2:113:095:437:037:53 Thank you so much for this practice! I’m a beginner so I only did in 1st position and didnt pay much attention to intonation (so I basicly did it just like a physical exercise) but it helped me TREMENDOUSLY! Normally (on A string) I cant even reach my pinky to E if my 2nd finger is on C but if I do this exercise before practice I can even reach F! Thanks very much🙏🏻💙
@@SophieCViolin I had to stop practicing bc I had De quervain's tenosynovitis in my left hand (due to constant squeezing with my thumb) 😢 I’m waiting for it to heal😔 do you have any vids about left hand relaxation? I would like to watch it as well:)
@@Borka642 I’m so sorry to hear!! Hope you feel better soon :(. I also struggle with squeezing my left hand too much. Something I find helpful is to shake your hand out whenever it feels tense, or to press so lightly your fingers barely touch the fingerboard. I’ll try to make a video sometime about it, since it is so important!
Hi Sophie great to get this exercise, thank you! I am am adult student. I have just purchased a 7/8 size violin after hearing that traditionally ladies played the very slightly smaller sized violin (because they were said to have smaller hands... well I certainly have, maybe even slightly smaller hands than yours ). It has made a big difference to my playing advanced pieces. My hand, wrist and arm- twist were always under big pressure previously. G Ire
I'm really happy to have discovered your channel! This kind of exercises are very useful and effective! I suggest an interesting variation: keep the finger down on the upper string and then move back with the other finger on the lower string until you get the octave ( or tenth). Greetings from Italy!
Thank you so much Sophie, your tips are great, I am self taught , can you do a string crossing slur , in a bunch of notes in one bow in a small hand. It is really a killer, it is always not clean , uneven because I can't stretch , I really appreciate if you can help out
Hello! I am so glad you find my videos helpful. As for a string crossing slur (I believe you are referring to bariolage bowing?) , I recommend practicing open string first and the left hand separately. Left hand try to practice it reduced in chords, not thinking of it one note at a time. The string crossings are best practiced open string first. Then, try slowly combining the two. I hope this can help!!
Hi Sophie, I really like your finger stretching for warming up. I included in my practice sessions! :) one question: how much is the hand allowed to move/support the fingers reach the notes? Greetings :)
Hi! So glad you found this exercise helpful! I would say to do your best not to move the hand (during this exercise only) to allow the fingers to reach the notes. The reason is because we are just trying to stretch the fingers here, and we are in no hurry to reach the notes. Take your time, and stretch little by little. Happy practicing! :)
@@SophieCViolin wait I’m sorry but I’m learning the abcs and I’m kinda confused with putting your fingers on the like tops to change it to like an e string I play the viola and I started playing like 2 months ago.
@@mayasarah1292 No worries, especially since you have just started, give it some time. Playing a new instrument will take some getting used to, and I would not worry too much about this exercise yet since that is the case. practicing daily is the key at the start, slowly and carefully :). let me know if you have more questions! happy practicing!
haha i don't have an exact measurement, but trust me they're smaller than the average size! however, this exercise works great for any hand size and will improve flexibility and mobility :)
Any tips on playing on the g string? I'm having trouble reaching G comfortably. I have tried moving my elbow more Infront of me and this does help to a degree but still feels very stiff
hello! I totally get it-- the G string octave is the hardest one since you have to somewhat stretch your pinky to reach the notes. Truthfully, strengthening your pinky by isolating it with stretching and finger lifting exercises is the most effective way to be able to reach the G string octave comfortably. it takes time, but I promise they build up! here is another video that has exercises that will help: ruclips.net/video/rBwyKfrp8yQ/видео.html
Hmmm.. I would say make sure your hand isn't tense and your fingers aren't pressing into the fingerboard. Your thumb also shouldn't be squeezing, and make sure you release when you do vibrato. I'll try to make a video on vibrato someday!
I've been struggling greatly with the first finger becoming too sharp and moving forward whenever i do exercises involving the fourth finger. The fourth finger causes the first finger to move forward, slide and become sharper. I've tried everything and don't know what to do, can anyone help ?
ah, I see! that happens to me too, don't worry. if it is moving forward, it might mean the fourth finger is not ready to be stretched that far yet. stretch it as far as it goes without the first finger moving forward and be patient from there :). you've got this!
Soo...I started violin cuz I can't reach an octave on piano. Little did I know, one has to play tenths on violin and I can't reach that. Should I quit both cuz my hands are too small or just not play any repertoire with a tenth
hi! I'd say to keep going with violin if you like it-- you never know how much more flexible your hands could get. and, like you mentioned, there is plenty of repertoire without tenths until you for your way up. however, there is no right decision. I wish you all the best!
@@dodavega ohhh I see. Octaves are the interval that means 8 notes apart. 10ths are the interval that means 10 notes apart. For example, an open G and a G on the D string are an octave apart. I hope this explanation helped a bit more? Also, if you're new to violin, you don't need to worry about stretching your fingers or these intervals too much yet! Just keep working on the fundamentals and you'll get there eventually. :)
Actually she is wrong. Moving the thumb upwards creates more tension. Move the thumb under and backwards. This will open up your hand for a bigger reach. So amateur!
hello, I am sharing what I do for the purposes of the exercise (which is to stretch). I agree that moving the thumb backwards helps open up in actual playing. if this tip doesn't help for you, then please feel free to leave it out!
