Shawn, your photography is outstanding! The music is so calming with the scenery and how you include Cali, just the best videos I have ever seen! Love watching Cali sway that hind end and wag that pretty tail is all I can take before I start to tear up! Your videos take my breath away! I enjoy them so much, I sit for hours watching them and realize my morning coffee runs into lunchtime! The tearing is not for sadness but from the pleasure of watching you go about your day living the dream! I can almost feel the snow beneath my feet, the smell of the trees, the water rushing and you are real easy on the eyes! No worries for your wife, I'm 67! Teehee! The truth is, it's a little too late for me to live this way, it's something I should have done many years ago! Now, I'm recovering from heart surgery and now enjoying my time just watching your video's and seeing how other people live. I've turned the TV off and don't watch the news! I've always wondered how a log cabin was built, so now I know! You teach so much about how to live in survival mode, like starting fires, cooking and making coffee! I once had a coffee pot like the one you brew yours in and still do have my cast iron pots and skillets! I can't let those go. I live in Central Louisiana now and we do cook a lot of gumbo's and jambalaya in them. There is one question I have, hopefully you can answer. Cali looks so healthy and fit. What do you feed her to keep her so active and her coat is just stunning! We can tell she's living a great lifestyle and is such a happy girl! Any suggestions on dogfood and how much? Thanks!

The quote at the end put me back into a canoe with my father when I was a teenager. Fishing on a lake in New Hampshire, early morning with fog floating just above the water. We listened to large mouth gulping bugs off the surface. It seemed just natural to move in a crawl, to speak in a whisper, as though nature was still resting and we were the children of the earth respecting the wishes of peace and quiet. Every clunk of an oak or crash of a lure against the water echoed as though a book had landed with a crash in a library.
    I miss that.

That little stove reminds me of my great grandmother, Mary Stuart, who always cooked on a woodburning stove and ironed all her clothes with an iron heated by the stove‼️❣️I loved going to visit her in her little house in Yakima, Washington. She used to tell us stories of Idaho where my Grandmother Grace was born and raised (and my mother too). She used to take my grandmother with her and row a little boat across the Snake River to cook for all the Ranch Hands on a big ranch there in Idaho. She had a little bottle of small colorful gems in all colors, saying she had found them in the rivers of Idaho.

People who hunt and fish and will respect your property and the land! You could support a good living for you and your family. My older brother was in a mule pack in an old photo we have. Jim would have been 75 this year so many years ago. Dad was a renaissance man like you. If he could dream it he could build it. Don't give up on your dreams. You have a lot of the same hand tools he used. I never saw him use a drill press like yours too cool! If he didn't he would have loved it. Love the peace and beauty. Music too. We grew up in Yosemite national park in California so missing the mountains and trees right now.

The best and maybe most relevant video ever especially the last few minutes. What natural beauty you have in your life. The best message? The shot of the tree leaning, but not breaking on the windswept shoreline at 43:07. So appropriate for us now during these really stressful COVID times. Thanks for sharing.

As you speak of, I sure miss spending time in forest as yours and the smells. As a kid we lived on the edge of a massive forest, those were spectacular times and memories missed now.
Cali looked majestic in some of those water shots. I'd enjoy having a photo of that tree at 43:14 mark, it looks like windswept in motion while just standing there..

Shawn, I thank you for sharing your reflective moment at the lake side in the tail end of your video. It has been months since I have been able to have a forest wash, or enjoy the snow on the trees falling on me, and the serenity of a lake side. We are all facing our own challenges these days. I appreciate you sharing a self reflecting moment. Gives me pause. Thank you.

Shawn my husband and I watch you everyday. We are probably just as eager as you are to start your new home. We love Cali and it is not hard to see you take the time to throw his toys for him to get his exercises. I hope you and your beautiful wife will be very happy in your new home, and yes you are eye candy yourself. I must say one could learn a lot from you as I did but unfortunately for me I am too old and full of arthritis lol. Anyway Shawn we wish nothing but the best for you and your family. Keep building and stay safe!

I like the quote by Sigurd F. Olson. I have a friend who camps on an island in the Quetico, in the middle of a waterfall. He filmed the waterfall from every angle, for one hour. (no talking) When he has a bad day, he plays this video.

I felt the peace and serenity of your new homesite, I folded my arms, sat back in my chair and watched. That windblown tree is beautiful...don't cut that one down! I know you won't, you could sell that to a magazine. The spoils of the wolves was a bit disheartening, keep Cali close. Then an awesome sunset and the perfect quote at the end. What a beautiful area you live in.

The beautiful landscapes and your musings on the forest were like Walden's Pond had come to life. I like thinking about "pioneer trees" and "forest bathing." It is certainly true that being surrounded by the woods, smelling the pines, hearing the wind in the trees, feeling the rough surfaces of a boulder you sit on to watch the birds and clouds go by, these are the best medicine for body and mind. Never far from me in Colorado is the Arkansas River and it is lined with cottonwood trees, some up to 150 years old, and these enormous and twisted trees are called "grandfather" trees. Nature anywhere can make you feel connected to the earth, and to your deepest self. Thanks Shawn for a great video.

If I could find the words to express how much your videos have done for my anxiety, I believe it would break the internet.
I woke at about 6 AM this morning, full-on panic attack. Basically, it's the feeling of being buried alive. I sat and watched multiple videos, and it eventually vanished. Thank you, sir, for sharing your life with us.
Also, I cant find the words , but trees give off something which helps to fight disease (for them), and, as the gent expressed, it has a calming effect. The calmness is due to whatever the trees put out. Very interesting, and explains a lot.

Thank you for sharing your journey in life. I have built things on icy, cold days like this. I know how your hands ache until you get them warm. The fire becomes your life support until you get the blood flowing. Those logs aren’t getting any lighter, are they? Age is cruel like that. But your end product is strong and honest. Well built, brother. Sharing your spiritual time with Cali in your special spot was very personal and kind. It gives a glimpse of the rewards of hard labor. It is a gift of peace and bonding with nature. Very nice craft.

Ok, so I'm assuming this workshop is on the new property. Wow, it seems like he just finished the one at the old homestead. Shawn is amazing, so adaptable. And, he shares his wise wisdom with all of us. The sounds of crunching snow, snapping branches, falling trees: heavenly! I can almost feel the brisk breezes and smell the pine. And then there's sweet Cali...🥰

Ok, so come on I say to myself. I not only enjoy watching the build, I also enjoy learning and so enjoy the beauty of everything I see here. I see it in the wood, the trees, the fire, the rock, water, the sky..everything I see in these videos I enjoy. I don’t watch tv AT ALL here at home, but I will watch these video’s. So it’s my cable channel, and worth paying for! Totally worth it.
I’m pretty organized with certain things, so hoping you have it set up where something can be done the first week of every month. If not, I will pay for my channel either way. Absolutely spectacular, the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen right here. Thank you so very much!

some beautiful shots once again shawn! i cant help but think while watching, with the climate going the way it is, that when the now normal parts of the world descend into deserts or revert back under water, your descendants will still have one mighty fine place to call their own. the frozen northern territories will be an oasis in an otherwise difficult world to live in

I love how much you learned and share about forest ecology. It's an amazing conservation project in my opinion. Here some comments on this topic: In research we usually measure tree stem diameters both at the base and at breast height (1.4 m) to correlate with age. They are fairly good age predictor variables but local growing conditions and varying forest structure through time can lead to highly variable growing speeds, remember that when you estimate the age of old trees using an age/diameter regression! As you pointed out earlier, the current species distribution does not necessarily reflect local historic biodiversity because of selective logging. Also, historic species diversity was not necessarily in equilibrium with the current climate. To determine what species will thrive on your property, I suggest to study old growth forest in the area, but also consider species that are more adapted to climate conditions that will prevail in the future (e.g. more heat tolerant species). You should also consider creating wildflower habitat for insects, which will help pollinate your garden, in addition to forest edge habitat. Thanks for this great content!
