the fact that humanity was gifted with the ability to create something as beautiful as this is absolutely mind boggling. there's something so inherently calming and serene about this piece. the way the voices blend and harmonize with each other makes me want to cry tears of pure enlightenment.
Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Hildegard von Bingen three of the most angelic and pure souls to have lived And how grateful am I that they had the ability to write their music and pass it down to us and beyond I hope
I learned his work as a 12 year old choir boy. It was hard work. The Anglican Church can be quite demanding. But I now celebrate his work as a 72 year old. You can seek Tallis, but then allow Tallis to find you. It's an interesting journey. DWD
Last year, I joined my school's choir with not a lot of interest in singing this kind of music. However, through every day of practice, I've slowly become more and more appreciative of singing this song with my peers. I have to say, the atmosphere in the classroom was heavenly.
I wish there were documentary’s on the life and music of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd two incredible composers who’s music should be more recognized and played more.
Try David Starkey's "Music and Monarchy". There is a very detailed section on Tallis and how the religious whims of the monarch affected his musical style through the years.

@Patricia Yeiser Specifically an English composer. In the 16th Century the British state did not exist. In any case, the Church of England has always created its own genre of music and is always described as English, not British.
I have sung and conducted many pieces composed by Tallis. They are beautiful and this is a lovely recording. These pieces certainly are not forgotten. I have taught them to many a choral group during my lifetime.
Most "here" listening to this on RUclips certainly know what culture is. Some do not, however... do not forsake hope that some who DID not this "culture" before, shall KNOW after experiencing this offering. :-)
Not only a very beautyful song, created by an outstanding composer, but also an excellent performance of this ensemble. Rutter is an excellent conductor as well.
I love sacred music and this choir! Whether it's the Cambridge Singers or BYU singers or the Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square or Voces8, they are all beautiful and bring a reverence and sacredness to the pieces they sing!
Je l'ai apprise, tellement elle est belle cette pièce. Ma voix m'a quitté pour toujours, je ne pourrai jamais la chanter. Il ne me reste que le plaisir de fredonner la voix de ténor.
Ralph Ashmore I learned it just for the pleasure to enjoy it. I never sang it in a choir, and I will never do. My voice is gone forever, but I enjoy it by singing softly the tenor part.
Hey, thank you very much for sharing this! If ye love me really showcases the incredible skill of Tallis and his command of polyphony. I’ve just posted a multitrack recording of Tallis’ seven-voice two-part motet Suscipe quaeso Domine - Si enim iniquitates, and I’d love it if you could have a listen! I think it is one of his finest works 😊
Churches should never let go of the Catholic tradition, this is simply and example of one beautiful piece rendered by professionals.....I love me some tallis
There's something timeless about this piece. Even though it was written in 1565, it sounds like it doesn't belong to any time period. It almost sounds like something Eric Whitacre would compose today, not someone in the late-1500's. Truly a work of art, in my opinion. Why didn't I find this sooner?
I think all the truly great ideas and artistic creations are timeless. Christianity, to me, is about man's attempt to capture that sense of timelessness (which is the sense of eternal life, ie, living in eternity rather than time) through his moral actions and artistic creation in liturgy, architecture, music, art etc.

Tallis...Perfection. Why some churches have ceased singing the traditional hymns is baffling.
LOL a lot of churches simply don't have the singing talent for polyphony! Let's be honest.
