Happy Birthday Sue Sara! Sue is an old friend and a longtime subscriber who lives in England and gets a special cover on her birthday.
"Listen to the Music" by The Doobie Brothers off of their "Toulouse Street" album which came out in 1972 and featured Tiran Porter on bass.
I'm playing the Spector Euro through a SansAmp Para-Driver. Видеоклипы

Tiran porters aunt was a friend of my mother and I met him at 16yrs old. He inspired me to play bass guitar. Still playing at 71yrs✌️
Very cool! He's awesome!
Tiran Porter is one of my favorite (underrated) bassists. Great Job Troy!
I hear you! Thanks Craig!
@@TJH3113 Jeff Skunk Baxter said Tiran was an amazing bass player. That's good enough for me.
Brilliant - a very underrated bass player Tiran Porter (?)
Big Truth!
Nothing like watching one of his videos only to realize you've been playing it wrong for 20 years. :)
Haha... I'm sure no one noticed.
Great song that brings back a lot of memories. Tiran Porter was a huge influence when I was learning to play bass back in the 70s. The way his bass lines floated through the song while holding down the beat were, and still are, mesmerizing to me. "Long Train Running" was one of the first songs I learned how to play all the way through. Thanks for another great cover!
Very glad to hear that, Steve. I think that you described Tiran's playing perfectly. On the surface, his lines may come across as being simplistic, but he plays with the rhythm and uses implied/ghost notes quite a bit. Thanks so much.
Beautifully done, Troy. The bass line really propels this song, and as is so often the case after listening to you play, what I thought was a fairly straightforward part is actually more complex and nuanced than I realized. Your gift for hearing the details and then accurately bringing them forward for all of us to see and hear helps me learn. You also inspire me to be a better player. You make a difference, and I know I’m not alone in that sentiment.
Thanks Jim! Thanks so much for the very kind words.
Your comment really resonated with me…because I feel the same way! I’ve grown so much as a musician from watching/listening to these videos. 🎶
Ah I've never noticed that little run starting at 1:23, very nice !
Yes!
Happy Birthday Sue. I hope your day is magical. Cheers
Thanks for stopping by, Tommy!
not only do i love the bass playing but i am CRAZY about the wall of masks in the background!!!! very very cool i'v always wanted a wall like that in my house. i just dont have enough masks!!!
Thanks! Most of the masks are from DeathStudios.
My godfather played this song in his 65 year old bday, in gratitude for getting cured of stomach cancer. His son, his brother and I gathered around for taking each one a part in the song. I played a headless tambourine, sung backing vocals and Pat Simmons' vocals. That felt so heartwarming!
That’s very cool. Thanks for sharing such a great story. I hope your Godfather continues to be well.
Yep, Troy. Almost 1 year free from the C-word! I felt comfortable to share here this story bcs I read once your own story on C-word. He just got too thin for his clothes and shoes, but he's doing quite fine 😊
Nice post Troy.
I recall using this song as an example to show a friend how a good bass line can both support, and add motion to a song.
Thanks Brad.
Yeah, this song is a perfect example of what you described!
Honestly I've never really paid attention to the bass on this song. Perhaps since I've heard the song so many times? Anyway, I really like it...bounces right along! Excellent cover Troy!
Not only Troy's playing- but that sweet Wal ( I think) bass! Look at that color!
@@oreally8605 its a Spector.
Glad you liked it! Thank you.
Yes, Lance is correct, it is a Spector Pulse. Thanks.
I just left a comment about the same thing. Seems like it's buried in the mix?
What a great song. Used to open a lot of our gigs with this one back in the late '90s. Best of the Doobies - a PERFECT ALBUM.
It is, isn't it? It makes a great opening song! What's not to like?
Proof once more, Bass carries a song!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
It's amazing to me how the bass lines in some songs seem buried in the mix so much so that to hear them highlighted just sounds weird. Awesome as usual!
I’m very glad you found some value in this video. Thank you very much!
I love how you keep going after the song ends. It really helps when your trying to learn a song.
I did this video a while back and it was probably one of the earliest examples of when I continued playing after the music ended.
Always loved Tiran Porter's bass playing. Thanks for doing this song awesome justice Troy
Yeah, he was a fine player and had a unique sound and style. Thanks Mike!
Happy Candle Day Sue Sara Across The Pond! Been a Doobies Follower since High School from last Century! LOLOL I remember being a huge Steely Dan Fan and then hearing that BOTH Jeff "The Skunk" Baxter and back up singer Michael McDonald had left the Dan of Steel and joined up with The Doobies Brothers! At the time I was ticked about it and felt that Loyalty was a lost cause. Of course as I matured I realized that Artists change and so do Bands and Groups and Artists too. So many Classic Doobie Tunes out there. This one surely helped to get them noticed by the Fans! Loved your style of playing this Troy! What a lovely gift for a Loyal Friend! Cheers From Ohio
Thanks for taking the time to leave such a great comment!
Yet another awesome performance, Troy... I really enjoy being turned on to these great old tunes with such wonderful bass lines. Well done!
Many thanks Forrest!!
Love this song Troy! What a wednesday delight, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love this song oooooo listen to music all the time..........
Awesome!
Just now seeing this. Awesome job and I’ve always loved playing this but I see some extra notes in this video that I missed. It’s a great song and it’s really driven by the bass. Thanks for posting.
Awesome! I hope it helps. Thanks and take care.
Thank you for your amazing bass covers. I have been a fan for a while but just subscribed now. Thanks for the music.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Take care!
Awesome Sir , Regards from Fiji 🇫🇯 😀
Thank you and regards from New Windsor, NY!
I love singing along with this song....wish it could fade forever, thank you
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Thanks, you saved me a lot of time to get Ready for a audition tonight 👍
Glad I could help!
With your AH Leah cover, I noticed you're phenomenal left hand position , it blew me away. That's excellent pickup listening. That's awesome copying to a T. Those fingers are perfectly placed. Thanks keep playing.
Wow, thank you so much Vernon!
Good job. I love your vids because I now hear how important and intricate the bass line of the song is ! I can now appreciate what I missed years ago when I first heard this song.
Thank you very much!
Nice bass! Thanks for the video!
Thank you. Any time!
Great song! Great sound too!
Thanks a lot!
It's one of those songs that most ears can't tell how much the Bass line is actually driving the groove along. But sure as heck notice if it's missing. ☺️ 👍
Truth!
Yet another song I played live (at the same show as Living On A Prayer and Hold On)! Great cover and a fun bassline!
Very cool! Thanks!
A while back I had my high school chorus sing this for our spring concert
I imagine that it must have sounded wonderful!
G'day Troy, thank you for all your videos. Your dexterity and feel for the groove is inspirational. Having fronted a Country Music band, singing and playing guitars, for the past 35+ years I am now in a band as a non singing bass player and your videos help me rediscover myself. Cheers from Australia. Michael
Hello Michael and I'm glad you appreciate the videos, the songs were my pleasure to learn and record. Welcome to the fold! I hope you enjoy your time playing bass as much as I do!
Great! I love this song, Doobie Brothers is a amazing band!
Thanks Andre! I've seen a lot of concerts and The Doobie Brothers have always been consistently good.
Thanks for adding this one. I've looked for it before and couldn't find a cover that was worth watching. Brings back memories too.
It was my pleasure. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.
Perfect performance! I live that! 👏👏👏👏 You are my teacher for all international music's then I'm playing !!! Thank you so much !!!!
My pleasure!
I knew from the first few notes that this was going to be an interesting base line.
I'm glad you liked it.
Aaah good memories listening to my Mom's 8 track lol. I never noticed how this has a country feel to it hmmm.
Haha... I never understood the value of 8 Tracks.
@@TJH3113 At that time it was the only way to listen to music in the car besides the radio.
@@EnergyAndLightAwakening Is that why they were created? I knew people who had 8 tracks in their home stereo systems as well.
Troy is a great, great bass player
And you are too kind. Thank you Ben.
Always loved how Tiran added to a tune…plus, he was one cool looking dude to boot. Thanks for adding some Doobies to your cover catalog Troy.
Totally agree! It was my pleasure. Take care, Mike!
Totally love this song 🎵 awesome much fun to play definitely 👍 flawlessly done. Amazing sound.
Glad to hear that! And thanks!!!
Great playin’ thx
Thanks!
been learning this song recently, so this is a really helpful one! thanks as always and happy birthday Sue!
Very cool. I hope it helps!
Thanks again for bringing the spotlight to baselines that are often not brought to the forefront. Sometimes we just hear the song as a whole and recognize it for being catchy/groovy etc…then we watch you perform it and say to ourselves, “Damn, that is one cool bass line”.
It was my pleasure. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment
Man that Song Brings me Back ty for the great cover
Very cool. Thanks!
For years I played this in D because our singer didn’t have M Macdonald’s range and thought I had it right! Still learning from you in my 60’s Troy!
Whatever you've got to do to keep the singer happy! Aw, thanks Bill, that's great to hear.
Well done.
Thank you.
This is a very good bass cover i like the doobie brothers since 2017
Thank you!
Thank you so much Troy! Great tune and awesome performance. And Happy Birthday and best wishes from Munich to you, Sue Sarah!
It was my pleasure. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment, Jens.
Beautiful job! You play so well. Tiran Porter is an awesome bass player and one of my top 2 favorite bass players and you nailed it! Thanks so much
Wow, thank you! Totally agree that Tiran is an incredible bassist!
Great job! I’ve always loved that song!
Thanks Rick! Me too!
amazing! Tiran Porter would surely be proud, in my opinion one of the most underrated bass players, he has quite a few very good bass lines. I hope you can do more of the Doobie Brothers :)
Thanks! Do you think? I'm sure I'll get around to doing something else by them at some point.
Mi canción favorita de los Doobie. ¡Saludos, maestro!
¡Impresionante! Me alegra que te guste.
Absolutely OUTSTANDING!!!!! Thanks for another GREAT lesson dude...
Glad you liked it!
Nice job as always Troy! Such a pleasure listening to you groove!
Thank you very much Rob!
Wow,
What a great cover of this song. Thank you for doing
Thanks so much Frank!
I loved Porter's BC Rich Mockingbird bass. I almost bought one back in the day when they came out. Neck through, awesome shape. Great tone. Worth a small fortune today on the original ones. Great cover, my friend! I need to learn this one.
Definitely! I remember it well. It had a nice, dry sound to it. Thanks a lot John!
Thanks Troy, great job! Love this song! This was the final song on their first farewell tour when I saw them
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I've seen them probably more than any other band (mostly because they've opened for so many groups) and they've never disappointed.
great job
Thank you!
Nice work as always!! I like when you continue playing after the recordings have stopped and we are left with just listening to bass alone!
Thank you, Rich!
Wow now that takes me back. Excellent playing and song choice Troy. Spot on man.
Thanks so much!
Great song, great cover!
Thanks Alexander!
👍show👏 beatful bass parabens como sempre arrebentou
Obrigado!
Excelente ejecución, muchas felicidades 👏
¡Muchos gracias!
that’s terrific, brother; well played, as always 👍🏻
Thank you, Patrick
Like sitting in at a Magic Circle meeting, I feel I'm not supposed to know all this. Mainly thanks to great tonal balance.
Haha... Thanks Phil!
That bass sounds amazing 🤘!
I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome playing , as always Troy ! Beautiful bass by the way ! Loved the color and tone .
Thankyou Troy! Another year gone! Really appreciate your birthday pressie! Another good cover!
Thank you kindly Gustavo!
Loved it Troy. One of my favourite songs ever. You nailed the tone too. Very well done mate! Lots of love from Aus!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for Colin Hay!
that's good news about your mother. I didn't know we were so close in age. Glad all is well with youguys. i know the cats are always having a ball like children. I want to send your mother a house plant. let me know if it is OK. Thanks. Marvine Hi Lynn! :-)
I did not know you were that close in age either. I don't really keep track of those things, but Lynn does. I'm sure my Mother would love a plant. Should I leave her address in a comment?
Great song and awesome performance as always 👍
Thank you very much Igor!
Nice Job!
Thanks!
As usual, great cover. Always liked to play along with this song. Unfortunately haven't touched my bass for months, but I feel like playing now, thanks! I'll get on with it again, see what cool licks I can steal from you :)
Thanks Bauke! Awesome! I hope you did pick it up!
I've loved this song for so long, but I get the bass confused with "Long Train Running" for no good reason.
Clearly I should've been paying more attention. What a finely-melded piece of work. Matches the song entirely.
An excellent cover! Thank you! I always like seeing Sue's choices, she always picks bops.
Fair enough! Thanks!
Great song and great to hear the bassline up front. Dig the crazy "just put a flanger on everything" production in the mid eight - going up against Itchycoo Park for the most flangingness. Thanks Troy!
It is and I'm glad you liked it! I'm not familiar with "Itchycoo Park", I'll have to check that out.
@@TJH3113 It's a bit of typical sixties flowery shirt pop, but it was significant in its pronounced use of flanging - and as it happens it was the Small Faces only major US hit.
Many thanks Troy means a lot x
Any time
Mannnnn she sounds so sweet
Thanks
EXCELLENT SONG CHIEF,
I LOVE THIS SONG
Great to hear! I hope you liked it.
NICE BASS I LIKE
I do too
Troy: you should be in a band really. Any group who got you as the bassist would be over the moon and Blessed.
Yeah, Troy IS a great addition to the right band. I'm lucky enough to have had the pleasure of his elusive company, lol.
I wouldn't wish that on any band, but thanks!
Aw, too kind Dave! And I, yours.
Good video dude, im a fellow bassist so this is very inspiring🙂
Thanks so much, I'm glad to hear that!
nice...
Thanks...
awesome as always!!!! could you maybe look into samantha sang's "but if she moves you"? it would be so fun to watch you play!! hope you have a good day
Thank you Audrey. I'll check it out!
Nice
Thank you, Ana
Such a blessing to hear these incredible bass lines done so well.i notice you don't do the 5 string bass thing.Been debating it but ehhh!
Thanks Jonathan, I’m glad you liked it. I actually have one five string. It’s a Musicman, though I don’t play it too much.
Today is my birthday too, hoping for some iron maiden ahah . I’m just joking. Great cover as usual, hugs from italy
I hope you had a great birthday, Mario! Thanks and take care!
Have always loved this Troy and you play it prefectl. How are you? Lynn. Mom and cats? Marvine :-)
Thank you Marvine. I am good. Took a couple of days off and painted the deck rail spindles today. Boy is my back hurting. Mom is ok. It went well when we took her out for Mother's day and Lynn wants to do something small for her 80th birthday at a local restaurant. Mom is agreeable to it, so it should be nice. The cats are good, for the most part. There's always something somewhere with them.
Nice job? Yea Man, that one sounds good. Full and round in the upper midrange. They all sound good...its all subjective, play on!
Thanks!
Hey man I’ve been watching you for the better part of a decade and always admired your playing. I’m not sure if you take requests but it would be killer if you played “If You Want Me To Stay” by Sly and the Family Stone. One of the greatest bass lines ever written
Thanks for your support. I'd never heard the song before, but checked it out and I like it, so it's a possibility. Thanks for the suggestion.
Would anyone here love to see Troy take on Too Shy by Kajagoogoo? Seems like that would be a very fun project for him, even though it is not the traditional sense of classic rock ...
I actually started messing with that one a while back, but there are some tuning issues. Maybe I'll get back to it at some point.
I just have a question for you and then a comment on midnight confessions by the grassroots you said you think he's playing that part but you weren't sure do you read music or do you play by ear? Now a comment, you are smooth you are precise and you are my favorite bass player outside of Getty Lee of Rush I really enjoy watching your videos thank you for being accessible for me I do appreciate it
I play by ear and memory and, as much as I've learned to trust my ear, that one part just didn't make sense. Thanks so much for the very kind compliment. I really do appreciate it. Take care, Tony!
I love this soooong !!!..please check elvis - burning love live 👌🏼🇨🇱❤️
Awesome! I will try to check it out. Haven't had the time yet.
💞
Thanks Cindy!
Great bassline! Love his stuff. Nice work as always, Troy. What's that Spector weigh?
It is, isn't it? Thanks. Not sure of the weight, but probably between 8-9 pounds. It's not terrible heavy for being swamp ash. Probably due to Spector bodies being fairly small.
Killer...
Thanks...
I like this song and this Bass line 😊 Great Troy! However, I was wondering about your basses!
How many basses do you have with active pre-amps? What Do you think Are the advantages compared to the oned with passive? Vice versa😊 A long question! I’m curious to hear your opinion, since I only have basses with passive pre-amps
Thanks Julius, I'm glad you liked it. I have 7 Spectors and they are all active (but we should really consider that whole group as one bass). I have a Fender Precision/Jazz that I added a Spector clone preamp to, so we could really classify that bass as a Spector. My MusicMan 5 string is active. And the Fodera is active. The Wal bass, which I no longer have, was active. You could say that 4 of my 30+ basses are active, which is around 12%. I'd say that I much prefer passive basses. I find active electronics a bit of a pain to fuss with, though the Spectors are very reliant on their preamp to get their sound. I really like the idea of just plugging a bass in start playing.
Thanks man! Have you done sister disco by The Who?
Never mind I found it you did it about four years ago headed there now.
Glad you found it!
Hi TJ, what type of Spector is that you're playing? I am looking for something lighter then my old stingray and P basses due to lower back issues.. I was looking at the Euro Bolt as it has a fatter neck profile. Your bass looks to have the same type of profile.
This was a Euro... neck-through. The neck was standard Spector dimensions from what I remember.
Thanks for replying, sorry for the late response. Keep up the good work with the videos. @@TJH3113
