Great message RMS. I dont agree with every view you have but as a man of freedom you are right about our freedoms being trampled every day. Too bad convenience has made us forfeit or freedoms.
Am I misinterpreting that Stallman's basic point here is: "we" -- the putative free populace who all program their own machines -- have already lost? Of *course* Europe followed the US, what did anyone expect? It *is* about money, and the "revolution" surely depends on people rejecting monetary reward. As long as there's money to be made in software, that's going to be sisyphean. Thanks for the tip about Craig Murray's book though, didn't know about that one.
Ouch. A lack of software patents was one of Europe's last hopes to remain relevant in the technology world. I guess we'll just have to look to Asia (including, somewhat ironically, fascist China) for free computing devices.
The last part is a real issue. with all the rage about cloud, steam, what is it called mosie pro remote site storage. you are simply exposing yourself to 3rd party handling of your data, and your paying them to spy on you to boot. I have found one way to stop phone tracking. I simply setup a portable em field modulator where my phone is. I can turn it off when I need to make a call or get messages, then turn it back on to block it from reseption or transmitting. it denys at least most tracking
I'll admit, it's pretty disturbing how much data is made available for governments and corporations to track everything you do. Very Orwellian. ---Sent from my iPhone
pavh478389 Agreed. Add all Apple software to that list. It is very ironic that iOS, a system that took restrictions to levels never seen before, is also made from a once free operating system. At this point you have to ask the question whether proprietary vendors keep FOSS for their own use but intentionally give users no freedom so they can squeeze more money. My conclusion is that it is a conceptual fallacy to think that you can benefit from free software in the long term while not helping its advancement and adoption.
No... we've already won and just don't know it. Facebook, Google, Twitter et al, they all base their tech on free software. Microsoft has been fighting the move to it for years (look up "halloween documents"). It is said that most of the value created in I.T during the last 10 years has been created using it, and even Microsoft now uses it (eg. Hadoop, Linux etc...). The move to free software could happen tomorrow because it's already written eg. Diaspora* . Public awareness is nil though

We all need free os on our smartphones. Lets the kickstarter begin.

Well it has to begin somewhere don't you think?
gnu.org hasn't got as many viewer as youtube, besides he's not the one uploading it to youtube.

Please stop being ironic, INT.

The devices themselves aren't free either.
Crap! Remote servers! That's true, they hold all our personal data!

muh freedoms
Hmmm......freedom vs. cheap porn and games ....looks like people are not choosing freedom.
So?
Using RUclips to spread your message about FOSS is like using armed robbery to spread your message about gun control.
second
Paranoia Agent
That's not the point.
Crap.
