SMW is pretty common for hacking mainly because the game's platforming engine is pretty lightweight and it has a ton of tools/support (level/overworld editors, sound/music manipulation tools, databases of music, objects and patches). The community is pretty novel in how far they stretch the game in some of the higher end hacks.
Those 16-bit sprites are also the sweet spot for game devs. They look decent enough by today's standards, while being a lot less demanding to work with than 32-bit. The SNES is truly the classic gaming machine.

Is he, though? All we know is he's using BizHawk, for all we know, it could just be the Snes9x core, which is most certainly not cycle-accurate. Even then, bsnes is pretty decent for old romhacks, since it has a few compatibility features that simulate the shitty emulation of ZSNES specifically for old romhacks like these. Idk if that was a thing in 2015 though, to be fair.
So... for a video called "Shitty Super Mario World Romhacks", most of them were actually pretty good, with a couple being genuinely great and even the few bad ones were more "meh" than really terrible.
This. They're really fun challenge hacks with interesting mechanics for each level. Unfortunately Vinny has no patience or taste. Because he's from new jersey.
I love how when Vinny is given a list of "Shitty" games to play, they're either just lack-luster to really good (in this case, "Just Blob" and "Hack 1/2"), but not really shitty. None of these are really shitty, at the least some of these are just meh. A lot of them look like they've had genuine effort put into them, much more than the shovelware games Vinny does, and those are full games and not mods. I feel this should be renamed from "Shitty Super Mario World Romhacks" to "Super Mario World Romhack Showcase" because I actually feel like getting some of these as opposed to avoiding them.
super mario world has too many great to amazing games so many peoples expectation are too high and will classify ok hacks as shitty, that said there are some truely awful ones out there, you just have to dig a bit.
Underway After hacking SMW, and then playing a shit ton of romhacks over the course of 3 years, I saw a lot of bad and good, and could tell the difference. Then again, Vinny doesn't know SMW inside and out like we do. Bad? These were pretty good, though they still had their shortcomings. Keytastrophe's music doesn't work on more accurate emulators, and Mario' First Adventure didn't have powerups. When I saw bad, I was thinking Er, Hammer Brother Demo 3, O Ninja Negro, and the like.
Regarding Chaos Complex initially not working: emulators normally autopatch the IPS file, which is probably why he didn't patch the file. Kinda surprising it failed.
1:06:13 to 1:06:31 Anyone here from Crispy Toast’s adaptation of The Rent is Due? Also, playing Dungeons and Dragons with your imaginary friends doesn’t count as work, Luigi.
Vinny opens a text box, reads the first half, closes it before the part that tells you that you can sprint over one-block gaps, then jumps over the gaps one at a time while complaining about how unfriendly the hack is to new players
+Scratch-O He also says not to much later that he tried doing what it said and it didn't work for him, but also admits to possibly not doing it right. If you look at that part, you can see him run back and forth a few times to make the attempt.
"The music broke because you're using the incorrect emulator." Wrong. The music broke because the creator of the hack couldn't be arsed to code the music in a way that makes it compatible on a real SNES. If it's compatible on a real SNES, it's _very_ unlikely to ever break on even shitty emulators. Unfortunately, a lot of Mario-specific ROM hacks use code that doesn't work well with anything but a specific emulator. Which sucks.
DaVince21 To be fair, the sample amount of hacks Vinesauce played in this video, two of the hacks made was made by two different people who know how to compose music. You are more likely to see other SMW hackers use custom music made by other people because most SMW hackers lack knowledge in music composition/ASM. Also keep in mind that you have music that was made before the music section of SMWCentral enforced compatibility with more accurate emulators (2012). Those who have used custom music made before 2011 and have released their game within that timeframe should be held blameless for why their hacks do not work on accurate emulators and on a real SNES. The hacks section followed suit since last year.
You make good points. There are even hacks dating back from 2004, before music hacking was even possible, and when no one really pursued accuracy as harshly as that one bsnes guy did. But _man_ do they make some noise when they do the wrong thing.
Back then, ZSNES was the only game in town. No, it wasn't accurate, but you wasn't going to get cycle accuracy on a 75MHZ Pentium 1, it was more than amazing for people back then. Yes, ZSNES is an inaccurate relic today, obsolete and utterly worthless over better emulators, same with Nesticle and Genecyst. But you are ignoring that it was more or less that or nothing back then, and because those were the main game in town, if not the only game, many tools were written with those emulators in mind, and as such, relied on exactly how the emulator worked, rather than how the actual hardware worked..... because they didn't HAVE anything that emulated how the actual hardware worked well or even have that much documentation on it at the time. ZSNES may be trash now and I would never use it again..... but it allowed me to play through all of Chrono Trigger with sound in the late 90s with a mere 75MHz Pentium 1 PC. It's ignorant to call the romhackers of the time out on this when it was all they had to work with. Notice that nobody is complaining to Kaze Emanuar that his Mario64 romhacks don't work in real hardware..... because N64 emulation today is still practically as much of a mess as the SNES was in the ZSNES days. There has only been one attempt at a cycle-accurate N64 emulator..... and it seems to be been abandoned plus can barely run games and at a worse level than current N64 emulators. Many of these SNES romhacks back then were as impressive as Kaze's Mario64 romhacks are now.
