That very first Pretenders album is as good as it gets.
It was , but when they lost farndon and honeyman- scott , they were pedestrian
'F..k Off ' has never sounded this cool before as at 2:39 seconds mark lol! Excellent band that had a real fire about them. RIP James and Pete Imagine what could've been?
I was 16 years old at this show and was blown away. One of the best live bands ever.
I’d like to thank my mum for taking me to this night ,front row at 14 years old
LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great parenting!!
I was there too! I was 13. My brother took me. 😊
THAT'S how you play rock n roll, kids.
🤘🖤🎵🎶
I saw this tour, but in Philly. That original Pretenders lineup was ferocious live.
thanks for this footage, Martin banging away. Chrissie sassy as ever. Love it..!!!!!!!!!
So good. Sad this talented original line-up didn't get a few more years
The powerhouse drumming of Mr Martin Chambers.
i was lucky to drink with him after a show in Pa. He was very nice~
Oh yeah....
Yessssssssssss!!!
@@dlakoba4459 cool
RIP James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon.Seminal band, so under rated
Boy after 41 years this still rocks your socks off
The Fabolous Capital Theatre Passaic,New Jersey.... A great venue to see legendary rock and roll bands... I live in Kentucky now, but I was born and raised in nearby Paterson,New Jersey and had seen Adam and the Ants, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts,Wall of Vodoo , and countless other acts there it was an excellent time to be alive and I really miss the theater, which has been since torn down.... Such memories indeed!!!!
This is one of the best live performances I have seen. Glad they got it on tape. Chrissie is a god damned beast
Yup...it is for sure...
Exactly
Now this is real music, unlike what's played today......love you Chrissie!
Wow! Thanks for posting this.
My first concert at 13! And I love this band still.
Original band was brilliant. A perfect moment in time. So glad I got to see them.
Agree & saw them too...'84 learning To Crawl tour which was great, but not like this...my Sis saw the original band...wish I had as well...
Agree, perfect mix of punk and new wave, with soul.
@@BV-nx6vq The original line up was over by 84
Never saw the original line up - did see them on Halloween Night - where Chrissie had a duet with a long hair fellow at the time (rumored to be her boyfriend) at the Last of the Independents Tour - she smashed her tambourine into pieces - went flying into the audience - I stuck my hand out like a hockey goalie I am - and caught it - to this day - sits in my room along with my ticket framed. Good times.
One of the great rock and roll songs!!
Wow! I never realized how hard Martin Chambers is workin' for these tunes and how pitch perfect Chrissie's live vocals are... if you haven't already, go read her bio. it's a barnburner!
If this is the Sydney Capitol Theatre show I was at, Chambers launched at least half a dozen sticks off his cymbals into the crowd. It was AWESOME!
Heard they had to steel-cable his set to the stage or he'd knock it flying... rugby player strength...
Alan Nicolle do you remember the water being poured on his toms and flying up with the lights on as he hit them ?
Classic. Very raw
Coo'kiin...in-your-face Rock & Roll...
Perfection! Best 2 note guitar solo ever at 1:59
.
+Kim Morris If already: seventh. Got no ears?
Wonderful to see the original lineup of the band on that first tour. Fantastic. I was 15 when this came out and when I bought this album and they and Chrissie had a huge impact on my life and outlook. Chrissie is a goddess to this day.
I'm very thankful that I saw them on that tour. Amazing!
An awesome ride from this extraordinary band...everyone firing on all cylinders & just killin' it...thick, primal, head down R&R 'tude...wish I'd been there....Wow...
FIRST album is the Masterpiece
My husband, George and I saw Chrissie at the Moore Theater in Seattle this same tour. Small venue was like being in Rock and Roll heaven for a night with her. I love this lady and her band. ***
Thank You Chrissy Hynde!! You have always been an inspiration and you lead from the front,!! You are a Pioneer! This vid is So Raw and So Punk. No auto tune ! Just skill!! Practice, Harvey Wallbangers , and Pink Peruvian!!
was at this show. English Beat opened.
What do you remember most about it?
I was at the show too and during Precious (maybe at the 2:20 mark?) Chrissie picked up one of Martin's sticks and threw it into the audience, where thanks to my slow reflexes it hit me in the forehead. It bounced off, someone else grabbed it and I didn't even get to keep the fucker as a souvenir.
Yes, that's what I remember most about the show. :)
One of the great moments in R&R history...Ya'll should check this out because it screams past & present....
Absolutely ❤
Damn they were good. During their short peak, they're right up there on the short list of the all-time great rock bands
My second favorite song from the first album (second to Brass in Pocket). Not only a kick-ass song, I love Chrissie's f-bomb near the end (and the s-bomb at the beginning). KMET in L. A. played Precious uncensored, unlike the wimps at KLOS
The Capitol theater was a XXX cinema buy day and band haven by night. There were no dressing rooms. They connected a trailer to the rear exit door for the band to get ready in. The stage was literally 10 feet in length.
BEST FEMALE ROCK SINGER/PLAYER EVER!!!
Face it... she doesn't have much competition of her caliber... upper tier, top notch
Check out the 1:53 mark where the drum stick flies right out of the drummers hand and goes skyward...now that`s rock n roll.
What a great place to see a concert. All these old tapes from the capital theatre. Great song.
Literally nothing better. What a band 🔥🔥
Fortunate to see them a couple of nights in SF on this tour, and the following year. Unmistakable and amazing, great band. And Chrissie has kept the light on for mah years since.
So glad I got to see that first tour
OMG James Honeyman Scott was just 25 when he died of heart failure through Heroin. He achieved so much in his short life. Sad to think of what else he would undoubtedly have achieved, had he lived. People with talent like his are so blessed. Why do they need drugs?
Its sad and true. I was in awe of James and he was superb in concert and he had such a great look. I too was so lucky to only just get out alive. When their brilliant 1st album came out i was burning the candle at both ends. What an album, and i saw the original band with James and Pete. A super show, all great musicians. Its maybe the pressure to be a rock n roll star of that standing back in the late 70s/early 80s meant having a double life, one being where we destroy ourselves.
James Honeyman Scott was the man.
The two women who inspired me at 10 years old and even Virgo's? Chrissy and Joan I will always be and agree with
step aside gollum... this is my precious
this song personifies Cleveland in the late 70s. excellent!! cheers Chrissy cheers luv!!!
Always The Best ❤
damn they are on fire here
krissy slays!
The original band was it. I never got much into them after the two died
moving through the cleveland heat
Saw them in 1981 in Philly, one of the best live acts ever, Chrissie had old faded leather pants that fit her like a glove,... :o
Was at that same flipping show, Tower Theater, first concert... cut to me onstage a decade later. ;)
Saw this very first US tour in the UC San Diego gymnasium! With my boss! And she supplied the coke and the Mercedes!!!
Omg.....you make me wanna listen to you MORE
One of the best live versions of precious i ever heard them do . James Honeyman-Scott lead guitar here and in the early years 79'-83' . Scott died in 1983 and bassist Pete Farndon died in 1982 . rip bros , hope to join you soon because this life is hell . anyone buy me a ticket to Switzerland ? there i will want to live because In Suisse they give you safe fixes in perpetuity . no street hassles, no worries = take less, got a life .
Kick ass
Fantastic tune and performance.
Rock and Roll QUEEN! And Martin Chambers is the tits on drums! I still cannot believe we are in a world without Martin Chambers and James Honeyman Scott. Much Respect. LONG LIVE ROCK!!!!!!!!!
Martin Chambers is still the Pretenders drummer last I heard. Perhaps you meant bassist Pete Farndon?
@@RCAvhstape , sorry, emotion got the better of me at the moment... yep I absolutely meant Farndon. Chambers is on Twitter, lovely guy. Thx for catching that *kicking self*
@@maire454 no prob. Love the Pretenders still, grew up with a huge crush on Chrissie.
Makes me want to get a Telecaster......... just because!
I was at this concert in the front row. Good times. I do remember one song when Chrissie forgot the words and Pete had to prompt her. I think she was drunk.
OH!! How I Definitely Remember the Hotel Sterling back in the Day as well as the Entire Cleveland scene! Prospect Avenue and Euclid!! From the Square to E. 18th on Prospect was the Drag Queen Hookers, then from E. 18th traveling East to 55th, Prostitute Lane that circled onto Euclid Avenue until E.40th. WOW!!
Drag queens were always de rigeur for really good anarchistic fun! I won't say no more...
HBD, Chrissie!
No word of a lie, he attempted to make a move on me at an Adam and the Ants after party (Pretenders were playing following night and we luckily had backstage passes, Bronco Bowl) my brother a guitar player said sis that’s Martin Chambers let’s go say hello. We walked over, intros made, I said we are really looking forward to your show tomorrow. “Oh dahling, will you be there?” Said “Wouldn’t miss it” put his arm around me and said “promise to take care of me, luv” at which point I died bc here was the drummer of a band my bro and I idolized and the dude is hitting on me in front of my bro...at which point, after awkward pause, my bro said, “Dude, this is my sister...” as in please not in front of me...it was hilarious!!! Fucking kick ass band to this day...
Fantastic Pretenders
Martin Chambers is KILLER!!!
This “makes me wanna...”!
Holy GOD
I agree...a hair-blowback moment in live Rock & Roll for sure...
USA+GB= great rock'n roll!!
My hero
just ... bad ass
Yup...
Wow!!!!!!!!
Is this Capitol Theatre in Sydney? If so, I was at her feet. She sweat on me! I asked her for the pick she dropped at the end of the show, but she said she didn't have time! That show was insane. Then again, it may be another Capitol Theatre show.
I LIKE !
i don't know who the pretenders, main lead guitarist is, but he was incredible. on all of the pretenders songs, a master of the guitar. i don't think he got very much publicity, but his brilliant guitar playing was the best part of all of the pretenders songs, as far as i'm concerned. kind of like elliot easton, the lead guitarist for the Cars. he was fantastic, but didn't get the publicity that okasik, and orr got.
That would be James Honeyman Scott - revered by guitarists and rock afficionados of all stripes. Not just his playing, but his arrangements and breadth of style and sound. He was a huge influence on Jonny Marr (and countless others), who'd warm up playing the solo on Kid. All superb players, the whole band was legendary, and one of those few with no removable parts, perfectly meshing.
I grew up in this era and these lead guitarist were incredibly gifted. Their work was epic. Elliot Easton, James Honeyman Scott and Berton Averre. Just to sit back and pick apart what they were playing within the context of the songs makes me shake my head. Thank god I had the pleasure to see these bands live in the early eighties when ticket prices were eight to ten dollars for general admission ticket. My girls still wear my old concert tour tees from this time and all I can do is laugh.
Because your so.. ❤️
Original line up.
You know, before
All the heroin casualties 🥺😓
coz She's Precious
ESSA PORRA É ROCK
Barney Miller: Me too! I guess we'll have to digitize the LP (EP!) somehow. ..
Anyone know where I can get a file of this song from the Central Park 1980 show? It was the b-side of the "Message Of Love" EP.
it's a good satirical and critical song not just of Cleveland Ghettoization but all over america...."trapped in a world they never made" at the end
What Capitol theater was it. Cardiff?
capitol theater, Passaic N.J.
Johnny Moped Rules
Capitol theatre Sydney.

Funny ... three hards don't like this ?
Probably all the same guy across three devices.
