Not exactly, the communists were doing horrible before they were forced to retreat so some forces in Yunnan. They just let the nationalists fight the Japanese with all their might and then the soviets also gave them help Manchuria which turned the tide. The Second United front in my opinion wasn’t as good for the nationalists as it was for the communists. There is a pretty decent chance we would have seen a western like republic of China. The warlords also were one of the factors that made the Chinese nationalists agree to the United front. So yeah it was more like the smart kid did all the work and then the popular kid took credit.

From the Yellow River Cantata by Xing Xinghai. The work was temporarily banned during the Cultural Revolution due to its Western influences and traditional material recalling old customs and culture. During this period, the work was rewritten by multiple composers into the Yellow River Piano Concerto, with 'Defend the Yellow River' being the fourth movement. The end of the Cultural Revolution resulted in the new piano concerto to lose its fame, although in recent times, both the concerto and the original cantata have seen popularity.

During the cold war, this song was banned in Taiwan for being too communist and then banned in the mainland for being too western.
