Chuck M . With sadly one of the best guitarist with a bright and famous future ahead of him past away so young. The sorrow Chrissie went through, I could only imagine being devastating at her age. But she fought back and made it. Now she's touring and having the time of her life. Keep in mind she moved London as a teenager, in her teens to make this dream come true several years during the punk scene. This girl has seen it ALL. LOVE YOU Chrissie.
That first Pretenders album was in my humble opinion, one of the benchmarks for anything that wanted to be called Rock n Roll. There are great rock n roll bands that really hit you between the eyes, and I'm not discounting Led Zeppelin or the Stones or any of the greats. I'm just saying this Album was some of the most raw, NOT over produced, smack you down and make you like it rock I've heard to date. 40 years later and this album has stood the test of time. For anyone reading this who doesn't own it, or hasn't heard it, it's worth every penny. Just simple, stripped back, RAW Rock n Roll. LOVE IT!
couldn't agree anymore! I was 13 when m-tv hit the American airwaves that August 1st of 1981. They only played this video after 11 pm,,now being 50, I see why. and to me,,this is the pretenders!!! James Honeyman Scott,,Pete Farnham,,Martin Chambers, and Chew bubblegum and kick aas with any of the guys Chrissy Hinders!; and she's a fellow Ohioian.when Farnham & Scott died,,,the gritty,,in your face attitude the band had in both the studio & live performances died with them!! Yes Robbie McIntosh was a highly gifted blues/jazz/rock guitarist in his own right,,but he DID NOT have that in your face attitude and playing like Honeyman-Scott had.these 4 ARE the pretenders!!!! Once Robbie McIntosh came on board,,there music/songs/appearance drastically changed!! How do go from "tattooed love boys" to "time the avenger"and NOT notice??? I'm shure bank accounts grew exponentially,,but the music lost its 'teeth'!!!! James-Honeyman Scott,,Pete Farnham,, you will be deeply missed!!! In a recent interview (2/4/2019) Chrissy herself admits the best lineup in her career was those 2,her and Martin. What I wouldn't give to have seen these 4 back in 1982!!
Yeah, they were just a great, solid rock band that fate split up way too soon! I've noticed that when people talk about the biggest tragedies in rock history, what happened to The Pretenders is never mentioned often enough. IMO, it should be, because it is one of the 10 worst tragedies in rock history!
+William R Williams Wow, are you serious? How did the bands get paid, who sponsered it? I don't care what anybody says, there aren't ANY coloured glasses involved, things were SO much better and simpler and not so fucking $$$ argh GREEDY ack!! fuck MONEY MONEY MOOOONNNNNEEEEYYYYY!!!!! . . back then. ;) P.S. No, I'm not bitter!!!!
Damn I miss THIS band…this video stands as a testament that the studio versions were not just studio trickery.. They really were that damned good…the energy of punk rock, the lyrics that had value and meaning, the honesty that was expressed by the band in their presentation…all over far too soon…
Solid guitar fills by James Honeyman-Scott. The Pretenders were never this hard rocking again after the deaths of Honeyman-Scott and Farndon (although Farndon had left the band almost a year before he died - ironically Honeyman-Scott died 2 days after Farndon was sacked). They lost something with those two gone. This is the best song on the album imo
Yeah, this is the best song for sure. Something else, if every song on their debut was as good as this one, it would probably be the best debut in rock history, IMO. If not, it would be very close! As it stands, it's in the upper echelon already.
And one of many great debut albums from that period, along with Boston, The Cars, Van Halen, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Black Flag, and Joy Division.
Briefly from early 1980 through summer of 1981 they were the best live rock band on the planet, and I had seen the Clash at the time. Listen to them live in Boston that March. Incredible. They open with Precious. She had them practiced into a furious tight combo 6 months after this France 79 show.
Sam.Have to agree.I think women wore the punk trousers better than men! Certainly have more integrity than John Lydon voting for Trump Arggh! He's soon sold out 🙄. More power to Debbie, Patti -& the Divine Ms Hynde.precious is one of my faves,😎
The ONLY line up of the Pretenders, they f..king ROCKED and all those 'innuendos' in the lyrics gotta love it. the entire band was just great. RIP James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon. Chrissie is a force of nature and loves nature her being a prime Vegan!
Like all great bands, in the end they COULD PLAY. What a sad loss James Honeyman-Scott. Truly underrated , innovative guitarist who left us way too early
I never cared for the sound of a Telecaster until The Pretenders opened my eyes/ears to their awesome sound. A perfect match for the snarly/growly delivery of Chrissie. Every song a timeless original.
I've always loved this band since I'm a teenager, when I get this record to my hands I don't let it go yet I still have it, it's one of my 10 favorite bands of all time, as they say rock never dies I'm 54 years old ...
I loved punk and new wave because they came out at a time when women were starting to get a chance to lead the band. Punk was all-inclusive. In those days, you could could be Black, white, female, Mexican, gay, straight, even overweight like Debora Iyall or David Thomas.
LOL. Ed Shockey on WMMR in Philadelphia lambasted me for calling up to request this song in '79 back when you could request songs anytime.. He said it was too explicit. I told him he was getting too old for radio. F him. Great song! Go Chrissy!
The Pretenders was the first album I ever bought, I was 11 years old and wanted to be Chrissie Hynde - thought I was halfway there with the black eyeliner and heavy fringe!
Exceptional. Saw em like 12 yrs ago they did two encores & I left thinking show was over. Was in slippery frozen parking lot by myself freezing. They let me back in. This was the last song. Was amazing.
I Remember when this came out and it is still one of the best debut Albums in Rock History that never gets the credit it deserves. Pete Fardon and James will always be remembered by me. Keep on Rocking Chrissy and Martin..😎😎😎😎
the Pretenders were very important to me when i was growing up. they were totally original and the songs and musicianship were just what the late 70's needed in that so so period. they were always a band that was in your face no matter if they were rocking or crafting an unforgetable ballad. yes the loss of Jimmy and Pete was dreadful. but Chrissy soldiered on taking on great musicians along the way. the line up changed but the music was still anthemic and rocking. and that tremolo in her voice.
There were a few, very early Pretender, songs that were borderline punk. This being one of them. Also, "Precious" "The Wait" Some punk rock influence going on there. I love early punk rock.. Who doesn't ??
Punk was actually started in the USA at CBGB's.Not a British scene,we actually copied it when Chrissie -& Debbie Harry -& Ramone's toured UK.I would say Patti Smith is the oldest punket ( John Lydon get to the back of the punk que)women were the pioneers of early punk rock & they wouldn't be senseless enough to be pro Trump!!!!!
I saw the first tour The Pretenders did in the states twice. Saw the band with the original line up five times. Enjoyed Chrisses band live many times since then. Being from Akron that wasn't a hard thing to do untill Covid.
One of the Best Rock debut albums to be sure. Got to see the original band on the Pretenders II tour in the early 80's. Have always loved them and am always interested in what Chrissy Hynde has to say. A true Rock hero and can we get a hand for the always awesome Martin Chambers and his drumming!?
I saw them on this tour and she was extraordinary as was the whole band but she definitely had the audience in the palm of her hand. Sex and powerful as hell. They were great, of course and I was lucky to see them. It was San Diego.
Saw them at Gusman in Miami in '79. Still one of the most rocking, amazing shows I've seen. From the opening song to the encore they kicked our ass. And we loved it.
"I found a picture of you..." RIP James Honeyman Scott, great original lead guitarist of the Pretenders. You are gone 29 years, but not forgotten!! Your style was amazing- beautiful melodies ,searing solos, hammer-ons, pulloffs and a twang to boot! Inspiration for me...maybe one day I'll own your Zemaitis guitar that I so adore. I hope someone is playing the shit out of it as u once did!!!

Never mind any genre, Hyde wrote some of the best rock music ever. WAY under appreciated. Along with bands like the Talking Heads, B52s, Joe Jackson, etc. some of the best music ever produced.
I read some where that they had all the potential to be the next HUGE band, right up there with Zeppelin ,until the 2 tragic deaths in the band happened. I have to say that I saw Chrissie in concert a couple of years ago and she was amazing and still has IT!!
when I was younger 12 or so when this vid came out It did'nt do a thing for me,but when I changed over from drums(20 yrs)to playing bass(8+yrs)it changed alot of my music choices(I still kept zep, sabbah, beatles etc..you can fill in the rest)and bands thst never ever even crossed my mind I find a new passion for,and this is one of them.

I always liked Pete Farndon. Remember Chrissie Hynde once mentioned flying off his Triumph bike near Trafalgar Square when he took a corner too fast, and tearing her backside open as a result of it. Said she gave him a hard time too often, which she seemed sorry about doing that.
If there ever was a top ten for greatest debut albums . .surely The Pretenders 1st album would be one of them . .
Bingo Chris, you hit the nail on the head.
Chuck M . With sadly one of the best guitarist with a bright and famous future ahead of him past away so young. The sorrow Chrissie went through, I could only imagine being devastating at her age. Chris Ellis I couldn’t agree more! One of my all-time favorite albums.
Definitely! And I'll add Dire Straits first album to that top 10.
Exactly... And then there was Pretenders II I don my hat and bow to the greatness of both albums, always.
Martin Chambers is an absolute hurricane on drums on this song.
Shine on James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon, shine on.....Aloha

I think you mean 40 years, not 50.
Good call on this album, I was 18 when this came out, the 2nd album was just as good, too bad the 2 band members died so soon after
Warrogue1 yeah, at this point let's not push it. Lol

I worked at The Santa Monica Civic when they played. Imagine being a kid in high school getting to experience this. Changed my life.
Summer of 79 15 years old, Pretenders, B52's, Ramones and Joe Jackson is Central Park.....all for free.

William R Williams I only remember seeing The Pretenders in Central Park. Did they go on last? If so, I must have shown up late.
All my favourites, would have loved it..!
Missed it being on west coast at the time
WOW
I was lucky to see the original Pretenders , Santa Monica Civic Auditorium when they first toured America
I was at that show, too. Incredible!
I SAW THE PRETENDERS @ UCLA PAULEY PAVILION ON VALENTINE'S 2-14-1982 BOW BOW BOW OPENED.
Incredibly tight live performance...the original band was IT. This album changed my life..been a drummer/vocalist in bands ever since
Same. Chambers was incredible. My band covered The Wait. It's Fierce! 🥁 🚀
One of the best live bands ever assembled.
The Pretenders were never the same after losing those two
Duh,
Damn I miss THIS band…this video stands as a testament that the studio versions were not just studio trickery..
They really were that damned good…the energy of punk rock, the lyrics that had value and meaning, the honesty that was expressed by the band in their presentation…all over far too soon…

Mystery achievement was awesome to
This song is as raw and powerful today as it was then. Holds up to the test of time!
This entire album is a lost island album - top 10 classic in my book

@@stevejohnson1397 my favorite from the album. This song is number 2
One of the best debut albums of all time. Great live. Great 4 members.
been saying that for years, they hit the ground running
And one of many great debut albums from that period, along with Boston, The Cars, Van Halen, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Black Flag, and Joy Division.
Saw them with the original band. Cold winter night in 78 or 79 in NYC. May have been 80 .
Every note on that kit is perfectly placed and executed...so hard to do. Martin, master musician!
Briefly from early 1980 through summer of 1981 they were the best live rock band on the planet, and I had seen the Clash at the time.
Listen to them live in Boston that March. Incredible. They open with Precious.

American singer with 3 brits! Never knew that until I saw an interview on MTV😮
I like watching old film of jimmy and pete makes me. Long for my youth.

Fing hell. When will great accessible punk rock and roll come back?
I concur with this sentiment.

What about Brian May’s solo on Crazy Little Thing Called Love? That’s amazing
Chrissie Hynde hits you in the gut, then in the heart and the head. Core of steel on this one - she's not the one sniveling.
I've always loved this band since I'm a teenager, when I get this record to my hands I don't let it go yet I still have it, it's one of my 10 favorite bands of all time, as they say rock never dies I'm 54 years old ...

Agreed. He seems to be quite under-appreciated.
That's 7/4 time
@@Jukkala thx i was wondering .
@@Jukkala I cannot not even think in 7/4 time, but i can listen to Martin all day.
Absolutely! This was always an odd but brilliant beat. Incredible arrangement.

+Keith Russell So, I take it he wasn't a "Shock-ey Jockey" then.
LOL! Right you are!
"I told him he was getting too old for radio."
Awesome.
I remember Ed
When I have debates with the youth today about how music is now I just can't get it through their heads, this is the real deal.
One of the greatest records of all time - you want rock, punk, ska, reggae, ballad, and brilliance all wrapped in one sleeve - this is it.
"I shot my mouth off and you showed me what that hole was for"
RIP James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farnham.
My favorite line from this song...so damn good
The Pretenders was the first album I ever bought, I was 11 years old and wanted to be Chrissie Hynde - thought I was halfway there with the black eyeliner and heavy fringe!

Pete FARNDON.

What an intense performance. Very hard working musicians in those days. What the hell happened?
Drugs zzz a curse on all dealers.
One of the all time best bands. Amazing musicians, song writing, and performing. One of he all time best.
Pete and Martin were quite the rhythm section...Wow
What a tremendous song. An absolute star singing. And all the riffs of rock history. Sublime!!!
This song was long before it's time. If this came out today people would try to melt it down and inject into their veins. All time great rock song.
There is a live recording of this band doing "Sabre Dance" by Ketchiturian and it is amazing. Go dig it up and enjoy.

Perfect rock and roll. Never try to play along to this Pretenders song on my drum kit, so far above my ability...but I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!
