Hi! 😁Just popping in here to share some more games that have been mentioned to me/I found since this video went up: -The Midnight Walk was very recently announced! -Hylics 1 + 2 -Platypus Reclayed -Scarlet Deer Inn -Feltopia -Clayfighter
The original release of Coraline was the last time I went to a cinema. I hate them, but I really wanted to see it in 3D and support stop-motion. Worth it.
Stop motion has to be the epitome of art for art's sake among animation styles. It's so difficult to get right, so time consuming, and so niche that you have to be utterly devoted to your work to pull it off. Yet it's so foundational to film history thanks to geniuses like Ray Harryhausen (just imagine what a nightmare it must have been to choreograph and sync up the skeleton fight scene in Jason and the Argonauts) that I can't picture it ever disappearing entirely. It may not get big studios attached very often, but there's always going to be someone fascinated enough by stop motion to carry it forward. Also, I would like to express my profound jealousy that UK kids got so many stop motion shows back in the day and all we had here when I was the same age was annual airings of Nightmare Before Christmas and the Rankin-Bass Christmas specials.
Wow this video has less than 1000 views, I really expected higher from such a high quality video. Stop motion and drawn animation NEEDS to be brought back . Love the video ❤
@@irislyoko yeah I'm Aussie so we'd get different things imported (which is even stranger considering we get stuff delayed) but it's probably because gumby was on the ABC and that's basically what everyone had at minimum back then, so I guess it'd be higher demand because of the ABC broadcasting it
Amazing! :') I've actually been learning Norwegian recently so it made it an extra joy to experience. I would love to talk about the film more in a video sometime!
There is a stop motion animated series for streaming service max called Frankelda’s book of spooks. This series is amazing anthology series which the show originates from Mexico plus there’s a movie coming up Frankelda and the Prince of spooks
I did catch a glimpse of that series when I was doing some research!! It's definitely on my list to watch :) I didn't know there's a movie coming up though, which is exciting - thank you for sharing :D
i love stop motion so much!! i grew up watching pingu everyday as a kid 🥹 if you think about it, it was probably the first contact a whole generation of kids had with stop motion
I’ve been on a huge Rankin/Bass kick lately and I absolutely adore the stop motion style that they do for their specials. They were animated in Japan, which is probably why I get a huge kick out of them. It does make me sad that we don’t really have a dedicated studio that make stop motion holiday specials anymore. But they just about air here in the United States every Christmas season so they’re still apart of our lives thankfully (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer being the most popular one obviously).
the British clay-mation style always kinda creeped me out, but one of my favorite movies as a kid is Kubo And The Two Strings, another Laika movie. Edit: by British clay-mation I mainly mean Shaun The Sheep and Wallace and Gromit.
As a fellow Brit it's cool to see mentioned a lot of the tv shows I grew up with, a lot that my parents did too. I've had experiences with people which told me they were from my parents' generation when I mention Camberwick Green and they immediately sing out the firemen's tune "Pugh, Pugh, Barney Mcgrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub" on the spot 🤣 Also, there was a time when my folks were away for a few days and I got a text message from my Dad saying "BAGPUSS" before he could send me a picture of the original Bagpuss puppets and props. Turns out the Museum they were visiting had them on display and my Dad (who had twisted his ankle earlier) ran up the stairs to see them. He was super excited about the chocolate biscuit factory in particular, it's his favourite episode Really shows how much stop-motion media has had an impact on mulitple generations, me included (the tv show Old Bear and Friends was one of my favourites as a kid and I'm very much obsessed with The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists so it was cool to see it mentioned too) I'm going to have to seek out The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix now as I've never heard of it before, so thank you for introducing it! Just like stop-motion animators of the craft your passion for stop-motion really enthuses the viewer into seeking out more. I'm definitely subscribing!
Was great seeing Coraline in cinema. So cool to see it on the big screen! Didn't expect to see butt ugly martians to appear in the video! I'm sure you probably seen it, but Hidari is a insanely well done stop motion that shows how cool action scenes can be done in stop motion!
It's awesome that you saw Coraline in the cinema, too!! And Butt ugly martians is so entertaining ahaha :') Oooh I recognise the name Hidari but I don't think I've ever actually seen it properly! I'll make sure to check it out asap :D
@@irislyoko Yeah seeing it in cinema, along with the little bit at the end where the showed some of the behind the scenes on stop motion was great! Hidari is free to see on RUclips so thankfully easy to see!
on the topic of stop motion video games, there's also hylics and hylics 2 by mason lindroth which have a very unique style that utilizes stop motion and clay a lot! this video was great btw, it's cool seeing love for stop motion.
oooh yes!! I love the style of those games so much! I completely forgot to mention them so thank you for sharing and also thank you for the kind words :D
It hasn't come out yet but Scarlet deer inn is a game where all the characters are embroidered. There's also a RUclipsr, worthikids, who has a few cgi animations but look just like stop motion
One of my favourites is "The Tower" or "Tarnet" directed by Mats Grorud about a little palestinian girl in a lebanese refugee camp. Insanely relevant of course, but also just so beautiful and sweet and caring. There's also in fact a whole scene of Lego/brickfilm-Animation on RUclips, quite obscure but some gems. Has the weirdest stuff like "WHERE IS MY DOG PIKO?!?!?!" by Sonjira and the sweetest like "Trans Youth USA" by Brickstorming. Proud to call myself part of that community :) As I am also working on a stop motion feature for some years right now, it was quite fun to see all those different styles and ideas combined here! Sure hope stop motion stays... With recent hits and bigger projects like Guillermo del Toros Pinocchio, it might even get a bit more popular for once ^^
I honestly hate it when people say that “Stop Motion” is creepy when so much time and effort is put into it, it’s a medium I’ve always appreciated ever since I was young.
The works of Harryhausen or O’Brien are so good, that even to this day, monster fans will still sing their praises about their work on many movies Also I love the stop motion from Primal Rage, it has such a classic feel
I LOVE stop motion, and this video is so incredibly well made. I have made so many lists of the stuff you showed, god it really is such a wonderful thing and you've presented it so fantastically here. I love this youtuber @booshkie who makes lovely stop motions, and also the adventure time episode done in stop motion has a special place in my heart. Thank you for this video!!!
When i was younger, i never really cared what animation style was used but now im older i have seen a few stop motipn films i missed when i was younger and am absolutely loving and apprecting the effort and lpve that go in to them!
This is brilliant! Great editing and a fascinating topic. Absolutely subbed. Though the mention of a Domo-kun bag made me have flashbacks to GaiaOnline and the ancient days of fandom.
I'm obsessed with moral orel right now so this video landed on my feed; i've had very few touch points with stop motion up to this point. as much as i was fascinated by the concept of stop motion while watching the show, i haven't really looked into other works or the behind the scenes of the medium that much. i feel like there is so much to explore!!! Yippieee
that's amazing!! there's definitely a whole world of stop motion out there :) I hope you find as much joy out of it as I do! (also you've reminded me that I need to watch more Moral Orel asap!)
it literally won't ever, it's a technique that is impossible to erase because that would require a racing literally every physical Doll, Puppet, Figure or anything of the sort.
Wonderful assessment of this timeless art form. All my favorites are present and accounted for. If you haven't already, I recommend seeking out some paper cutout animation. There aren't too many noteworthy examples, the only ones that come to mind are The Adventures of Prince Achmed (THE first fully-animated feature ever, predating Snow White by 11 years), the 1983 movie Twice Upon A Time, Terry Gilliam's animations for Monty Python's Flying Circus and the original South Park shorts, but they show that stop-motion can be made with something other than 3-dimensional puppets.
When it comes to stop motion in video games, something I dont think we talk about enough is that the orginal Doom (really more Doom II) is... kinda stop motion? Some of the enemy sprites (most of the ones inteoduced in Doom II) are physical sculptures that were photographed, though from the research I've done, I can't tell for sure whether they were animated in camera or not.
I can't believe I saw this film when it came out in theatres and how I wasn't scared of it, because 15 years later I'm thinkign wth was wrong with kid me LOL
ahaha same here tbh! I never found it that scary, just really cool and atmospheric :') I think I didn't quite understand how dark it was at the time lol
Your a very talented historian and theorist keep it up please concise with exceeding breavity. I too am british (1992) I cannot express my love and fascination with animation, most ppl think I'm weird or depraved being a grown man with this perpensity for this avant-garde artform. Movement is a language a captivating one. We are bipedal and we are designed for locomation.
Great video! Love stop motion, Magic Roundabout and The Herbs are two of my favourite shows plus Wallace & Grommit and Shaun the Sheep of course. One you didnt mention that I also liked was a series called Gogs about a family of cavemen (and women) 🙂
I used to do StopMotion back at school but it was kind of crap. But still fun to watch. A couple of people even asked me if I did some new stuff over the holidays... xD
I HIGLY recomend the newer Flåklypa (pinchcliff)- movies as well. They are claymotion, and very beautifull. There are one where they go to the moon in a homemade spaceship, and another one where they try to get a cheese from one place to the other. It is very fun to see the different machienes Reodor Felgen makes.
I love stop-motion/Claymation! Bob The Builder is super nostalgic, Aardman's films and shorts are amazing, and Cosgrove Hall has made a ton of fantastic stop-motion shows, especially The Wind In The Willows and Engie Benjy. My personal favorite Stop-Motion/Claymation would have to be the works of Will Vinton, especially his mascot works like the California Raisins and Domino's Pizza's The Noid. Will Vinton's Claymation Christmas Celebration is PEAK holiday special. What Phil Knight did to Will Vinton angers me so much to the point where I REFUSE to watch any of Laika's movies.
Like any business, as soon as the means of movie production become faster and cheaper, the people with money are going to pivot to that. There is always going to be an audience for stop-motion and any movie made with a low- to mid-tech process like it, but they'll only get made if there's a guarantee that the audience is going to show up for it, because, again, the goal of any business is to get people to pay for what you've made.
Stop motion has the potential to become the 2d pixel art indie game of the movie world when movie makers don't want to create what people want the people Will do it instead
You know I’m an animator because when I heard 2-6 seconds a week I went “that’s so much” help why did I choose this to be my major (/j I love animation it’s so fun, you just need to be a special brand of crazy to do it) (Edit- oh shit never hood was mentioned- my dad did concept art but cut ties with his work cuz the creator turned into a psycho)
Part of why it is dying is because of how Laika treats their animators. While I didn't want to believe that was true, doing a deep dive on Laika's business practices and how it was formed was eye-opening and at the same time, sickening. While you may love Coraline and Paranorman, Laika isn't doing us any favors. Treating their employees as dispensable as abusing them is the true reason why we're losing stop motion. Much of this information began leaking online about three years ago. While I'd like to commend this video for your enjoyment of stop motion... There's so much more to know, especially the darker sides. Those who toil in this particular type of animation are often abused. Please, do not support Laika. Support other film studios that nurture and foster healthy relationships with their animators in such a difficult type of animation. Laika is killing the art and if they continue to act like this, stop motion won't be able to thrive. Maybe Laika can right the ship but until they know we can't stand for this, they'll keep doing it. And we might lose this artform all in the name of profits.

Stop motion and horror are a match made in heaven!

some great media suggestion in there, thanks!
