Even if I really enjoy the Pears singing, the biggest pleasure here is the Britten playing. He does exactly what I'm looking for in this song, not making too much of it.
Bravo!
Our music teacher, Mrs Barnes (nee Doran) got us to sing this in a music festival in Accrington many moons ago. It was in English but the love of Schubert's lieder has stayed with me. I know the piano part's not virtuoso standard but Mrs Barnes really made her accompaniment shine! She got us singing The Trout after that and then threw us in at the deep end with Haydn's Creation. Not bad for year 9's!
Extraordinaria version. Extraordinaire!!!!!
Great performance! Interestingly, this piece was unpublished during Schubert's lifetime, and was first known by the great Liszt transcription for solo piano, which Liszt made from the manuscript
No offence, but if it were, you’d have called it Die Schöne Müllerin! Fritz Wunderlich’s heavenly version is, to my knowledge, considered the definitive version. Have you heard it? Do, if not. It will floor you. I swear that even tho he lived a tragically short life, he was the greatest lyric tenor the world has ever known. There is a DVD on his life, including much film, commentary by other singers & on another side, private interviews. All v moving & gorgeous. Like Fritz.
as my friend who sent this link to me put it: please watch this and imagine what virtuosically awkward sex they must have had. thank you very much for the post! love, a huge Britten and skeptical Pears fan
Thank you for posting this! Would appreciate anyone that can to post "Die Stadt" and "Die Taubenpost" from Schwanengesang from a Pears/Britten Decca recording.
Pears had a pretty solid technique - indeed, he worked very hard on perfecting it during his early years. The proof is evident in the fact that he enjoyed such a long career, maintaining for a large part of it a remarkable consistency of range and tone. His timbre might not have been to everyone's taste, but his dedication and artistry were beyond question.
yeah, Pears maybe not the best at singing German songs, but when it comes to the English language he brought a kind of brilliance to it that not many others manage.
@Benway242 This rendition has real charm. It's not fair to compare anyone to Wunderlich. Wunderlich, in my humble opinion, was simply the greatest tenor on record.
I´m afraid - with appearing of Fritz Wunderlich all other tenors and their singing moved one step down in value. Though I like to watch and listen to other tenors as historical figures, it sometimes hurts to listen to music that is so far away from the perfection, which was in all respects given by Fritz
Please stop mentioning Fischer-Dieskau.. his approach is quite different and there's hardly any point in comparing. This is an interesting performance, but 99 times out of 100 a good German singer is going to turn in a more authoritative performance of German lieder than his English coutnerpart..
As much as I love Britten, I still have my reservations about Pears' voice. It's certainly distinctive, but at its worst it can sound unpleasantly pinched and insubstantial. Its interesting to listen to him sing something NOT written by Britten for a change, as he is here.
I AM German. And it is a very difficult language with a complicated pronunciation. And he does a great job. His ch- and r-sounds are remarkable considering German is not his mother tongue.
Eine sehr gute Verständlichkeit. Klar und deutlich! Sehr gut gesungen!
Perfectly conceived and delivered in all artistic considerations as they always perform when together
Even if I really enjoy the Pears singing, the biggest pleasure here is the Britten playing. He does exactly what I'm looking for in this song, not making too much of it.
How we love them. Has made my day!
Excellent!!! Both pianist and singer!!!
What a delight!

Perfektes Deutsch, u. gut gesungen !

Bravo!!🌹
One of the best recordings (the best????). Listen to the new Pregardien-version with michael Gees.
DIVINE!!!!
Great performance! Interestingly, this piece was unpublished during Schubert's lifetime, and was first known by the great Liszt transcription for solo piano, which Liszt made from the manuscript
Extraordinary
niice interpretation for a "not-german" ;-))
really nice especially the articulation
Lovely performance, if a little fast for me.
For me too! I am surprised at Britten’s pace. Surely, it was his decision.
Charming!
For many, this is the definitive Miller's Daughter.

@Damon Raphael Fritz Wunderlich’s version: ruclips.net/video/RLVFj-KOeJc/видео.html
Britten was a masterly accompanist, as PEAinSwe indicates.
yesssss
as my friend who sent this link to me put it:

thank you very much for the post!

lolz his hands!! :D
Yes, that's right. It's almost flawlessly pronounced and articulated and very pleasing (much better even than in the great Decca-Winterreise).
Thank you for posting this! Would appreciate anyone that can to post "Die Stadt" and "Die Taubenpost" from Schwanengesang from a Pears/Britten Decca recording.
Same here, although Pears is usually much more reserved in terms of performance appearance than he is here.
Is there a film of Pears singing the whole cycle?
I can't find a complete recording of Pears singing Die Shoene Muellerin - does anyone know if any such recording was made.
Lee Simmons There is a recording of the full cycle through Heritage records. Great recording.

piano performance here memorable.

ich bin ein dovid. and i don bloody get this german. (eve though i said 'ich bin ein')
watchaa gonna doooooooo!!!!!
respect to singer - but nothing against Fritz Wunderlich version of this
greetings
What on earth is doing with his hands? Is he holding something? The words, perhaps...?
@Benway242

Mr. Bean on piano?...

i wish he wouldn't fiddle
The already garbagewoman?!?! Perhaps Die schöne Mühlerin? Müll means garbage. Mühl means mill.
Mühle means mill. And there’s no such thing as a “garbagewoman”. But there’s the scavenger. And it’s not Mühlerin but Müllerin.
I´m afraid - with appearing of Fritz Wunderlich all other tenors and their singing moved one step down in value.

I hear something like a nasal voice, this is lack or technique
Funny...but no good. What the hell the is he holding his hands like that
I don't like his "R"
gays
Not the best performance rather bland.
hmmm his german is quite bad, there is no sense in his words
I AM German. And it is a very difficult language with a complicated pronunciation. And he does a great job. His ch- and r-sounds are remarkable considering German is not his mother tongue.
