  • To 27 years of service.
    Here's to another 27 more.
Yes, I'm aware a few odd glitches made it in. No, they shouldn't be there.

I remember when these had manual windshield wipers. My dad took my sister and I on a ride, and for some reason, I decided that I had to flip the wiper every time we got into a station, and when I forgot to flip it, I screamed - earning a scolding from my dad.
They now have a system of advertisement boards underground which works like a flipbook. Great to see a hummingbird move for Telus.

Look at stations like Joyce or Patterson from street level. You can see triangle shaped indents on the concrete structure where the tube steel frames would of been installed. It's a mystery why they decided not to complete the roofs.

So many more trees now. I was completely surprised by that.

It would be great if Surrey had more than four skytrain stations.

Thanks for the retrospective comparison! I was wondering why I didn't see any other Trains going the opposite direction in the old footage until I watched it again and noticed that that stations hadn't opened yet (notice the yellow caution / do not enter tape on platforms). The neighbourhood surrounding Joyce-Collingwood Station, simply known as Joyce Station back in the day, was nothing more than warehouses on the south side of the tracks. The only thing recognisable was the BC Tel building!

When they put in the original Expo and the Millenium lines for the Skytrain, they were really trying to drive demand and development along the old rail corridor. All those condominiums and apartments up by Nanaimo, Joyce-Collingwood, and Metrotown owe their growth in part to the the Skytrain system.
Areas outside of the Skytrain system's direct influence probably haven't grown as much.
    ^_^

The plethora of high rise buildings that went up along the corridor is a testament to the 'build it, and they will come' ethos. The expo line carries the equivalent to ten lane freeway in people. Metro Vancouver has also doubled in size in the last 30 years from 1.3 million to about 2.5 million. All within 1000 square miles

so cool! I've been in BC almost the same period and love seeing the transformation. I also miss Eaton's and the jazz player who used to hang there every evening, filling my evening commutes with joy as I walked to Granville Station from Hotel Van.

I picked a bunch of 80's and modern music to see which would work best and that song not only worked without editing but wouldn't have any possible copyright issues.

27 years ago Metrotown did not exist, all there was at the site was the Simpson-Sears, Woodward's and a few industrial buildings it was called the Kingsway/Sussex area at the time.

So interesting, thanks for this. At first I was anticipating the Surrey portion, since that's changed so much in the last 27 years. Then I realized that portion of the line hadn't even been built yet!

Wow, I always thought the uncovered roof sections of some of the stations from Nanaimo and eastward were platform extensions, but this seems to prove me wrong. They have been there since opening day!
Now I wonder if they were a revision of the original station design in order to handle 6-unit Mark I trains.

Seriously? Because the Millenium Line was built around 2000/2001 and there would be no comparison video from 1986. Dumb question.
