If you were the one that was hurt in the process of the breakup, it makes it harder to open up. We as humans do much more to avoid pain than we do to gain pleasure.
You experienced a breakup. Maybe you went several years attempting to figure things out. You have been waiting for the moment to reconnect and the moment finally arrives. It is understandable that you have been trying hard and in doing so, you ultimately had success despite it being quite some time since the last time you experienced that level of joy.
