  • Leica 42.5 1.2 Nocticron vs Lumix 42.5 1.7
    Which lens is best, and which is right for you?
    One of the best parts of working in a Micro 4/3's camera format is that there are an abundance of lenses to choose from in a variety of prices points. Two of my favorite lenses at the Leica 42.5 1.2 and the Lumix 42.5 1.7, but for entirely different reasons.
    On the surface these two lenses look entirely different, but in terms of clarity they are very much the same. To see how they are different you have to dive a little deeper than what is obvious. When I want to be traveling light I definitely turn to the Lumix 42.5 1.7, and when I need that extra stop of light, or to be a little more precise as pointed out by one of my viewers 3/4 of a stop, I turn to the Leica 42.5 1.2.
    There is also a difference in the look of the Bokeh with each of these lenses, and although it's all about personal preference, the Leica is my favorite of the two in that regard. Which ever you choose, I have no doubt you will love the results as both are incredibly sharp.
    If budget is no object, I would turn to the Leica for professional product or people work as a photographer or a filmmaker. However, if I am a street or travel photographer I'd probably go with the Lumix version.
    Hope this helps bring some clarity to the differences and likeness of these to amazing lenses.
    Cheers... Charles

    I am surprised that you didn’t mention close focus which I use all the time with portraiture. The 1.7 focuses dramatically closer than the Nocticron. That alone makes it my preference.

    The Panny 42.5mm 1.7 is a PHENOMENAL lens. I've gotten some of the most amazing portraits with it: pocketable, stabilized, sharp, and with solid bokeh... what more do you want?? The fact you can buy one used for under two hundred bucks blows my mind. Yes, the Nocticron is fantastic, but even its biggest fans would not call it a great VALUE. If you're always shooting in pitch blackness, then maybe the Nocticron is for you. For most everyone else, the Panny 42.5mm is a GEM.

    Only difference I can spot is the colors. On the 1.2 the skin tones tend to lean more towards magenta whereas on the 1.7 they tend to be a little green. But that isn't a big at all. Great video. Enjoyed it much.

    DXO did a test on the Leica 42.5mm f1.2 and they say the light transmission is 1.7 TStop. They don't have the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7 tested, but they do have the Olympus 45mm 1.8 and the transmission is 2 TStop. Is it right to conclude that the stops of light advantage are not 1 stop but 1/3 stop, at least between the Leica and the Olympus?

    thank you. the 42,5mm reminds me of the canon classic 50mm 1.8 version. do you think it brings similar image quality (except of the IS of course)? my other question is that if the focus ring on this lense works in the same direction as the canon ones or in reverse (like tamron does)?

    • @artistcharlesmaring
      @artistcharlesmaring  6 лет назад

      Canon makes some beautiful L glass, with smooth focus pulls... Definitely similar, but more closely related to the 85mm 1.2 from Canon in terms of image. I'd say both are on par with Canon on sharpness and image quality. Sold all my Canon lenses, and had two of just about everything under 300mm and moved into native M43 lenses as I felt the quality very similar. The size / weight benefits of native M43 was compelling.

    Nice review.Actually achieving enough sharpness at 1.2 is hard technological task.I owned many old lenses with 1.2 opening and must say full open their sharpness is unacceptable for anything except "dreamy photos" with crazy low Depth of field.Leica can do great images at 1.2 .Because of it its so expensive & big.Nobody else except Voigtlander for MFT can do it,but last one is manual lens.

    Question - I have used the 4k photo feature of my GX85, but I do have a concern that maybe you can heck me with. It is a little difficult going through the camera to select stills to save a jpg files due to the small size. I there any software editing program that will let me load the clip onto a computer and see the images in a larger size and THEN pick what I want but still get the same size jpg (I think 4 megapixels) once "extracted?"

    • @artistcharlesmaring
      @artistcharlesmaring  5 лет назад

      Great question... Basically 4K photo mode is taking video clips and saving them to the camera, which would allow you to export an 8mp still photo. You can import into any video editing software to do this. You could also just shoot video instead of using the 4K photo function and do the same thing. Here is a video on how to do this using FCPX. I have bought the lumix 42.5 1.7 and the manual meike 35mm 1.4 (only 100€)
    For videos I use the lumix because it is automatic and has OIS.
    For photography and low light the Meike. It's metal body and full manual settings (aperture and focus), and also the boquet is fantastic. There is a small chromatic aberration and reds tends to be magenta, but it is easy fixed in post.
    For people who are in budget, I advice to research this lent for portrait, results are amazingly professional

    when sensors started to look good at ISO 6400 and got 5 F-stops of stabilization I decided that anything about f1.8 max aperture was
    all I wanted to carry. I got decent OOF and still could get shots in focus.
    F 1.2 is so shallow DOF that often I would miss acceptable focus.
    Comparing these lenses, the F1.2 has egg shaped Bokeh Balls, not what
    I want.

      zenjitsuman Smaller and lighter has its advantages for sure. In some cases less is more.

    It's mind blowing to me that the Nocticron is not weather sealed, that's a huge fail

    If the leica did not exist you would not know any difference so I the 1.7 is the one for me. I found a like new used for $280.

    you state the difference between f1.2 and f1.7 is 1 stop, but this is not true. It is 3/4 of a stop, maybe you was rounding but you did then say its the difference between doubling the iso, which again is not the case. Its like shooting at 6400 or 11,200 not 6400 and 12800. I think its important to state the actual difference in light given the price difference.

      Thanks for chiming in and being precise Alan... Yes there is a subtle difference making the 1.7 just a little bit more enticing.

      anyways tx for the comparison, just trying to convince myself the f1.2 is worth the extra. How did you find it focusing in low light? reliable?

    • @artistcharlesmaring
      @artistcharlesmaring  6 лет назад

      Yes the focusing is very comparable... Nice thing about Lumix is that the focus assist lamp is in the camera body instead of the flash. Moving over to Lumix from being a Nikon and then Canon shooter, that little feature is a huge help for me personally in low light as I photograph a lot of weddings with off camera strobes. My DSLRs would hunt non-stop a weddings photographing the first dance, etc... when the lights got low. Now it's a breeze to work this way. The real difference in the lenses is build quality. A couple of things I didn't mention was that the Leica has a manual aperture ring option which is kind of nice once in a while, and it has the ability to turn off AF on the lens as well so it's an easy switch to Manual focus. But, of course that can be done with ease on the camera body as well. I don't think you'll be disappointed either way you go. The Leica is a very special once in a lifetime kind of lens albeit expensive, but I love how lightweight the 1.7 is! Tough call because they both make great points.
