and just eat right after come home without chopping, cutting etc. 3) 2 in 1 function save kitchen space and money. 4) Why not

    Just because I hadn’t put my Instant Pot away after Christmas Day and I was getting food fatigue, I threw all the leftover meaty turkey bones into my IP. I added the left over turkey gravy, a chopped onion, a few cloves of garlic, a few small carrots, a can of chicken broth, cup of water, and 3 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. I set my IP on slow cook medium for 8 hours. This was about midnight. I could smell it cooking all through the night and it was wonderful. By the time I got up in the AM, it was done to perfection, and unbelievably delicious. I mean unbelievable! I became a believer. Ever since then I am looking for slow cook recipes for my IP and coming up pretty much zero. I love the versatility of the IP over a slow cooker. I now believe the IP can do anything. I have the Ultra, so even though I have a Joule for sous vide, I am going to try sous vide on my IP. Please I need recipes, anyone?

    This illustrates one of the things I just don't "get" about InstantPots. They sell them as this magical device that pressure cooks and slow cooks...but it's actually not a very good slow cooker? So basically it's just an electric pressure cooker? I've cooked with pressure cookers for years and as best as I can tell, InstantPot simply found a way to rebrand old technology by slapping on a few new buttons. When people talk about how miraculous it is, I always end up thinking, "That's just what pressure cookers do. You could have been doing this all your life in a pressure cooker."

Anyway, trying to learn to just use it now that the pressure cooking feature is gone for me 😔

    • @VickiTakacs.
      @VickiTakacs. 3 года назад +3

      Kami. I had the same issue. You see that little silver knob thing down in the hole next to the vent knob? You need that thing to pop up when it gets hot enough in there. That is what seals it off. I was banging on the lid to get that thing to pop up. That worked but you have to stand there until you hear it whistling and trying to come up. Then I finally read that adding a tablespoon of water to the 1 cup would work and it does. Just eyeball it. That little bit of extra water bumps up the steam just enough but in no way affects your cooking. Both of these things worked for me so hopefully one will work for you. Make sure your venting knob is turned to close.

    The reason to use instant pot as a slow cooker is simple. You can do it all in one pot. As example, I saute onions and meat and then change to slow cooker for chili!
    I also make spaghetti squash with meat/tomato sauce. I pressure cook the spaghetti squash and put it aside. Then I saute onions and meat. Then I slow cook the sauce (after adding other ingredients). This uses 3 different functions in one pot! Perfect!!

    All the newer IP's now have a setting for yogurt. The bad thing about IP is that you do not know what the temperature is that you are cooking. With my old IP Duo, I can set it for Slow Cooker, but when I use the method in this video to change from low to med or to high, it changes the time . I don't understand how yours is able to do this using the + or - button after you set the time. You use the + or - for the time. How does it know you are talking of cooking it at low med or high? I NEED TO PUT MY NON-DAIRY POTATO YOGURT AT AROUND 100 DEGREES.

    So the key thing is reduction. And rapid reduction cannot be achieved well with pressure cooking. You would want to use it as a slow cooker because some broths and recipes require additional boil time, i.e. pork broth requires 2 h of pressure cooking and couple of hours of boiling to emulsify gelatin properly, which can't be achieved with pressure cooking.

    I will tell you THIS.......I will NEVER use my Instant Pot as a slow cooker again. Cooking with it as a pressure cooker it's the GREATEST KITCHEN APPLIANCE EVER......but as a slow cooker.....IT SUCKS. I put a 2lb beef roast on Slow Cook "MEDIUM". 10 hrs later........NOT COOKED. TOUGHER THAN LEATHER. And this was NOT a cheap cut of meat. It was a high quality roast. I had to pressure cook it to finish it. I thought this was just a ONE TIME THING........NOPE.....tried again a week later with a Pork shoulder roast. SAME THING....it DID NOT FINISH in 8 HOURS..!! When I use a "regular" slow cooker, 6 hrs on LOW and all was perfect. If this thing can't slow cook a chunk of meat in 10 HOURS.....this setting/feature is useless. HOWEVER.......all other functions of my Instant Pot are TERRIFIC..!!!!

    I have a slow cooker/crock pot and I have an Instant Pot, both 6 quarts. Problem I have sometimes is 6 quarts isn't big enough for a bone in pork butt or other large meat cuts. So, I'll cut the large meat in half and use both.

    The only advantage the Instant Pot has over a Crockpot is speed. Meals come out tasting much better in a slow cooking crockpot in my opinion. Try your favorite beef stew recipe in both and see for yourself.

    After reading and watching videoes, I aborted my attempt to use the slow cooker function on my Instant Pot. I only saw negative experiences. However, I had a batch started in the Instant Pot and another in a regular crockpot. They were both set on high. I turned the Keep Warm setting off. Comparing the batches, it seemed the Instant Pot was hotter and the meat was more cooked after an hour. I transferred to another crock pot because I’m having family over for dinner and didn’t want to ruin it. Has anyone had positive slow cooker experiences with the Instant Pot? I have the Duo model.

    • @monie1527
      @monie1527 3 года назад +5

      YES. Although I've made some costly mistakes. Just remember low (on your instant pot is "keep warm") and medium is low & high is high. So basically, I sear my protein and generally cook on high checking several times.

    Slow cooker cooking is much more flavorful than pressure cooking in my opinion. There are also many other reasons to use the slow cooker option. It is smart of InstantPot to include this function bc many people are buying more multifunction appliances to save space or clutter. Therefore, I use the slow cooker function more often. That being said, this lady is annoying and I did not complete the video.... #condescendingattitude.

    All slow cooker cookbook recipes for the past 45 years have called for 6 to 8 hours on Low or 8 to 10 hours on high. The slow cookers were meant to cook all day SAFELY so one could go to work and come home to a meal. The slow cookers manufactured the last few years are waayy to high in temperature and are basically boiling your food. Yuck. Boiled food is not the same as slow cooked. Most people cannot store both a slow cooker and an instant pot. I bought my instant pot in hopes of getting rid of the slow cooker but I have not yet tried the slow cook method on instant pot. The crock pot is useless because even on low, your food is boiled in 4 hours.

    Why not just slow cook custom and set it to aprox 60-70 C?
    Beef should ideally only get litle bit over 60 C to get perfect rare to medium rare, and slowcook 12-36hrs i think to get: fall of bone consistency.
    "Slow cooking" 6hrs on high sounds so WRONG.
    Its also weird that both my microwave and it seems instant pot "slow cooking"-menues have to hogh temperature.
    It seems like in both machines i need to use "keep warm: custom: 62 C - 70C to ACTUALLY get CORRECT IDEAL slow cooking for beef;)
    But i get that ppl may not want to wait 24hrs fpr their meat.
    Just as supermarkets nowdays cheapout and sell you warm "slow cooked" ribs... which only been "slowcooked" 3 hrs, and are dry and not so juicy.
