- Hello :)
This is the requested transcription I did of The Doobie Brothers song "Listen to the Music" from their 1972 album "Toulouse Street". The bass player on this track was Tiran Porter.
This transcription can be found at www.muzento.com under Intermediate - Learning Songs subject.
Tune Down 10 Cents
This is a feel good song and I've always liked Tiran Porter's bass lines, so I was more than happy to do this one. I was a little surprised at how difficult it is to keep that rhythm so consistent like he does. It sounds like a nice easy going feel, but by the end of the song, my heart rate was definitely up! It takes some stamina to get through this one.
I was also surprised at the note length. Until I started playing along with it, I never realized how short the notes were in the chorus were before. I think it's important to play them short, otherwise it looses the "snap" and could start to drag...and we don't want that! :)
It's fun to play along with, I hope you enjoy it :)
Don't forget to like and subscribe and thanks for watching :)

Always loved that little fill at 1:28. Tiran Porter very underrated. Another classic cover !
Hey Gary, I like that lick too. Variations of it have been used in so many songs...and there's so many ways to play it. Thanks!
Great video. One of my favorite bands. I like seeing the written notes in action and your fingers corresponding to them. I never knew how complicated bass is until I started watching this young gal : Ellen plays Bass on You Tube. She is quite the prodigy.
Killer playing and transcription, Greg. You’re such a joy to follow, and your work is impeccable. Love it! An inspiration! Thank you!
Wow, thank you very much :)
Another solid spot-on one Greg. How can ya not love this Tiran Porter bass line, picked no less.
Plus an all time best inner album cover, lots of staring at it while listening as a young lad.
Cool...I can remember those days too. Not with this album, but with others for sure...miss that.
I keep being surprised at how many songs were recorded with a pick. Thanks!
This is one of my favorite go-to fun songs to practice. The rhythm is everything and you absolutely nailed it!
Hey Bob, you're right, The rhythm is everything! Have fun with it :)
Love it! We both play it the same way. Took me almost 2 weeks to learn to play this song. It was a big deal for me.
It's not an easy song. Good job :)
I suggested this 3 years ago to our band and they laughed at me. Now another member suggested we play it and here I am.
Cool...have fun with it :)
❤Brill! Da Doobies Rok! Ha! Thanks Greg. 💫
My pleasure...thank you Deb :)
Nice! Nice patterns I didn't notice before. Tiran Porter did sneaky and subtle Bass playing that was valuable to the songs. Playful Bass....
He's a very nice bass player. Playful bass. I like that :)
EXCELLENT!!!! Thank you. Learned a lot from this. Very focused Bass patterns.
Hey Terry, thanks man. I'm glad you found it helpful. Definitely, it's not a "jammy" type bass line. Focused, like you said ;)
Great song by a great band. Thank you for sharing your wonderful work.
My pleasure, thank you! :)
Awesome music! I love the Doobie Brothers. 🙂
Hey Jason! I'm glad you like it...thanks!
Joyous! Song for me. Happy Friday!
Happy Friday Mimi...have fun with it ;)
Right on Greg! Beautiful work🎉. I know what I’ll be ing this weekend 😊

Nailed it. Perfection.

Wow! Thank you for posting
My pleasure...thank you :)
Good stuff Greg, I've heard lots of bass covers but practicing from the transcription is what I really enjoy. Thanks! Cheers from Utah
Cheers! Thank you and have fun :)
Masterclass.
Thanks :)
hi greg, I knew it because I played it with my old band, thanks for this reminder with a nice bass line.
Cool, glad you like it Abdel.
Love it Greg. Great choice. Well done
Thanks Steve!
Great looking Bass
Thanks :)
Superb job
Thank you :)
Awesome. I love it, but just starting out with bass, so will probably be a while until I can manage it. I would love to see a cover with the transcription/tabs of Rock Your Baby by George McCrea, but I'm not sure if it's challenging or cool enough for anyone to bother with.
Hi Susan, I like that you're giving yourself time to learn ;) I'll have a listen to that song...thanks!
awesome!! what kind of strings would you recommemnd when it comes to classic rock sound? thanks!!
I've always used round wound strings. I used Roto Sound for a long time, but then switched to D'Addario. I hope that helps...thanks! :)
@@BassCovers yea same here with the RotoSounds! I started to back with GHS BOOMERS again but i will give D'Addario a try Thanks!!
Perfect timing though I didn't like the sound, I hear the bass better when playing with the fingers, not plastic nails
well...it's a good thing there are different opinions and tastes. Otherwise life would be pretty dull ;)
this song in the bass are btf
what is btf? :)
