According to Wikipedia this is Pat Smear's first live performance with the band. He really fit in like a glove, I don't notice much difference from earlier recordings of these songs. I remember being a fan back then, it was like one day the guy was just there and it was like... "ok cool". There was no big to do about it or anything, they were just a quartet from that point.
totally disagree, Pat Smear did not fit in well with them at all- his vibes did not mix with the band at all, his style of playing etc. Nothing against Pat , I am a fan of his - (the Germs) but Pat was just a flamboyant shoe pony for them that was quite awkward.
Apparently they had not yet decided that he should sing during the chorus of HSB. Check out later performances of that song, especially Live and Loud, he adds a lot with very few words.

I feel lucky for lots of things in life, but the absolute number 1 is being alive during this time in history. I was 18 when they did this performance. It’s hard to explain to people that weren’t around what it was like to be alive and experience the parabolic shift of music and culture at the time. And this band led the charge. 🫶🏼
Thank you so much for posting this. No matter what genre of music Nirvana is referred to, they were at their core 100% hard and very heavy rock. As much as I loved Nirvana before Pat came on, there is no doubt that Pat elevated that band to a whole other level. Nirvana with two guitar players and Pat was definitely the right choice was so bad ass and my favorite version of Nirvana for sure. Just imho, if Kurt didn't leave us and got help, the band would have gone on with Pat to make another full length original material studio album, it would have been super epic.

It’s one of Kurt’s Mosrites, restrung for right handed players. Story goes after Pat joined Nirvana he turned up to SNL with a real flashy and shiny guitar, and the band said “you can’t play that”. So they quickly got one of Kurt’s Mosrites and restrung it.
