I saw them in 1973. They had 3 drummers, amazed me as I watched them play in sync on specific melodies. They were positioned with 2 drummers on stage floor, center dummer up higher. Arm movements were exactly the same. Beating in unison. Twirling sticks in the same groove. WOW! I was mesmerized and blew my mind. That was the original Doobie Brothers. Surprisingly they continued having 3 drummers over the years. Love them before Michael M. and as much with him. 2 different sounds, both GREAT!!

You have just begun to realize the greatness of this Band from the early 70s to the late 80s . One of the Best Bands that could crossover from Rock to R&B to Country Rock to Blues. Here are a few of their best songs. "Listen to The Music," (their first
hit in "72") "Long Train Running" "Black Water," China Grove," and many more.

The guy with the mustache you're referring to is Jeff skunk Baxter! He played on the first couple of Steely Dan albums with Denny Dias also playing lead. He quit the Dan and then joined the Doobie Brothers. Most people would need twenty lifetimes to get into one band as good as Steely Dan, skunk Baxter was so good ,that he got into a second band The Doobie Brothers!!! That man can play!!!

    • @jml-rj5re
      @jml-rj5re Год назад +1

The guy in the back with the mustache is Patrick Simmons. Skunk is front left with the sunglasses. Former guitarist for Steely Dan. MM was in Steely Dan, so after Skunk left Steely Dan to join the Doobie Brothers, when Tom Johnston became ill, Skunk recruited Michale McDonald to joint the Doobies.

This group went thru a couple lineup changes, both good. This is the later, straight pop end of things; "Long Train Runnin'", "Jesus is Just Alright With Me" and "Takin It to the Streets" (among others) from early to mid 70s is more funk-rock end.

I think when Tom Johnston left the Doobies the band was in some disarray. McDonald wasn't a full timer having toured doing backing vocals and piano. They were plinking around in the studio. Someone asked Mike if he had any music. It seems like he started singing and playing Takin It To The Streets and they were blown away by the tune and Mike's lead vocal abilities. They knew they had something going.

Friday night my husband and I went out to a club in Asbury Park because they were having a "DROP IT LIKE IT'S YACHT" night; it was amazing, and of course the DJ played this song and "I keep forgetting". Beforehand, we were wondering ok, how are we going to "DANCE" dance to our beloved Yacht Rock (we used to go clubbing a lot when we were dating 30 years ago, but not to this genre, lol) and it worked! The DJ was mixing beats with each song and it worked out perfectly; an epic night, the whole place was dancing AND singing every song!!!

I've loved this song since it was first released in 1979, the year I started high school (yeah, I'm old! 😭). IMO, Michael McDonald is on the short list of greatest male vocalists in the last 60-70 years (or more) because of his unique, smooth and soulful tone and his fantastic control, range and phrasing. He's also an incredible songwriter (as evidenced by this song). His first solo album in 1982, "If That's What It Takes", is an absolutely killer album, with no "filler" songs (It contains the hit I Keep Forgettin'). The songwriting is consistently great throughout the album and the musicians were the cream of the crop session players (including...Steve Gadd-drums, Jeff Porcaro-drums, Steve Lukather-guitar, Louis Johnson-bass, Greg Phillinganes-keyboards, Tom Scott-sax and his buddies Kenny Loggins and Christopher Cross on backing vocals). I would play the full album on RUclips when you've got the time to sit back, relax and listen (probably never, right?!)

His voice and talent was so outstanding that Gary Katz (SD Producer) as well as Don and Walt said to him that he was "too good to remain as a back up singer" and to venture out on his to find his own success and went to the Doobies. Michael has said he was already in the BEST band in the world, but that move changed music and the Doobies.

Great reaction to a great classic. And yes, it should be on any all time greatest list imo. What the song is about though, is really kind of a tragic story. I always envisioned it as a man and a woman running into each other somewhere, who had a brief history at some point years back. The woman barely remembers the guy, whereas the guy always thought they would end up together and that their brief affair meant something more than it did. He tries to get things going and she basically shuts him down but he refuses to see it. "as he rises to her apology, anybody else would surely know. He's watching her go...What a fool believes."

"They should have named this song Eargasm!" I couldn't agree more. Just transcendent. One of those Best Song Ever-s, every time I hear it.

I wore this album out!! This song stands the test of time! I would love for you to react to their greatest hits album. Like, each song in order.

It's all a matter of personal taste.....There are a number of bands who I just love for some period of their existence and then am ambivalent about them at best for their "other eras." The Doobies are one of these bands. There is no denying Michael McDonald's vocal talents. They have also added some top notch musicians over the years. I just prefer their earlier lineup. Probably the most extreme case of this for me is with Chicago, a band whose first two albums are two of the greatest ever but turned into a sappy ballad churning machine.

Normally I want to see people's 1st reactions to songs. This song though, I will watch every time no matter whether it is their first time hearing it or not. As a 50-year-old this is exactly what you described it as. Nostalgia. Love it guys.

Two members of The Doobies played on a few different Stealy Dan albums. Guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, and Keyboard and vocalist Michael McDonald, from this video.
    Thank guys

In the movie Romancing The Stone, Michael Douglas’ character had fled the country to South America running from the law. When he meets Kathleen Turner’s character, she has an American newspaper. It’s his first chance in years to see what’s happened at home so he tears through it silently scanning all the headlines. Then he yells “SONOFABITCH, The Doobie Brothers broke up!?!?”

I had the pleasure of seeing him when he was back in St. Louis in 2004 at Riverport. Michael along with Average White Band, and Hall and Oates
