- Hello bird fans,
Today we have part 3 of my biting playlist where we look at solutions and preventative measures to help with parrot biting issues.
Of all the problems parrot owners face, biting is often the most difficult and it's the one we get the most consultations on.
It's really important to not go into circular reasoning when looking at biting, so please do watch the entire series and think analytically when dealing with the issue.
As usual, any comments or questions, feel free!

The best thing Sophie taught me was, when my bird misbehaved, to train my bird as if I had just gotten him, like it was day one. As a rookie cockatiel owner, I made some early mistakes, but that reassured me so much and it has worked so well. These videos of yours will only make our interactions better! Thank you :)
❤️👍
Adding to the bite protocol:
If the bird does not let go,
gently turn/twist your hand to loosen the grip. If it's on your hand while biting, go over the nearest and safest, soft surface to do it. If it's on a surface already, just be sure to not do it on the edge where it could fall and make the whole experience worse. Do NOT hold their beak and pry it off if you can avoid it. I heard that advice and it worked for some time but eventually just made the grip harder. My GCC is phenomenal now but those first couple months were rough lessons for me.
Totally agree on the not prising advice! People also often tell others to beak pinch it always makes things worse!
Yes! Film yourself with your bird! I’ve seen myself do things I didn’t realize I was doing. And when I changed my approach, it was as if someone had cast magic on my bird.
It is so useful and helps us analyze and adapt!
Mango went from absolutely hard-biting the target stick to touching it only with his tongue. Simultaneously the biting during other moments became a lot less. Silly me, I had been reinforcing his biting, because I was just happy he understood touching (biting) the stick. Luckily cockatiels are so smart and able to change what they learned so quickly :)
Easily done by so many people!
Love your videos! do you have a video for target training when your bird is afraid of hands (to give treats - just get bitten) dealing with a rescue who was abused and hates hands so giving treats is .....almost impossible.
Protected contact (through the bars) and using a longer target stick!
Also reinforcing more approximations. Start small or using a treat bowl so hands aren’t involved and you can move away!
Great information! Reading the body language is important to avoid being bitten.
Thanks for sharing important information!
Thanks for watching!
Your videos have been a great help, so thank you! How do you feel about gloves when bite training 🤔
We don’t use them, the problem with gloves is they can just become an aversive or be scary!
I have heard of some trainers using them well though!
I noticed the videos on your RUclips channel are very nice but need to optimize in some places. Then your video will be on the top and the subscriber will increase. You should do keyword research and organic video SEO
If only it were that easy!
@@TheParrotTeacher I have emailed the important file for your youtube channel video SEO please check thanks
I was wondering what treats I could use for target training that my bird may eat, I have tried multiple things are he isn’t interested in anything, we haven’t had him long and he is a bad biter with hands he bites out of no where it seems when he gets bored or we stop petting him so I would love to start target training and would love some treat recommendations!
@@Vicious78 try sunflower seeds
Try sunflower seeds
@@randomee6493 thank you! I have bought everything I can and he wants nothing to do with anything lol I want something to reinforce positive behavior and I feel bad when he does something right he won’t take a treat.
Millet is our bird's favorite treat. Here is one of David's prior videos that might help. ruclips.net/video/vBtRLJqh_LQ/видео.htmlsi=xbwztmcVmBPRFLoa
I’d look at his diet in general!
If he’s eating nothing but seeds or sugary pellets he may not have much motivation!
For conures sunflower, safflower and hemp are usually high up. You could also try pine nuts and small bits of fresh fruit!
The video linked is a good one to watch!
Hi! Thank you for your videos! It helped us with our cockatiel a lot :) But I was wondering if these tips would work on a parrotlet? We can’t find much info on him, but he is veerrryy nippy and it always ends up hurting 🥲
It’s the same principles regardless of the species of parrot!
