Trying to keep balances between his broken family. Losing himself to keep the others safe in their ignorance. Even being willing to die to keep his brother happy. And what does he gain from that? What does he get in the end? His parents telling him that he's innadequate. A failure. That sherlock is the mature one. That everything he did was wrong
Yes! Someone says it. Sherlock was able to forget the trauma of his past and block it out, but Mycroft didn't have that blessing. He had to deal with Eurus and the consequences of her actions knowing full well that he was the only left that truly knew the depth of her insanity.
His parents had that reaction because they were hurt and angry by him faking his sister's dead and putting her in isolation from the rest of world and , especially, them (that made her condition even worse). And also him doing so because he favoured the well being of his other sibling over the other. Imagine being believed you lost your child, that they're dead, then turns out your other child was just hiding the fact that their sibling is still alive and, not only that, that your other child imprisoned them all this years, far away from you. How would you feel? How would you react?
Love this so much. People don't realize how much Sherlock owes Mycroft. It is Mycroft supporting and protecting him that allows him to do what he does. Without him he would be dead, in jail, or worst of all have to have a real job. Mycroft is not perfect but he does his best and does it for the greater good.
People forget that Sherlock wasn't the only one traumatized by the past. Mycroft was too and his mind wouldn't allow him to block it out. Sherlock owes Mycroft big time and to an extent so does John. After all Mycroft was trying to goad his brother into killing him so that he could have his happily ever after with John and Rosie.
All of what you are saying is true. But Mycroft did let eurus and moriaty play with Sherlock coz he wanted them to open up or solve things. That was his fault.. but his mother saying Sherlock is the grown up is so wrong on every level. Still, the brothers are for each other’s back when Sherlock said he did his best and mycroft always being thr to get him out. We really need a season five so that we can see how these two move forward. Coz a lot of blood is on their hands because of what eurus did. And mycroft unknowingly became a cause for sherlock’s pain and exile. Also, we need to see Sherlock supporting his brother and expressing gratitude.. so a season five is needed badly.

If Eurus didn't have super manipulation powers and the people working at Sherrinford actually did their jobs the Final Problem would never have happened. He gave them 5 minutes to talk unsupervised and that's it. Sherlock and John also convinced Mycroft to take them there. Right into a danger zone.

I love Mycroft! He really does try his best to be a good big brother, sadly it's incredibly difficult. I've got six younger siblings and one older sister that I often had to take care for too. I can't imagine how difficult having a younger brother like Sherlock had to be, especially growing up with an even more difficult sister like Eurus... And with all the stuff that happened... I know it's fictional of course, but it still makes me feel very lucky to have such close ties and good bonds with my siblings!

That scene where Sherlock ripped apart his list then Mycroft picked it up and put it in some sort of journal that have things about Sherlock inside my heart just went "HSHAVSHABAJ" and my mouth suddenly went "I love you Mycroft" That scene happens after Sherlock tells Mycroft to get him a pardon like a good big brother if anyone is curious. :))
When Sherlock kills Magnussen and the scene switches to Mycroft saying "Oh Sherlock, what have you done?" we get to see through Mycroft's eyes, and what do we see? A little kid being aimed by guns, crying his heart out and raising his arms in fear. Mycroft never saw him grow up, for him, Sherlock will always be that foolish little boy he needs to look after because who else will? Indeed, he'll be the mother.
i like mycroft because he's relatable for older siblings who do so much for others but never get appreciated. older siblings who behave and try their very best but are still not the favourite child. older siblings who despite constantly constantly arguing with their younger siblings would still do almost anything to look after them. older siblings who were never taught how to love/care by their parents so have difficulty expressing find feelings towards their younger siblings.
I love Mycroft too, and I don't think it really dawned on me until I saw this video just how much Mycroft really does care about Sherlock and works hard to protect him. That very first scene in the garage, where we first meet Mycroft, and he tells Dr. Watson that he worries about Sherlock constantly, was totally accurate and describes their relationship perfectly. Mycroft has probably saved Sherlock more times than Watson has and from far worse dangers, than anyone knows. I would like to know if there could be any salvation for Mycroft like there was for Sherlock (having John Watson as his best friend) and if we could ever see that story told.
Mycroft is an amazing character and a somewhat typical oldest sibling (I have 4 younger siblings). He is willing to do anything and everything to keep his family and especially his brother safe. The scene where he says “o Sherlock what have you done” really shows how much he cares, even when he doesn't show it. As an older sibling I know that I would do anything to protect my siblings, I would go as far as insulting them so that they shoot me rather than their friend. In conclusion: Mycroft Holmes is an underrated character.
Eurus formed Mycroft, Mycroft formed Sherlock. All of Mycroft's emotions seem reserved for only family. Eurus is locked up and can't cause trouble, parents... well ordinary (how lucky for them) and Sherlock...? Frequently some sort of bind and needing supervision or entertaining. Outside of that Mycroft is settled in who he is...efficient intelligence, logical. He never stopped to consider himself lonely until Sherlock pointed it out. Sherlock is simply 'un'lucky that he is more emotional than Mycroft. Otherwise he would have been Mycroft's mini-me.
As I'm older, with a younger sibling on my own, I'm starting to appreciate Mycroft more and more. Like Sherlock is fine, but Mycroft, the poor older brother, who has to take care for his younger brother or he would kill himself out of boredom, has to see him at his worst and still pretend he doesn't care as much as he cares in reality and only gets rejection and anger in return. Not that my sibling is as bad but you get the point. I just wish he would have someone to take care of him for once (because I consider Anthea taking care of him just because it's her job and that's different).
I said that Mycroft was my favorite sociopath to my mom, and she told me that sociopaths aren't something to idolize/ look up to, but just look at this man! He'd go to almost any lengths to protect an ungrateful brother, he all but runs the British government, and he cares deeply in his own, subtle way. I'd personally say that's quite admirable. I know it's all fictional, but man. Mycroft is a good guy.
He's actually not a sociopath. If I had to describe him he's more like an ultra focused person with PTSD and ASD. Contrary to popular belief people with autism actually have high levels of empathy and sympathy. Sometimes way more than your average person. In Mycroft's case after Eurus' murder of Trevor and the aftermath he closed him off because he believed emotions would destroy him.
