For what it's worth, the effect of "Bowser" slowly fading into Mario was pretty alright.
Also, the Mario Sketch game - as mechanically unsound as it was - was pretty adorable looking. Some kid probably put a lot of hard work into that.

For the record, not all of these are shitty. Many of the games I played during this stream and past streams were pretty cool, but this is just the name of the series for the sake of continuity on youtube.
Honestly, I may be alone in this, but I'd love to see you do a "good fangames" stream. Psycho Waluigi, Midas Machine, Abducted Toad and Revenge of the Walrus are all decent picks for such a thing. Perhaps even Toad and the Ancient Keys, but perhaps I shouldn't self-endorse. ;D
Anyway, keep up the good streamin' work!

+vinesauce I would consider putting the decent fan games in a different video series. Lumping in good fan games into a video with a title like that might offend some people.

The Purple Coin actually looked awesome
I'm not really sure why the Purple Coin was included in this compilation, it is a pretty damn good fangame.
I suspect that the people who make these compilations for Vinny include one or two good games as a "palate cleanser" of sorts, so Vinny isn't just having shit thrown in his face for two straight hours. That or they just downloaded a bunch of random games and a few gems were included by chance.

The credits of that Luigi game surprised me when i saw the credits, it was made by MechaBowser
MechaBowser used to do things for Team Fortress 2, which explains the TF2 Spy sounds for the Goombas and the TF2 ammo sound mixed in with the item box sound, and was relatively known in it's community, many years later he then went on to create A Hat In Time (which is actually pretty decent)
Knowing this and having seen what was probably one of the first games he ever made is quite a revelation

Some of the Goomba sound effects sound like they could be from South Park: The Stick of Truth.

@@Zerard To be fair, the game was made back in 2003 (googling wasn't a norm back then for kids) and the creator probably never even played dark cloud.
For the record, the Waligie games are joke games. They were made by Thunder Dragon, the creator of MFGG (Mario Fan Games Galaxy), and Psycho Waluigi, which is widely considered one of, if not, the greatest fan-game ever made.
I was actually impressed by Luigi's Game when I realized the smokey aura around Bowser was him blurring into Mario.
Vinny didn't even sound like he was having fun playing these, just pain.
He was having fun playing The Purple Coin. I downloaded it and loved Batbro.

You know what so many of these games have in common? Lots of them were clearly made using either Klik & Play, or one of Clickteam's later programs that used the same object-oriented GUI, like The Games Factory or Multimedia Fusion. I remember the specific quirks of the default platformer movement too- turning around while moving at full speed INSTANTLY moves you the opposite direction instead of decelerating, if you touch an obstacle while jumping in the air you can't move horizontally until you land, and if there's an edge of the screen you can move to, you can "wall-jump" off it by holding whatever key is Jump and mashing the direction towards it.
I also noticed the typical lazy "If player collides with enemy, decrease health by 1" programming that doesn't include invincibility time, and in Super Mario X I see Mario's fireballs are aimed in the direction of his current velocity instead of just which way he's facing.
TheBigL1 I thought it was that most of them use shift as jump but this works too

Luigi's Game is stellar with good gameplay, amazing music, and a brilliant ending.

I grew up on that cartridge! That and F-zero, StarFox and Megaman X.
I honestly never heard a single bad thing about All-Stars other than the things Vinny mentioned people have apparently said.
I think it's a fine example of a remake/remaster compilation.
It has different physics from the original SMB, so some purists might not like it, but most people love it
That Pancakes game was apparently released in 2013. Which just blows my mind that people were still unironically using that awful 2004-2005 era humor by then.
The only explanation is that the guy fell comatose in 2004, woke up in 2013, and the first thing he did was make a Mario fangame.

I have a theory for Luigi's Game
The truth is that Mario's shadow in the background was actually his soul telling Luigi to avenge as he was brutally beaten by Bowser and killed. Luigi later goes off to defeat Bowser but sadly when Bowser is defeated, Luigi couldn't live without his brother so he decided to join his brother in the sky.
Now you know the truth
The real twist is that the Mario who got beaten by bowser was an hallucination, and the guy Luigi thought was Bowser and killed, was in reality Mario.
Thats what I thought.

In Luigi's Game, the smoke around Bowser was actually Mario if you look closely enough.
I noticed it right away. It was obvious what the game maker was going for as soon as the final level's music started playing.

I can't tell what is funnier, how Vinny is able to change what he is saying mid-sentence while making it sound casual and natural.... or how nearly everything he plays has such perfect comedic timing purely by chance.
I can't believe anyone would be THAT bitchy to give All-Stars shit. The music and graphics are amazing. I wish we had those options in Mario Maker.
The only _real_ problem I had with All-Stars was the issue with Mario not rebounding off of the blocks properly after hitting them in 1 & LL. Other than that, I played it all the time.

For some reason I have difficulty conceiving "lol so random XD" material still existing this day and age.
Mushroom Pancakes development was left to collect dust for years, so it's not too much of a surprise. I actually enjoyed it but I acknowledge it tried to be a little TOO random...
You get older with every passing moment, but there will never be a shortage of edgelords that find that stuff funny.

Maybe it's just me, but with all the cynicism and vulgarity of 2024 internet and media, I think I'm starting to gain a new appreciation for "lol random xD" humor.
I don't know if I'd call it funny or clever. But at the very least, that Mushroom Pancakes game didn't seem to be made out of spite, malice, or depression.

Mario's walk cycle in Super Mario Sketch has him putting the wrong arm out when taking a step.
Out of every shitty medium I've seen with a legible walk cycle, even the worst ones get that one subtle detail right. Remarkable in that this is the first thing I've ever noticed to get that wrong.
That's how the creator walks, don't make fun of him. It's a serious condition.
That Luigi game was the most amazing game ever. It looked like ass, but it made for an emotional story.

The Purple Coin is actually... pretty fun. It's a shiny gold in a pile of turd. The one beacon of hope on an otherwise cloudy day. And... ha... wow. I actually recognize that voice in the game! Those Mario/Luigi voice clips that aren't Charles Martinet are actually a friend of mine I've known since highschool. His Mario and Luigi were pretty on point. I was actually not expecting to hear his voice show up in any of these things. Luckily, it showed up in the only good game out of this collection.

Those waligie games are actually supposed to be parodies of how mario fangames were made back in the day. So the terminal 7 inducing dialouge was intentional.

Luigi's game summary:
Luigi finally gets his own game, but it is not the quality game that Mario resides in. No matter what, Mario will always be the star in a 5 star game, and it haunts Luigi. Even after defeating Bowser and getting his reward, it is meaningless compared to what Mario usually gets.
He later commits suicide. Later on, he resurrects just to play go-kart.
Either that, or Mario died and Luigi having a psychological episode.
