I started with a 1/24 scale crawler with nothing no tools or anything related to RC’s specificity. Then I got one 1/10 scale crawler & that was it now I have a lot of stuff in general once you have been in it for awhile you tend to collect a lot of stuff & having alot of extra parts comes in handy once you start building & customizing them.
Good stuff!!! If you did something like this with your motors brushed and brushless (and ESC's). That would be helpful for this RC novice. Or maybe you have and I haven't found it. Either way, Like button energized. Cheers!!!
I definitely agree with having to always stand in one spot when you're using most RCS but a crawler encourages you to walk with it. I've done some amazing hikes with my crawler so far and it absolutely changed my view of the industry. I put up most of my bachelors for sale and just happy with one crawler.
Hi. Any advices to 1/24 or 1/18 but more capable (more flex, bigger tires/wheels, low speed precision, ballasts, waterproof, I don't know really) out of the box or with cheap upgrades, in order to begin cheap and have inside and outside versatility but could grow up a bit in the hobby with better performance in crawling
For the past 2yrs, I've really wanted a green Gen8. It was the first one I found with full fenders, no body posts, and under $400. Life keeps screwing me out of that money, eventually I'll get one.🤞💚
Great advice! New guy here. Wish i would have watched a vid like this a year ago. If your inactive, go for crawling or track. If your active with good weather, go for trails. Im active in Arizona. A 1/10 scale trail rig with some crawling ability is perfect for me. I went with a basecamp and some upgrades. Great advice! Thanks!
Great video and great info given. When I first got into the crawler scene,I went to a crawler event (07'-08') in my area to see what rc crawling was all about before dropping cash on something I may not like. While not everyone has this option,it was for me and I loved it alot and bought an axial ax10 at the event, lol. I suggest if it's available to check and see if there are any crawler events and take a look at the rigs and talk to tge people before jumping in on something you might not like.
For a newbie I`d definitely suggest going 1/10th, loads of different rigs at different price points and parts readily available. Going smaller might put a lot of people off the hobby.
While not exactly that. My first hobby grade RC was an 18th scale brushless HBX basher. It was so fast that it flipped and rolled easily, so easily that it just wasn't fun driving it. Had I left it at that, I probably would never have bought anything else. Then I found crawlers. They were more my speed anyway.
I feel that. 2 years ago I picked up an SCX24 to get back into RC, then realized it's too small and hard to work on for an old guy with bad eyes and big hands. I'm on disability, so my budget is almost nothing. For now I'm gathering parts to build a 1/10 scaled out rig. Eventually we all get it right.
My first ever RC was an SCX24. I’m middle aged. I have a a couple quality 1/10 rigs, but I have much more fun with the Scx24 and the TRX4m. Perhaps it’s a matter of available terrain, but I feel so much more accomplished scaling a “mountain” with a little rig than just casually driving up and over it with the 1/10. I have a lot of good pure rock though. When trailing I prefer the 1/10. Plus as a newbie it was easier to justify the price of a small rig to find out if crawling would have long term appeal for me. As it happens, the small rig led to me having a new hobby I love and what seems like a new rig every couple months.
Appreciate the helpful breakdown! Definitely going to earmark this to share with people getting into the hobby. Recently getting into more hiking/trailing with crawlers and absolutely loving it.
Very nice video but I can't believe you skipped the speed information which is what I really really needed to know. Anyway, can I mod one of these, say the orange crawler one, with a standard camera mount bolt and hook up a camera on it. A light camera such as the DJI-Osmo or a light 360 camera such as the Insta360-One X2 and drive it at walking pace (2MpH or 5MpH)? It's the reason why I needed to know the speed. I don't need to know the maximum speed, I need to know the minimum controlalble speed. Basically I need to know if it would go at snail pace.
I’m conflicted between A first basher (Arrma Mojave) and a Crawler (TRX6) never owned either but after getting into RC drift I want to explore something new like off roading.
in my opinion you have to know what you will do with it. i bought now second hand 1:10 cause i whant to take it out for trailing and crawling. friend of mine bought some hbx 1:24 and they just driven them one time. seems for me the most importent is what you will do whis it. greatings from germany
It's a rock crawler if you crawl rocks with it and a trail truck if you run trails. Some may be better equipped for one or the other , but that is what it boils down to. Lol.
I was recuperating last year from an extended hospital stay when I got into RC. My first was an 18th scale FMS Atlas 6x6, followed by the 10th scale Atlas 4x4, SCX10 II Deadbolt, SCX24 Bronco, and finally an SCX10 III Gladiator. I've learned what I liked, didn't like, and learned how to modify them to my taste. I like the larger scale trucks, but don't really care about scale or crawling. For me they are more trail trucks that get me out of the house and moving. Plus my 5yo nephew is into them so it's fun to be a big child again playing with him.
New to the RC world. Want to build an RC Zamboni. Saw a video of buying a 1/10 crawler popping the body off, attaching a water tank ~ 10 lbs to it and a few accessories. Is a crawler able to hold that weight? How would i know? Don’t want to buy something just to did out it won’t work.
I feel like if you're asking these questions, you don't know enough about it to be comfortable enough to actually follow through with what will be involved...
Can I ask what would be the best 1/10 crawler be on a budget ? Even if it’s older that would be cool so I can try and find secondhand preferably? I’m a single dad so budget is tight and i sold my rc cars a few months back and I’d love to get into crawling this time. I’ve been bashing for years and am familiar with how rc cars function and love tinkering lol.
In my opinion the new red cat crawler is awesome for the money. Any axial scx10s, elements are great and have great aftermarket support for all the customizing you would want. I find some good deals on offer up etc.
I recommend 24th scale Crawlers for any kid that wants to get into RC, as they're a lot less likely to break it or anything else, can be driven inside or outside and being a crawler the battery usually lasts long enough to have a good play b4 running out, everything else just can't compare for a first RC, best beginner RC hands down

I believe one of the main problems in the rock crawler/trail runner market is that the market does not care if it is selling a trail runner or a rock crawler. But there is an important distinction. One is made for hard surfaces primarily and the other is for soft surfaces primarily. With alot of the rest over lapping. Without the market respecting that many buy the wrong rig type and then try to mod it to the other type wasting money along the way. When if they bought the right one the first time they could of done more investing instead of false correcting.
I wish this video would have been around when I started. Started with a gen 1 ecx barrage, then a e10. Then they came out with the axial 10Ii. Guess I've been doing this a while. The choices are so much better today.
I have a fun time with my 1/10 rigs but the 1/24 is much more convenient. It's easier to find tough obstacles in my yard, in the local park, or even the drainage ditch near the office.
hey man i have a 60A brushed esc hobby wing on my crawler what motor do you advise me to use ? i want one that can resist water can you give me some name brands ?
Our sport motors are great in water. Just don't get from Amazon, ebay, alibaba because they will be fakes and low quality. 21t trailmaster sport 550 is very popular
The satisfaction of looking at a climb and being like " I think it will do that". Then actually getting up it, oh yeah thats the ticket. Do have a question could you do a segment about picking gearing. Or matching motor to axle ratio. I changed motors in my redcat and went to portals. Its geared pretty well for guessing, but i guessed 😂
They are only disappointed if they were uneducated and were not bothered enough to get educated about their purchase before buying. If you care so much about your satisfaction with your purchase then care enough to know more about what you are buying.
@@RTmadnesstoothe trx4 sport actually does well. I don’t own traxxas crawlers but we have a few in the group that do awesome lines. I myself won’t be buying anymore traxxas rcs. I have a few of their bashers already.
My first 4x4 RC in the late 80's was a Clod Buster dual 7 cells, NOVAK speed controllers and ASTRO flight motors w/ rear steer.👍👍👍
Same exact reason I love My trail rigs! 😊 Exercise, new terrain, new scenery, plus the thrill, and tranquility of being in nature soothes my soul! 😊
Couldn't agree more!
Need a video like this for the different axles. F10t, portal, ar44, etc.
I'm on it!
Easy f10 portal.
Some solid info, we sometimes forget we all had to start somewhere. A series of these aimed at beginners would definitely be a great idea 👍
I think we will do just that! Good to yearly refresh these topics

Bashers*
I like the mini rock crawlers because you can make a course indoors or go outside and unlike the racers and bashers you tracks forever change
One of the best videos I’ve seen so far. You made me think about things I never thought of before. Especially towards the end
happy it could help!

It’s really hard to beat Redcat for a first 1/10 scale crawler…Or as far as crawlers go at least, for the money

My wife runs a gen 8. The only big difference that you can tell is steering angle. Besides that it rails.
I like the E10 so I got one and it handles sure well and it's easy to modify
