Hi, Jason and Lorraine! It does my heart good to see you in your little truck bouncing around on your farm. Y’all are chicken whisperers. I pray your turkey count is still at 17. I pray for those little gobblers daily. Oops! You just verified the turkey count.

We like to harvest ours in 2 waves.
Take half - the Big Chonkers in the first wave. Wait 10 days to 2 weeks on the second half - The Runts & Smalls.
The extra time gives 'em a chance to catch up on some body weight ... plus gives us a break rther than one super long processing day, we've got two more leisurely days.

When I was a kid, back in 50's - 60's, my dad and grandmother never wanted a chicken bigger than 3lbs! Their fav was a 2 pounder! 🤣🤣🤣. These big chickens today are strange!!! I swear, you buy chicken today that are like turkeys!!

    • @oldwillowtree173
      @oldwillowtree173 Месяц назад +4

Yes, where I grew up in the fifties, chickens were ONLY around 2 or 3 pounds--that was normal. When I came to this country in the late 70s I was horrified at the huge size of the chickens! Way too expensive and for a family of five the small ones were quite enough--even for leftovers. And they seem to have become even bigger since then! Personally I can't even eat those Frankenstein chicken giants with the huge breasts and small legs--even the organic ones, the meat doesn't look right inside and to me they don't even taste like "real" chicken anymore!

We've done the cornish three times and each time the birds very different growth. I think possibly coming from different hatcheries. We raise heritage turkeys and chickens now even though they take longer we are always certain to have a harvest each year. We wanted to not rely on hatcheries any longer. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with others to help become more self sufficient.. Lorraine! Delicious meal !!! Happy family time.

Love seeing family come in to visit. While I do not have chickens, I think you definitely made the right decision to wait on the birds especially if they will grow several pounds in a few weeks. Yes, the feed is more but your value for each bird goes through the roof waiting if some double in size.

Have a great chicken day! 😊 In Europe , a two lb chicken fed a family of nine Lorraine. Vegetables and starch made up the remainder of the meal. 😊 Where’s the weeding crew for the greenhouse? Happy Thanksgiving 🎉❤

First, thanks for sharing your families farm life.
Question: What do you do with the chickens that get slaughtered? Your freezer or share with the class in workshop??
Next suggestion for your daughter I know usda has a yearly grant she can get for raising an animal. Non pay back it is a real grant.
Next, she's home schooling, so let her build two plots o e for enough to sell directly on the farm when you do work shops. People love farm fresh, and your daughter taking the lead will give her a leg up, too!
Sell flower bouquets, herb bowls, and other plant starts.
Take some of those blueberry cane's every year and make starts in 2 years. It starts ready to plant organic farming practices. 10-20 per start , depending on your location..
Ton of ways to maximize your workshops!! Then, people know you have extra veg/fruit farm items. And if they follow, they know how to pay attention to see your offerings!!
    Good luck

Interesting. Good job. I am finding that this year, the lesson is patience. We can't grow garden's or animals by dates...and folks are so used to doing that. I get it , but this year a lot of folks are stressing out because their gardens went in late and birds are not where they figure they should be. I figure that It will be what it will be and there is no sense stressing over it...just pivot.

My Mom and her friend used to raised White Plymouth Rocks for butchering. They were big chickens! They processed at 16 weeks but not the problems of Cornish X.
I thing they are great dual purpose birds. I have some in my laying flock and they are great layers. Big, hardy birds!
    ♥️👍😎🐓
