  • Stephanie Caterson, M.D. is a reconstructive plastic surgeon who specializes in comprehensive breast reconstruction, including advanced microsurgical techniques. She is the Director of Perforator Breast Reconstruction and leads the collaborative breast reconstruction program at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and ChristianaCare.
    Dr. Caterson has been practicing since 2007 and began her career at Harvard / Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where she spent over twelve years developing an internationally renowned microsurgical breast reconstruction program. There, she served as the Director of Perforator Breast Reconstruction and performed over 1500 microsurgical flaps. Additionally, Dr. Caterson was the Associate Program Director for the Harvard Plastic Surgery residency program and was honored with many exceptional teaching awards. While in Boston, Dr. Caterson was an integral surgeon in many face and hand transplant procedures with the Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation team. She was also an essential provider for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, providing acute care and, later, microsurgical reconstructive procedures for limb salvage.
    She is a prominent member of many professional societies including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgeons, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Research Council and the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Caterson has served on several national/international professional and scientific committees and has lectured extensively in the area of breast reconstruction. She has also published over 35 peer reviewed articles as well as many editorials, reviews and chapters.
    Dr. Caterson was raised in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. She studied aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado, where she earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s of Science. Dr. Caterson then attended Jefferson Medical College and stayed in Philadelphia at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for her General Surgery residency. She completed her Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA and finished her training with a Microsurgery fellowship at Harvard / Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA.
    Outside the hospital, Dr. Caterson enjoys spending time with her husband, EJ, and their three boys. She is a fly fishing enthusiast and loves spending time outdoors hiking and skiing. Dr. Caterson has volunteered with Casting for Recovery - a healing program for women with breast cancer that combines breast cancer education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of fly fishing.
