Winter is Here! Installing an Insulated Wood Ceiling and in my Off Grid Log Cabin

  • After digging out from a winter storm (that wasn't as bad as predicted in my location), I continue weatherproofing my off grid log cabin by adding door locks and trim to the porch door and the breezeway door. I insulate the ceiling and start installing charred 1" pine rough lumber, which immediately traps more of the heat from the woodstove and makes the cabin much more efficient than my last cabin.
As I'm sure you've noticed over the years, I really like chaga and drink it every day for the taste but mainly for the health benefits. Now that the birch trees are dormant for the season, it's harvest time and it's back in stock on my website.

Shawn, I would like to extend a belated Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family from New York. I want take this moment to thank you for sharing your incredible journey with all of us. Your videos bring a home sickness in me as I was born and raised in the country and I have been living in the city for way too long. I miss the simplicity of country life, the beauty you see, the stillness, and the relaxing atmosphere that comes with it. I miss walking in the woods after a snow fall, or cuddling up on the couch to read, or crochet, or just simply look at the window and see nothing but nature. Watching your videos reminds me of my life when I was younger. Years ago my husband and I discuss wanting to live in a log cabin, but sadly our life went in a totally different direction. Thank you for allowing myself to live vicariously through your videos the life we could have had. God Bless you and your family.

I extended the holiday and my thankfulness to Shawn for allowing us into his life, following his progress in building his off grid log home, the quality of his work, and the great videography we get to watch every week. Thanksgiving is celebrated to show thanks for gifts given. In that spirit I give thanks. Just because the first settlers started this tradition doesn’t mean we can’t share it with others around the world. After all that is why we have Thanksgiving. The settlers was giving thanks for the help and generosity of the native Americans. And look how their heirs treated the American Indians. Giving thanks is a dying art of showing appreciation. It’s not just sitting around the table with family and friends. You might want to open you heart and mind that there is a much bigger meaning and more to this country than the small bubble you live in.

As a general contractor and carpenter for the last 35 years I'd say he knows when it is ok to be rough and have some gaps (ceiling pine) and when tight seals are important (door stops etc). He's his own customer so finish work can have his own standards, my clients generally want joints on natural trim that won't allow a playing card to fit. Of course we are working on projects with modern tools and power...you can also drive to the project within 20'-100' which makes a lot more things possible.

Should show your videos in every school and all grade levels.
You show nothing is a given but dreams needs work.
Really wish the USA would teach to all.
    Thanks

Ur cabin is very nice in appearance Shawn. I had made a comment sometime ago, that I thought you might be done near Christmas of 2022. And it can still happen yet. But you have been outside, earlier harvesting your garden crops, which wasn't actually working on th cabin. But all in all, you have fulfilled most of what I had predicted. Th covering of th interior ceilings, and upper gable, wasn't apart of my thinking. Because your earlier cabin didn't seem to have these extra touches to it. All in all this has been a very productive journey, and I'm grateful, that you have invited us all along for the completion of your wilderness adventure. A Brthr in CHRIST.

Beautiful ,Shawn; more than words here!
The sounds, working thr wood, the tools,so very relaxing to see& hear.
    The quiet.
I am thinking that you ' paid' for what looks to the viewer so easy; measure twice, cut once, making sure you make NO STUPID,careless MISTAKES, resulting in simple accidents - injuring yourself by hammering a thumb ,cutting yourself, falling which could turn into major injuries.
You are allways careful with presence of mind, always aware of what you are going; nothing CARELESS.

It's great to see you insulating and winterizing the homestead, Shawn. You'll soon be snug. Working inside a tee-shirt shows it's comfy there already.
Fried sausages are really great "comfort food" too. I was once asleep alone in a ski house in the Colorado Rockies, and there was a crash, so I imagined a cougar or grizzly trying to break in and have me for breakfast and then realized it was a snow slide from the roof! The house had roof heating to prevent snow build-up. I was thinking that a mobile workbench, movable from inside to the front porch would be a thought, Shawn. Maybe with a vise?
